A conspiracy of silence in the presidential campaign?

Ron Ecker

According to the respected writer Ron Rosenbaum, the LA Times is sitting on a juicy sex scandal involving one of the presidential candidates. (Shades of the unidentified "royal" in another thread!) Rosenbaum has been told that everyone in the DC mainstream media knows about it. But the Times doesn't know what to do with it.

My guess is it's Hillary. There is fear involved here. It's the Clinton crime family's turn to have the White House in the Bush/Clinton presidential rotation. Seriously damaging Hillary's candidacy could therefore have dire consequences for the damagers, upsetting the powers that be.

Who else among the candidates could the LA Times and others be so afraid of?

The locked up story has to be about Hillary, because a story about Rudy running around on his 3rd or 4th wife wouldn't be much of a story, unless, of course, it was with Sen. Larry Craig or Rep. Mark Foley.

Plus, if it was a hot story about a Republican, the LAT wouldn't be sitting on it.

Rudy is quoted as follows in the current Newsweek: "I took a city that was known for pornography and licked it to a large extent."

Who cares who has affairs.....such prudish English-speaking stuff...

I'm more interested in who leaked it and why.

I think you've answered your own question. It's all part of the old Roman circus that you've alluded to before. It's distraction for the masses, who do care insatiably about who's having affairs, much more than about who's robbing them and their children blind.

Oh, yes the old ‘liberal biased media’ myth. Perhaps IF Rosenbaum’s 2nd or 3rd had hearsay (his source doesn’t work at the LAT) is true they are sitting on it because it can’t be verified. Craig was arrested, Rudy did dump his wife while she had cancer to hook up with a young aide, Foley did send suggestive e-mails to a 16-year-old former page. You don’t think the “liberal” media would sit on stories detrimental to Republicans election time? What about the NYT sitting on the illegal wiretap story till after the 2004 election? What about Republicans admitting to lying about Democratic candidates? That went virtually unreported. The media did exactly sit on the Monica story.

Len-

You are kidding, aren't you?

Good, I thought so.

It's kind of ironic that there may be a sex story which could make Hillary or Rudy look badly to voters.

If the media simply reported the truth about them with some regularity, it would certainly trump some sexual peccadillo.

They are so similar that they should be running mates.

Nope I'm not kidding. Your comment about Rudy was ambiguous but you said "if it was a hot story about a Republican, the LAT wouldn't be sitting on it" how else could that be interpreted other than 'the media (or at least the LA Times) favors the Democrats to the extent they would cover up a story that would hurt thier chances of winning the White House'. This is a common right wing myth and indeed obvious GOP supporters make the same supposition on Rosenbaum's page i.e. that the LAT is only sitting on the story becauses it concerns a leading Democrat probablly Hillary or Obama.

EDIT - typo fixed

I know you weren't kidding, I was kidding you by asking. No offense intended.

What was the mag that WJC is going to be on the December cover, but which he threatened to pull his authorization to publish the interview unless it spiked a pretty good story on Hillary?

I think that it is GQ, but I will try to follow up on the story and provide a link sometime this week.

I suspect that facts behind the LAT story and the spiked mag story are one in the same.

I think that it involves Hillary, which would likely favor the Democrats if it derailed her coronation.

If anyone believes strongly to the contrary that it involves a Republican, I will be happy to oblige them with a wager.

I don't think or care about anyone's sexuality (and certainly not Rudy's or Hillary's), but it is a sad state of public discourse that a sexual excapade is far more potentially damning to a candidate than taking contradictory or coy positions on important issues.

I agree.

A good many reporters simply dig for dirt on public figures for a living, kind of like political strategists and advisors.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that certain media outlets have disparaging stories on some politicians "in the can" and ready to roll out at an optimal time.

It will be interesting to see what stories magically appear after the Demo. and Repub. national conventions next year.
