Golf in Tenerife

Tenerife is now an excellent location for holiday golf with nine good 18 hole courses to choose from

Amarilla Golf

Amarilla is a pleasing Donald Steel designed 18 hole course on the coast offering good value for money and outstanding coastal views. The course is measured 5918 metres from the back tees and offers a challenge to all levels of golfer with a challenging par of 71. There is a strong finish to the course with the uphill long 16th par 5 at 500 metres demanding an extremely precise drive as a rocky waste area encroaches on the left all the way up the fairway. Similarly the same waste area will catch a slightly errant drive on the 17th page 4, and the par 3 18th requires a precise crisp iron with danger lurking short and left. It is likely that these finishing holes have wrecked many a promising card and I would advise you to play them conservatively.

Prior to my visit to Amarilla Golf I had been advised that the course was not in the best condition. This I found to be untrue. The greens were receptive and putted well and the fairways and bunkers very well maintained. Whilst there had clearly been some problems with drainage on the 17th green the rest of the course was immaculate. The complex also offers a pitch and putt par 27 course a small driving range and the opportunity to book reasonably priced lessons from two young professionals. Service was excellent throughout the complex and I strongly recommend travelling golfers to visit Amarilla.

Golf del Sur

Golf Del Sur offers 27 holes recently redesigned by Ryder Cup legend Manuel Pinero.

The course is a delight to play; the condition is good and the views excellent. However my recent visit was slightly spoilt by two things. Firstly the proximity of the airport is such that you do feel as though the jets are going to land on you on the second tee, and secondly and more importantly the management of numbers on the course is not good. Over 200 people were put out on the day I played which at over £100 a round must be very rewarding for the management of this complex is not very satisfying for their customers. The golf was extremely slow … to such an extent that quite a few people were not able to finish their round due to darkness. It was also disappointing to note that courtesy rounds were not extended to visiting professionals only a small reduction in green fee.

That said it is a pleasant course which offers competitive green fee rates fro complex residents and visitors and is a challenging undulating golfing experience. My advice to visitors would be to book an early tee time and also avail yourself of a buggy. On a hot day it is a gruelling walk.

Las Americas

Right next to the resort of the same name Las Americas is a real treat and has been rightly nominated as one of the very best golf courses in the whole of Spain. It is a John Jacobs design and opened in 1998. It is in a beautiful environment and is maintained to a high level. The course is measured at 6039 metres from the back and though is mainly flat (a great deal flatter than the other course mentioned in this guide), intelligently placed hazards and water features make the par of 72 a real challenge (I managed 78 and thought I had played quite well!).

One of the most pleasing features of Las Americas is the high level of service the complex prides itself on. Little touches such as the free chilled water being distributed on the course by staff make you feel as though you are in a classy establishment where your needs are paramount rather than somewhere where chasing the Euro is King.

Such is the design of Las Americas that the journey between greens and tees is not long and buggies should not be necessary to complete this course.

I strongly recommend you play Las Americas on your visit and also make a day of it by booking a meal in their excellent restaurant.
