Carleton S. Coon

Recommended Posts

Carleton S. Coon, Harvard anthropologist recruited into OSS, was assigned to North Africa under Col. William Eddy, and worked with British MI6 in training of free French resistence fighters in Morocco.

Commander Ian Fleming, on one of his first assignements with British Naval Intelligence, parachuted into France as it was being overrun by the Germans, with orders to convince Franch Admiral Darlan to take his fleet to England. Instead, Darlan went with the Vichy pro-Nazi collaborators with his fleet to Casablanca.

British and American forces, led by the US Rangers, had to fight the French in order to capture the French fleet at Casablanca, an invasion that Richard Carr referes to in his New Orleans testimony.

When Darlan was murdered by a free French gunman, it was assumed by many that the British were behind the assassination, but it appears that Carelton S. Coon played a major role.

While John Bevilaqua said that Coon was involved with the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler, of which I have so far found no evidence, Coon was most definately involved in the Darlin asssassination, and other intrigues. (Thanks to JB for calling attention to Coon).

From: An Army at Dawn, by Rick Atkinson. (Page 276):

Among the most active outposts were five camps run by the Special Operations Executive, a British organization established in 1940 to nurture indigenous resistance groups, with help from the Amiercan OSS. Intended to bolster Anderson's First Army and Fredendall's II Corps, each camp was commanded b a British officer who supervised recruits drawn from Vichy concentration camps and other seedbeds of disaffection. Collectively they were known as the "Bad-Eyes Brigade," for the unusual number of brigands in bifocals.

The senior American in the operation, Carleton S. Coon, was a corpulent Harvard anthropologist who had run guns to pre-TORCH Morocco and invented "detonating mule turds," artistically sculpted plastic explosives that were liberally scattered on Tunisian roads to flatten German tires. Fluent in Arabic and French, Coon had taught the fine art of blowing things up to French irregulars in Ain Taya until one of his pupils, Bonnier de la Chapelle, showed extracurricular initiatve by shooting Admiral Darlan; although Coon had no discernible role in the assassinatgion, he was given leave to disappear until Algiers cooled down. Thus he appeared at the SOE's northermost post on remote Cap Serrat, forty miles west of Bizerte, under the nom de guerre Captain Retinitis and dressed in a British Army uniform with phony officer's pips cut from the green felt of a billiard's table. "Now," a fellow observed, "the company of rogues and cutthroats is complete."

Leading a band of fifty desperadoes, Coon blew up a railroad bridge, harassed the local Italian garrision, and scattered mule turds by the bushel. His freebooters soon specialised in seizing hostages, usually the sons of elders in villages of doubtful loyality. The boys were imprisoned in the Cap Serrat lighthouse until their fathers provided authenticated information about enemy positions. "This use of hostages was our chief source of intelligence aside from the work of our own patrols," Coon reported. Less sucessful were booby traps, which according to the professor's accounting claimed only two casulties: "one Arab and one cow."

From: Cloak & Gown By Robin W. Winks (Page 183):

However, on the morning of December 24, 1942, just as he left a meeting with Robert Murphy, Admiral Darlan as assassinated at the Palais d'Ete by Fernand bonnier de la Chapelle, an intense young Frenchman who was a member of the Corps Franc d'Afrique a Giraudist military unit being trained at Ain-Taya, west of Algiers. While originally instruction at the Crops Franc camp was provided by the British SOE, they had withdrawn their men and had left the program in the hands of Carleton S. Coon, an OSS agent sent to Ain-Taya by Colonel Eddy. 14. Coon, then professor of anthropology from Harvard, took a tough view of war: if policy required that someone be assassinated, he favored it, and at the end of the war he wrote to Donovan that "some power, some third class of individuals aside from the leaders and the scholars must exist, and this third class must have the task of thwarting mistakes" – that is, must identify the potential danger of a Hitler and his immediate disciples early and kill them. Unhappily, not only could Bonnier be traced to Coon, but Coon was near the Palais d'Ete when the assassination occurred. It was then discovered that Coon had owned a Colt Woodsman pistol, the type of gun used by Bonnier. 15.

Though certain that Coon was not involved, Eddy ordered him to leave Algiers at once, to hunker down with an SOE outfit near Constantine, on the Tunisian front. However, the French felt justice had been done when Bonnier was court-martialed immediately and executed by firing squad early on December 26. Whatever rumors about OSS involvement may have circulated, they were weakened by Giraud's quick action. Soon afterward Bonnier's sentence was posthumousl annulled, his partner in the conspiracy was released from prison and given the Croix de Guerre, and everyone admitted that they were to see Darlan removed from the scene. Thought there is no real evidence to implicate Coon in the assassination, he was, in any event, also included in the rapid character rehabilitation applied to the now safely dead assassin and his coconspirators......

Carlton S. Coon Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carleton_S._Coon

Carleton Coon was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He developed an interest in prehistory, and attended Phillips Academy, Andover where he studied hieroglyphics and became proficient in ancient Greek. Coon transfered to Harvard, where he studied Egyptology with George Reisner. He was attracted to the relatively new field of anthropology by Earnest Hooton and he graduated magna cum laude in 1925. He became the Curator of Ethnology at the University Museum of Philadelphia.[1] Coon continued with coursework at Harvard. He conducted fieldwork in the Rif area of Morocco in 1925, which was politically unsettled after a rebellion of the local populace against the Spanish. He earned his Ph.D. in 1928[2] and returned to Harvard as a lecturer and later a professor. Coon's interest was in attempting to use Darwin's theory of natural selection to explain the differing physical characteristics of races. Coon studied Albanians from 1929-1930; he traveled to Ethiopia in 1933; and in Arabia, North Africa and the Balkans, he worked on sites from 1925 to 1939, where he discovered a Neanderthal in 1939. Coon rewrote William Z. Ripley's 1899 The Races of Europe in 1939.

Coon wrote widely for a general audience like his mentor Earnest Hooton. Coon published the novels The Riffians, Flesh of the Wild Ox, Measuring Ethiopia, and A North Africa Story: The Anthropologist as OSS Agent. The North Africa Story was an account of his work in North Africa during World War II, which involved espionage and the smuggling of arms to French resistance groups in German-occupied Morocco under the guise of anthropological fieldwork. During that time, Coon was affiliated with the United States Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency.

Coon left Harvard to take up a position as Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1948, which had an excellent museum. Throughout the 1950s he produced academic papers, as well as many popular books for the general reader, the most notable being The Story of Man (1954).

Coon did photography work for the United States Air Force from 1954-1957. He photographed areas where US planes might be attacked. This led him to travel throughout Korea, Ceylon, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, Sikkim, and the Philippines.

Coon published The Origin of Races in 1962, but it was not well received. The field of anthropology was moving rapidly from theories of racial typing to other trends. Coon continued to write and defend his work. He died on June 3, 1981, in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Clendenin James Ryan was best known as the Publisher and owner of The American Mercury Magazine, published in Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1950s when McCarthyism was at it strongest....

.....Clendenin J. Ryan was deeply committed as a financial backer of numerous adventurous schemes involving foreign intrigue bordering on violating The Neutrality Act, with another infamous spymaster and former OSS Colonel by the name of Ulius L. "Pete" Amoss who ran the Baltimore, MD based International Services of Information, Inc. (ISI) and GramTrade International which was later merged into the Boston Metals Processing Company of Baltimore, identified as a CIA commercial cover proprietary by Robert Maxwell of Iran-Contra fame....

.... Ulius Amoss, once in the OSS, also delved into methods of programming paid assassains to do his bidding overseas and he worked very closely with Major Carleton S. Coon, an Anthropologist, OSS member and an Egyptologist on this project which eventually was merged into the MK/ULTRA operations of James J. Angleton and Ray S. Cline of the CIA. Ulius Amoss' prize programmed assassination pupils include Robert Emmett Johnson and Lee Harvey Oswald among others. If you review the parallels between Major Carleton S. Coon and the character "Indiana Jones" you can only come away convinced that Coon was the prototype and paradigm for the Jones character. Both Coon and Jones in "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", were actively involved with paranormal research sponsored by the OSS and the CIA and investigating UFO crashes, "alien encounters" and similar phenomena while using their "Professor of Anthropology" covers to gain easy entrance and access to foreign territories. Remember the movie, "Minority Report", starring Tom Cruise?

Coon may even have held the best of intentions, but his mindset reminds me of the folks who profess no faith in government or its solutions, but trust it with determining who to mete out capital punishment to, and who to spare.

I am glad I am in my later years, because, if Coon's proposal to "nip them in the bud", was a plausible one, and it clearly isn't in any society I want to be a member of, what I expect is coming as a result of the economic dislocation briefly described below, would make Coon's idea seem the lesser of two evils....

Eastern European Tinderbox: How Explosive Could It Get?

Mary Stokes, Jelena Vukotic and Elisa Parisi-Capone | Feb 28, 2009

The Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region is the sick man of emerging markets. While the global crisis means few, if any, bright spots worldwide, the situation in the CEE area is particularly bleak. ....

....EU’s Free Market Rules Under Pressure: Eastern Disillusionment and Western Protectionism

Overall, a big rise in support for populist and radical parties in the region could put social, structural and environmental reforms on hold in the region and could even call into question the economic and political model Eastern European countries have followed since the 1990s. The eastern EU member states’ decisions to open their markets and move toward greater integration with the EU are now being second-guessed by some. Moreover, the protectionist measures implemented in some western EU states in support of their automotive and financial sectors are threatening the EU’s single market rules and could particularly hurt Eastern European economies. Meanwhile, a backlash over immigrant labor is likely. With the 2009 unemployment rate set to rise to 8.75% in the EU27, according to the European Commission, member states are tempted to interpret the laws in a way more favorable to their nationals. This suggests that migration trends will reverse and the eastward flow of remittances will dwindle. The return of Eastern European migrant workers, in turn, may add to social discontent in their countries of origin....

"Our Tier 1 Ratio Is Strong!"

Yeah, but your balance sheet is full of lies....

....Let me explain how serious this situation in the markets is.

A huge number of big multinational companies - firms that have so far held up reasonably well in the indices (and in fact are all that is holding up the indices) have tremendous unfunded pension obligations on their books.

These firms have in many cases seen half of their net equity value destroyed due to MTM losses on these funds. These liabilities can only be discharged through a bankruptcy (transferring them to the PBGC), and yet that would wipe out their common stockholders.

Now here is your exercise for the weekend:

Take the large-cap companies that have held up "reasonably well" thus far and also are "legacy" firms - that is, firms that have been around for a long time and thus have pension obligations on their books.

Zero the stock price of 30-50% of those.

Now compute what that does to the index they are in.

Make sure you're sitting down when you do this computation....

Bill,

Economic stress seems to me to be the principle catalyst for the rise of "another Hitler".

I had just read the Coon proposal for a "third party" authorized to find and pre-empt emerging Hitler types, when

I next found the piece on the impact of Blue Chip stock corp's pension obligations and their impact on the prices of stocks and the effect the decline will have on major US stock indexes.

This prompted me to check a couple of current stock prices and I saw a comment posted on a yahoo.com stock message board asking if we will soon see the emergence of a new Hitler, and that post contained the link to the description of the economic peril facing the former eastern block countries.

I happen to believe that MIC spending in preparation for WWII, was the major catalyst ending the last depression, and that the economic collapse we are now in the early stages of, will result in authoritarian rule in some major countries as a backlash to unemployment and wealth inequity aggravated by a failed western corporatist political/economic system.

If I am correct, too many of the convictions of Coon and his colleagues will be implemented. I was attempting to support the idea that yes, things are potentially "that bad", or about to be....

By the way....did you read the attempt by someone claiming to be Coon's son, here, in the lower part of the page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Carleton_S._Coon

...titled, "Coon Was not a Racist in the Perjorative Sense"? I found it interesting, but if it is Coon's son, he has an interest in not having a father of such a controversial reputation.....

You know Tom,

I did read that stuff, but am not interested in the anthropological racism or the philosophy of nazis, or the economic threat creating a new Hitler, but rather, very strickly on Coon's role in the OSS during WWII, his advocacy of assassination as a tool of war, his letter to Donovan that reportedly addresses this issue (has anybody read that?), his role in the assassination of Darlan, any connections with Ian Fleming and Eddy, and whether he was in any way associated with James Bond, the American ornithologist from Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences when Coon was a the Philadelphia Museum at UP, a few blocks away.

It seems that most of the interest in Coon is centered around his anthropological ideas, while I am interested in his OSS WWII activities, and not his philosophical racism. He did fight fascists and kill them, so I don't think he was sympathetic to the nazis.

The first priority of a successful coup (according to Lutwak/A Practical Handbook) is to pump up the economy and the masses won't care who runs the country, but if things get really bad, I think people will help each other out rather than revolt.

Our entire society could fall apart and it would still be imporant to discover who killed JFK, and rather than philosophise about it, I think specifically, we are closer now than ever, so why be so easily distracted?

Rambling my ass. Eat your heart out.

Here is the reference to Coon advocating "throwing out the bad apples" to Wild Bill Donovan shortly before the Plot to Kill Hitler.

Both Donovan and a young Allen Dulles took his advice and then set the ball in motion to eradicate Adolph Hitler. You stand

corrected.

Coon published The Origin of Races in 1962, but it was not well received. The field of anthropology was moving rapidly from theories of racial typing to other trends, and some of Coon's critics even regarded his work as racist. Both he and Carleton Putnam produced funded Eugenics related research commissioned by Wickliffe P. Draper, founder of The Pioneer Fund and a sponsor of the American Eugenics Society. Coon continued to write and defend his work. He died on June 3, 1981, in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Here is what OSS officer Carleton S. Coon is quoted saying in a report, code-named "The Invisible Empire," written to "Wild Bill" Donovan near the conclusion of World War II. Carleton S. Coon was a Harvard trained anthropologist who used his anthropology professor cover as an OSS super-spy. Coon and is now considered to be the real-life paradigm and prototype for the character: "Indiana Jones." "Wild Bill" Donovan was the Wall Street spy who founded the Office of Special Services during World War II, America's first foreign intelligence agency. Coon's comments are considered to have provided the marching orders for Allen Dulles, the eventual CIA director, to organize and encourage the assassination attempt on Adolph Hitler known as Operation Valkyrie managed by Klaus Schenck Von Stauffenberg on July 20, 1944 the anniversary of Hitler's conception. Hitler's birthday was on April 20th but he liked to celebrate the date of his actual conception as well which, for a full term 9-month gestation period, would have been on July 20th of the previous year. Later Allen Dulles and Ray Cline became heads of CIA operations attempting to either oust or assassinate leaders of leftist countries in the Western Hemisphere like Jacobo Arbenz of Guatamala, Orlando Letelier of Chile, Fidel Castro of Cuba and Juan Bosch of the Dominican Republic.

(S)ome other power, some third class of individuals aside from the leaders and the scholars must exist, and this thrd class must have the task of thwarting mistakes, and nipping the causes of potential disturbances in the bud. There must a body of men whose task it is to throw out the rotten apples as soon as the first spots of decay appear...

This mandate was taken up by first the OSS and then later by the CIA in an attempt to rid the Western Hemisphere and then later the entire Eastern European Bloc of despots, leaders and elected officials who were sympathetic to the Communist cause.
