Carleton S. Coon

Carleton S. Coon, Harvard anthropologist recruited into OSS, was assigned to North Africa under Col. William Eddy, and worked with British MI6 in training of free French resistence fighters in Morocco.

Commander Ian Fleming, on one of his first assignements with British Naval Intelligence, parachuted into France as it was being overrun by the Germans, with orders to convince Franch Admiral Darlan to take his fleet to England. Instead, Darlan went with the Vichy pro-Nazi collaborators with his fleet to Casablanca.

British and American forces, led by the US Rangers, had to fight the French in order to capture the French fleet at Casablanca, an invasion that Richard Carr referes to in his New Orleans testimony.

When Darlan was murdered by a free French gunman, it was assumed by many that the British were behind the assassination, but it appears that Carelton S. Coon played a major role.

While John Bevilaqua said that Coon was involved with the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler, of which I have so far found no evidence, Coon was most definately involved in the Darlin asssassination, and other intrigues. (Thanks to JB for calling attention to Coon).

He developed an interest in prehistory, and attended Phillips Academy, Andover where he studied hieroglyphics and became proficient in ancient Greek. Coon transfered to Harvard, where he studied Egyptology with George Reisner. He was attracted to the relatively new field of anthropology by Earnest Hooton and he graduated magna cum laude in 1925. The North Africa Story was an account of his work in North Africa during World War II, which involved espionage and the smuggling of arms to French resistance groups in German-occupied Morocco under the guise of anthropological fieldwork. During that time, Coon was affiliated with the United States Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency.

Coon left Harvard to take up a position as Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1948, which had an excellent museum. Throughout the 1950s he produced academic papers, as well as many popular books for the general reader, the most notable being The Story of Man (1954).

Coon did photography work for the United States Air Force from 1954-1957. He photographed areas where US planes might be attacked. This led him to travel throughout Korea, Ceylon, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Taiwan, Nepal, Sikkim, and the Philippines.

Coon published The Origin of Races in 1962, but it was not well received. The field of anthropology was moving rapidly from theories of racial typing to other trends. Coon continued to write and defend his work. He died on June 3, 1981, in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Remember the movie, "Minority Report", starring Tom Cruise?

Coon may even have held the best of intentions, but his mindset reminds me of the folks who profess no faith in government or its solutions, but trust it with determining who to mete out capital punishment to, and who to spare.

I am glad I am in my later years, because, if Coon's proposal to "nip them in the bud", was a plausible one, and it clearly isn't in any society I want to be a member of, what I expect is coming as a result of the economic dislocation briefly described below, would make Coon's idea seem the lesser of two evils....

Yeah, but your balance sheet is full of lies....

....Let me explain how serious this situation in the markets is.

A huge number of big multinational companies - firms that have so far held up reasonably well in the indices (and in fact are all that is holding up the indices) have tremendous unfunded pension obligations on their books.

These firms have in many cases seen half of their net equity value destroyed due to MTM losses on these funds. These liabilities can only be discharged through a bankruptcy (transferring them to the PBGC), and yet that would wipe out their common stockholders.

Now here is your exercise for the weekend:

Take the large-cap companies that have held up "reasonably well" thus far and also are "legacy" firms - that is, firms that have been around for a long time and thus have pension obligations on their books.

Zero the stock price of 30-50% of those.

Now compute what that does to the index they are in.

Make sure you're sitting down when you do this computation....

Economic stress seems to me to be the principle catalyst for the rise of "another Hitler".

I had just read the Coon proposal for a "third party" authorized to find and pre-empt emerging Hitler types, when

I next found the piece on the impact of Blue Chip stock corp's pension obligations and their impact on the prices of stocks and the effect the decline will have on major US stock indexes.

This prompted me to check a couple of current stock prices and I saw a comment posted on a yahoo.com stock message board asking if we will soon see the emergence of a new Hitler, and that post contained the link to the description of the economic peril facing the former eastern block countries.

I happen to believe that MIC spending in preparation for WWII, was the major catalyst ending the last depression, and that the economic collapse we are now in the early stages of, will result in authoritarian rule in some major countries as a backlash to unemployment and wealth inequity aggravated by a failed western corporatist political/economic system.

If I am correct, too many of the convictions of Coon and his colleagues will be implemented. I was attempting to support the idea that yes, things are potentially "that bad", or about to be....

By the way....did you read the attempt by someone claiming to be Coon's son, here, in the lower part of the page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Carleton_S._Coon

...titled, "Coon Was not a Racist in the Perjorative Sense"? I found it interesting, but if it is Coon's son, he has an interest in not having a father of such a controversial reputation.....

I did read that stuff, but am not interested in the anthropological racism or the philosophy of nazis, or the economic threat creating a new Hitler, but rather, very strickly on Coon's role in the OSS during WWII, his advocacy of assassination as a tool of war, his letter to Donovan that reportedly addresses this issue (has anybody read that?), his role in the assassination of Darlan, any connections with Ian Fleming and Eddy, and whether he was in any way associated with James Bond, the American ornithologist from Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences when Coon was a the Philadelphia Museum at UP, a few blocks away.

It seems that most of the interest in Coon is centered around his anthropological ideas, while I am interested in his OSS WWII activities, and not his philosophical racism. He did fight fascists and kill them, so I don't think he was sympathetic to the nazis.

The first priority of a successful coup (according to Lutwak/A Practical Handbook) is to pump up the economy and the masses won't care who runs the country, but if things get really bad, I think people will help each other out rather than revolt.

Our entire society could fall apart and it would still be imporant to discover who killed JFK, and rather than philosophise about it, I think specifically, we are closer now than ever, so why be so easily distracted?

Coon published The Origin of Races in 1962, but it was not well received. The field of anthropology was moving rapidly from theories of racial typing to other trends, and some of Coon's critics even regarded his work as racist. Both he and Carleton Putnam produced funded Eugenics related research commissioned by Wickliffe P. Draper, founder of The Pioneer Fund and a sponsor of the American Eugenics Society. Coon continued to write and defend his work. He died on June 3, 1981, in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Here is what OSS officer Carleton S. Coon is quoted saying in a report, code-named "The Invisible Empire," written to "Wild Bill" Donovan near the conclusion of World War II. Carleton S. Coon was a Harvard trained anthropologist who used his anthropology professor cover as an OSS super-spy. Coon and is now considered to be the real-life paradigm and prototype for the character: "Indiana Jones." "Wild Bill" Donovan was the Wall Street spy who founded the Office of Special Services during World War II, America's first foreign intelligence agency.
