DID ARISTOTLE ONASSIS KILL BOBBY KENNEDY?

By Simon Edge

September 15, 2010

ON THE eve of a new West End play about his life we reveal how the Greek shipping magnate, who married JFK’s widow Jackie,

is said to have told confidantes he organised the assassination of the late president’s brother.

ON A beach on the Greek island of Skorpios in the late autumn of 1974 the ailing shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis was in confessional mood.

It was two o’clock in the morning and he had been sharing confidences with his latest conquest, a New York photographer called Helene Gaillet.

Now he said suddenly: “You know, Helene, I put up the money for Bobby Kennedy’s murder.”

I have read a fair bit about Onassis over the years and nothing would surprise me. I just picked up a copy of Joachim Joesten's Onassis A Biography after reading Joesten's The Dark Side of Lyndon Johnson, which was far better than his attempt on Onassis.

According to Joesten, Onassis was very hard to approach or research about in the case of his early years, and thats why the book gets a little tired with speculation in my opinion.

Unlike the Dark Side of Lyndon B Johnson, where it was very possible to get people to spill the beans on that man.

Another interesting urban myth is that Onassis was also aware of the impending assassination of JFK, and gave explicit orders not to harm Jackie.
