On 6th December, 1963, Paul Mandel wrote an article about the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Life Magazine. "The doctor said one bullet passed from back to front on the right side of the President’s head. But the other, the doctor reported, entered the President’s throat from the front and then lodged in his body. Since by this time the limousine was 50 yards past Oswald and the President’s back was turned almost directly to the sniper, it has been hard to understand how the bullet could enter the front of his throat. Hence the recurring guess that there was a second sniper somewhere else. But the 8mm film shows the President turning his body far around to the right as he waves to someone in the crowd. His throat is exposed – toward the sniper’s nest – just before he clutches it." Jim Marrs has argued: "The account is patently wrong, as anyone who has seen the film can verify. The reason for such wrongful information at such a critical time will probably never be known, as the author of this statement, Paul Mandel, died shortly afterward."

His son is objecting to comments about his father here:

Stephen, your point is well taken. Do you think Doug Horne crossed a line?

In his article, Mandel seemed resigned to the fact that private lives have become public. His larger point seems to be that we should stop studying the JFK murder.

Since my dad was a small part of a piece of history, a chronicler of it, you can make a case that speculating about his motives and about his death is fair game. In a day and age when personal facts pop up at a click, we're all in the public domain. But on this anniversary, there is one thing I want to ask: When will Americans, we of middle age, especially, move on? Yes, we still feel the sting of that day, but shouldn't there be some sort of mental statute of limitations on traumas like these? In the absence of new witnesses or of other fresh and vital information, might it make sense to stop our chattering and to open files on the other parts of our lives?

The effect of all the conspiracy talk on his family seemed to be minimal for almost fifty years. It was only when Mandel Googled his father's name did he discover his father's connection to assassination lore.

But it wasn't until his name popped up in a Google search that an eerie, even ugly side of his JFK report became clear. My dad had, after all these years -- and without my family realizing it -- become a celebrity in the superheated world of conspiracy websites. He'd turned into nuclear fuel for a whole range of assumptions and arguments, a touchstone for angry postings and rapid-fire computer chat.

What's absent from Mandel's article is the specific reason(s) his father's name became part of JFK assassination lore.

Yes, Horne crossed a line.

We should continue to study and ask questions, but be more circumspect with allegations/

Mandel goofed. I work in news. You try to get it right but you sometimes rely on what other people tell you, and this time Mandel goofed. But Horne throws around words like "lie" and wishes people (not Mandel) a place in hell.

Paris Review On the Shelf

Just two years ago this newspaper published a review of the Advocate in which the reviewer, Paul W. Mandel '51, attacked one of the magazine's writers, Donald Hall '51, for "technical obscurity," specifically the use of the word "Zeitgeist." Mandel complained that "this reviewer had to look it up and you might have to too." Well, Hall didn't like the review and he protested to the CRIMSON. A friend of his on the Lampoon named John P. C. Train didn't like it either, and wrote us a letter saying so.

All of which is to lead up to the fact that a new literary magazine has been published, that both Hall and Train are on its staff, and that the magazine's manifesto proclaims that it will "strive to give predominant space to the fiction and poetry of both established and new writers, rather than to people who use words like Zeitgeist." The manifesto was written by William Styron, young author of the excellent novel "Lie Down in Darkness," whose pet phobia is the word, "Zeitgeist."....

Dear Time-Reader

For Robert Low, TIME Inc.'s Eastern European Correspondent, the last three and a half years of reporting the news from both sides of the Balkans' gradually lowering Iron Curtain has been an excursion in incongruity. The Curtain is securely fastened now—except for Communist and fellow-traveling foreign journalists and Low has returned to the U.S. for a breather.

Low's first-rate reporting job during his tour of duty is perhaps best exemplified by the now historic documents on the Tito-Stalin conflict, which ended in Moscow's excommunication of Marshal Tito. Low managed to get them in advance of general publication and, as printed in TIME'S August 23, 1948 issue, they were the first complete summary of this revealing correspondence. Other Low stories that you may recall include his account of the Communist guerrilla raid on the Greek town of Naousa (TIME, Jan. 31), and Patriot George Magalios and the American aid program for Greece (Jan. 3).

He was in Iran, Iraq, Greece, Turkey, etc. For the past three years, Mr. Low's beat as a roving correspondent has been the Balkan and Near East countries which he has seen, one by one, fall behind the Iron Curtain and blacked out as news sources to the outside world. Sometimes I wonder how these correspondents save their heads. Mr. Low might tell us. .....During dinner that evening, my father mentioned that it was not too early to think about racing our sailboat from Annapolis to Newport again in the coming year. Sailing was a rite of passage for me, and I looked forward to continuing to master its intricacies under my father’s guidance. The previous summer had already extended my knowledge and experience with a small group trip down the Dalmatian coast from Venice to Athens on a seventy-seven-foot Rhodes ketch. Its colorful skipper, a gallant, distinguished former World War II Marine combat captain named Horace (“Hod”) Fuller, had been a delightful legend to sail with. An accomplished sailor, he sometimes kindly took me aside for tutorials on some of the idiosyncrasies of sailing in the Adriatic Sea.

There were, however, a couple of instances during the trip that disturbed me. Late one night, I had awakened to the sound of Hod Fuller having what sounded like combat nightmares from his World War II experiences. No one else in our group wanted to acknowledge it. Years later, my father, a career CIA senior official, having had his usual “generous” intake of alcohol one evening, remarked that “Hod Fuller was one of the best damn assassins we ever had. . . .” A bit stunned, I curiously inquired as to how he went about his assignments. In at least one instance, my father said, Hod had taken his victim out in a rowboat and shot him in the back of the head and then dumped him overboard.....

Lowell M Clucas, Jr. had a career of which spy novels are written. He may have been our only family member to be denounced by Senator Joseph R McCarthy as a "card-carrying Communist," and appearing as #26 on the senator's infamous list in a speech before Congress on February 20, 1950.

Lowell Melcher Clucas, Jr was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on July 14, 1917. He was the son of Lowell Melcher Clucas, Sr and Frances Potter Tileston Clucas. He was the eldest of the couple's three children. His sister, Frances Potter "Sissie" Clucas was born in 1918 and a brother, Charles Clucas was born in 1919.

.....During World War II, he served with the Office of War Information. He served as an editor, 1942-44, a field rep, 1944; chief of section 1945.

Lowell was transferred to the Department of State as chief of radio feature section CAF-12, Jan 1, 1946; he was assistant chief of English section, CAF-13, Jan 12, 1947; and assistant chief of the news section CAF-14, Dec 26, 1948.....”Did Lowell Clucas work for the CIA? Google search turned up a reference to his work as noted in the “Peter Grose Papers” (Princeton Library). The Peter Grose Papers document Grose’s research on Allen Dulles and the Soviet Union. The papers include writings, subject files consisting of research notes and photocopied sources, as well as a small number of photographs. Of note is the Central Intelligence Agency’s declassified history of Allen Dulles' tenure at the CIA. There is a reference to Lowell Clucas in “Series 1: 1942-1999.” It reads: “Clucas, Lowell, 1942-1954.” It can be found in Box 3, Folder 12.

You're correct, Stephen, look only at the man with the three walnut shell halves moving swiftly across the table top. Absolutely no hint that Time-Life

was an intelligence and Op Mockingbird front, or that the contested award of the most expensive single government contract ever awarded has anything to do with two Time-Life board members, one a brother-in-law of Henry Luce, could possibly be related to Paul Mandel's prelude to the WC's nonsense.

Stephen, forgive my tongue in cheek tone in my last reply. It is no excuse, but I reacted to your accusation of "bringing in irrelevant material and ...making unwarranted presumptions. You stated those points as if they were fact. You cannot know that. Of course, you can think I am wrong. I am aware I might be wrong.

As Jim agreed. Mr. & Mrs/ Paul W. Mandel were of privileged background.

So...the son of a man who has been deceased 48 years bitches about reaction on the internet to his father's 50 years old article.

I am more irritated than he is. I want answers, accountability, he wants the same thing his father was working toward.... shutting down discussion and investigation. I could care less about alleged associated mysterious deaths or about CIA involvement.

It is undisputed that the corporation Peter Mandel's father and mother were employed by had purchased the Zapruder film on 23 November, 1963, and that David W. Mandel wrote an article for release less than two weeks later, drawing directly from information viewable in the frames of the Zapruder film.

Problems are that the corporation, Time-Life, Inc., purported to be a journalistic and publication holding company of several, integrated branches, bought the Zapruder film and the exclusive rights to it, not with the intent to make it widely available for viewing by the public, but for the opposite intent, to suppress most of it and to exclusively "interpret" segments of it, as Paul W. Mandel was doing as he wrote a description of what it showed and what it meant, in Life Magazine's first week of December, 1963, issue.

One common trait of both LCN and Richard Cain was ambitious compulsion to over reach. Did the Chicago outfit obtain and defend the TFX contract award, and did they get inside the WC through Earl Warren, Tom Clark, Howard Willens, Albert Jenner, Jr., et al?

I submit the strong suspicion that Richard Cain knew the answers to some of these questions better than anyone outside of the Chicago Outfit's highest echelon. Cain even claimed an association with Life Magazine.

Evidence Implies Order Expected by Dynamics

Hartford Courant - Nov 21, 1963

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate probers produced evidence Wednesday that a top executive of the General Dynamics Corp., claimed "reasonably strong indications" far in advance that the firm would win the huge, disputed TFX warplane... tract. Frank Pace, who has since resigned, was named as the . Deputy Secretary of Defense Roswell L. Gilpatric, testifying before the Senate Investigations subcommittee, swor he had no idea where Pace could have received such information.

Former Legal Adviser

Gilpatric is a former legal adviser to General Dynamics whose role in the TFX contract negotiations is under senatorial fire. He described Pacej as his close friend. Earlier in the day. Chairman John L. McClellan. D-Ark., told Gilpatric that he should have disqualified himself from having anything to do with the contract award, to avoid any possible allegations of conflict of in-i terest. I The subcommittee is investi-. gation whether favoritism' steered the contract to General Dynamics last December. Gilpatric and others in the Defense Department's civilian command overruled military I evaluations that a rival design and bid by the Boeing Co. of Seattle promised a better, cheaper version. Costly Project

The Pentagon estimates the TFX project will cost between $5 billion and $7.5 billion. This would make it the largest in Pentagon history .

I The subcommittee produced a! document dated "July 1961" in! which Pace, top official of Gen-; eral Dynamics' Fort Worth, \ Tex., division, told its top management: "There are reasonably strong

indications that Fort Worth's proposed -: ration offers the only approach] that can satisfy both Air Force and Navy requirements" for (or the TFX. ! McClellan said this was "a, month and seven days" before the Pentagon had even complet-1 ed a statement of design re-! " Where," he demanded, "was the source of these reasonably strong indications?

Ford reported to DeLoach that at a top-secret meeting of the commission held on December 16, 1963 the commission’s general counsel, J.Lee Rankin, had been empowered to retain to “so-called technicians.” The two who were under consideration were Francis W.H. Adams, a former New York City police commissioner, and Albert E. Jenner, Jr., a Chicago lawyer. Ford, the documents disclose, could only remember the last names of the two men. The FBI then began an investigation to determine who “Adams” and “Jenner” were. DeLoach, who was the number three man in the FBI, ranking just uner Hoover and his friende Clyde Tolson, reported, “I told Congressman Ford in strict confidence that apparently Chief Justice Warren was quite close to Drew Pearson (a leading syndicated columnist) and obviously used Pearson from time to time to get his thoughts across as the percentage of the facts in the articles that were absolutely false.”

Henry Crown's / General Dynamic's attorney Albert E. Jenner, Jr. was now also positioned to minimize any risk from the possible investigation of any of several facets of General Dynamics' Industrial Security Manager, I.B. Hale, his wife, Virgnina, and his son, Robert.

Tom Clark's law clerk in the 1956 SCOTUS term was Henry Crown's son, John. In 1963, John Crown was in his fourth year at Jenner's law firm.

Tom Clark signed off on Jenner's appointment to the WC by Earl Warren. Tom Clark's sister-in-law, Mary Ann Collins was the sister of Jack Ruby supporter, Hal Collins.

No speculation in this post, about mysterious deaths or any of the other excuses described in Peter Mandel's Huff Post complaints. Only reports of privileged people who experienced almost instant reversals of fortune after the Assassination of JFK and the Time-Life purchase of the Zapruder film and the subsequent exploitation of the images on its film frames.

In the New York Times a few days after the assassination, Kemp Clark is quoted as saying that Kennedy was struck by 2 bullets, and he specifically mentions one bullet that entered the throat ,"ranged downward and did not exit." This corroborated Perry's thrice mentioning that the throat wound was one of entrance at the Parkland press conference. Mandel might have been referencing Clark's remarks and took them as gospel, at least so far as the throat wound was concerned. He may have then reasoned that Kennedy must have been turned around to receive the throat wound, since he also took as gospel that all shots were fired from the sixth floor. IF MANDEL REGARDED BOTH ASSUMPTIONS AS TRUE-- AND AT THAT EARLY TIME AFTER THE ASSASSINATION ONE COULD HARDLY BLAME HIM FOR THAT--WHAT ELSE would he be EXPECTED TO SAY? So far as the head shot, if he assumed the shot came from the sixth floor, then he is reading into the Parkland testimony a meaning not present in any of the contemporaneous record; he may have simply deduced that the doctors must have believed that because, well, the shots came from behind. All this is a bit slippery of him, but who would know at that early date how convoluted this case would become? He did get his hand caught in the cookie jar, but the anomalies of the case weren't understood when he wrote.

I agree, Daniel, that Mandel was trying to make the statements of the Parkland witnesses fit the widespread belief (at least among the media) that three shots were fired--all from the sniper's nest.

What you seem to miss, along with Mandel's son, is that he made these claims AFTER studying the Zapruder film. That's right, he claimed the Zapruder film SHOWED Kennedy turn around in his seat and face the school book depository before the first shot.

And that's absolute hooey. Such hooey, in fact, that it seems certain that Mandel either 1) did not actually study the film, or 2) deliberately lied about the contents of the film.

Most researchers suspect 2. The question is WHY? And who put him up to it.

I have my own suspicions... Mandel wasn't, after all, the first to claim Kennedy turned his head mid-shooting.

From patspeer.com, chapter 1:

Another 11-23 UPI article would prove even more confusing in light of subsequent developments. This article attempted to clarify the president's wounds by announcing "An authoritative White House source said one bullet entered Kennedy's head and another penetrated the 'neck and chest.' The source said White House officials did not know until this morning about the second wound." This is more than a bit strange. The wound discovered at the autopsy was a small back wound. The existence of this wound would have been brought to the attention of the White House after the autopsy was completed that morning. While Dr. Humes and his autopsy team had reportedly been unaware of the throat wound described the day before until making a phone call this morning, there is no reason to believe he turned around and called the White House to report his belated knowledge of a wound mentioned in all the morning papers. The neck wound in the story would therefore appear to be a reference to the back wound discovered at the autopsy. Since the Warren Commission would also come to misrepresent this back wound as a "neck" wound, and as this first misrepresentation of the back wound as a neck wound came from an "authoritative White House source" it's not unreasonable to suspect this migration of the wound came under direction of the White House. The use of the word "penetrated," however, implies the bullet did not exit, and since the only entrance mentioned at the press conference the day before was the throat wound, the article implies to its readers, regardless of the White House or FBI's intentions in leaking the story, that the bullet entered Kennedy's throat and continued down into his chest, and that the shot came from the front. Who was this "White House source?"

An 11-24 UPI article (found in the Dallas Times Herald) helps clarify the confusing article from the day before. This article, apparently based on the the same 11-23 conversation, states "President Kennedy was shot twice yesterday by an assassin, White House sources said yesterday. First reports said the president was killed by one bullet. It was learned today that the information given the White House was that two bullets entered Kennedy's body. Staff doctors at Parkland Hospital in Dallas said only that the sniper's bullet pierced the mid-section of the front part of his neck and emerged from the top of the skull. White House sources said they understood that one bullet hit Kennedy in the neck area. He bent forward, turned his head and was struck in the skull by the second bullet." This confirms that these "White House sources" knew nothing of the back wound, and were revealing only that the President had been hit twice, and not once, a distinction left open by Dr.s Perry and Clark at the 11-22 Parkland press conference.

These articles are nevertheless interesting in that they suggest the shots came from in front of Kennedy (why else mention that Kennedy turned his head before the head shot other than to explain how a wound on the back of his head could have been caused by someone firing from in front of him?) well after it was apparent to others that, at the precise moment the shots were fired, Oswald's workplace was behind Kennedy.

Scratch that. The juxtaposition of the Parkland claim the throat wound was an entrance wound with the description of the shooting by "White House sources" created the appearance the "White House sources" also believed the shot came from the front. When they quite possibly did not. An 11-23 penned article in the 11-24 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner by Warren Rogers also presents the views of these "sources." It relates: "A White House source said it appeared the President was slain by two bullets, instead of one as originally reported. This source said one bullet entered Kennedy's head and, as he turned, the other penetrated his neck and chest." Well, I'll be. This White House source was claiming the first shot hit Kennedy in the back of the head, while the one talking to UPI had said the first shot hit him in the front of the neck. Hmmm... It seems quite possible from this that they were in fact the same source, and that this source had no insight on the shot sequence, but was simply stressing to its media contacts that having an entrance wound in Kennedy's throat and entrance wound on the back of his head DID NOT mean there were two shooters.

Thanks Pat for the additional citations--most interesting indeed. I would have liked to think that Mandel never really studied the Z-fim, that is, option 1. If he had studied the film and told a whopper, it must have been his conviction that the film would never be made public, and he could therefore say anything he wanted about it. Also, just read Paul Rigby's post on the related thread -- a magnificent gathering of information and analysis. Yes Pat, it seems incontrovertible that Mandel saw the film, and adjusted his remarks to harmonize with the Dallas' observations with regard to the neck wound.

Paul Mandel is accountable for the garbage that he wrote about a critical piece of evidence in the JFK assassination. The LBJ-CIA governmental murderers of John Kennedy had to camouflage that John Kennedy was shot twice from the front - once in his throat and the head kill shot to his front right temple.

They were trying to blame it all on Oswald who was *supposed* to be sitting in a sniper's nest 88 yards to the rear in the TSBD.

So Paul Mandel's son Peter wants to whine in Huffington Post that JFK researchers find his father's work to be absurd and an enabling factor in the cover up of the JFK assassination.

LIFE Magazine on 11/22/63, with RFK’s assistance, was preparing a story with a SWAT team of reporters that would have knocked LBJ out of the vice presidency and maybe into jail.

LIFE Magazine on 11/24/63 was pretty much immediately beginning the cover up of the JFK assassination by buying the rights to the Zapruder Film, sitting on it, and hiding the fact that JFK’s head was getting knocked backward from a front right head kill shot. You ought to read what LIFE did after the Warren Report was released in September 1964 and they broke the plates on their presses twice to make 3 different issues to get the propaganda and photos just right.

Read: “JFK: How the Media Assassinated the Real Story” By Robert Hennelly and Jerry Policoff. Scroll down to the section about LIFE.

http://www.ctka.net/policoff.html

“But it is not the articles in that edition of Life that are so extraordinary, but the pictures, and the pains that were taken to rework them so they fit the Warren report perfectly. The October 2, 1964, issue underwent two major revisions after it hit the stands, expensive changes that required breaking and resetting plates twice, a highly unusual occurrence.”

Then, I return to my question: Why did his son not to do some research first on the subject instead of attacking those goofy Conspiracy Theorists, who happen to be exactly right about his.

Maybe the son is not just a writer of children's books, as the byline says he is.

I didn't read the article as an attack, FWIW. It was more like a call for peace. Peter Mandel was disturbed to find that his long-dead father has been implicated in some conspiracy theories. He apparently thinks (or wants to believe) these theories are groundless. But he didn't insinuate or claim that everyone holding these theories is mentally ill, etc, or should be shunned, a la some of the rave reviews of Bugliosi's book. He just said we should all move on.

I took the opportunity to add to the story in the comments sections, as did David Lifton. The article, in total, if one reads the comments, then, presents a relatively balanced discussion of a son asking people to leave his dead father alone, and researchers explaining why this is so hard to do.

And that's about as much as we can hope for from the Huffington Post.
