Dec. 4, 2014 (EIRNS)--Today, Putin gave his Annual Address to the
Federal Assembly (the bicameral legislature), his highest-profile
public address of the year. Putin spoke to an audience of 1,000
dignitaries of all sorts, in the Kremlin's ornate St. George's
Hall.
Completely unlike his previous two such addresses during his
present Presidential term, which each began with and focussed
mainly on the socio-economic and political development of Russia,
this one began with an impassioned appeal to Russians to defend
Russia's very existence, arms in hand, just as they had in World
War II against Hitler. What follows are brief extracts.
After summing up the past year's developments in Ukraine and
Crimea, Putin said, "Of course, we have the right to ask
questions. What was this Ukrainian tragedy for? Wasn't it
possible to settle all the issues, even disputed issues, within a
legal framework and legitimately? But now we are being told that
this was actually competent, balanced policies that we should
comply with unquestionably and blindfolded.
"This will never happen.
"If for some European countries, national pride is a
long-forgotten concept, and sovereignty is too much of a luxury,
true sovereignty for Russia is absolutely necessary for survival.

reaction on behalf of the United States or its allies to our
position regarding the events and the coup in Ukraine, or even
