John Simkin
Have the nuclear powers any right in insisting other countries such as Iran should not have nuclear weapons. All those countries that have nuclear weapons have argued in the past that they needed nuclear weapons to protect themselves from hostile attacks. For example, have the possession of nuclear weapons has probably prevented all out war between India and Pakistan. If the nuclear deterrent argument works for nuclear powers, why does it not work for countries who don’t have such weapons, but would like to have them? It also raises another question. Would the United States and the UK have invaded Iraq if they knew that the country had nuclear weapons? I think we all know the answer to that one. We also know why Bush is so keen that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons.
