Gil Jesus
In 1960, Patrice Lumumba, the duly elected socialist Prime Minister of the Congo, comes to Washington looking for help from the US, but President Eisenhower refuses to see him. He then turns to the Soviet Union. The CIA then conspires with fascist military rebels to remove Lumumba from power and in spite of attempts to save Lumumba by President-elect Kennedy, Lumumba is killed by those rebel forces just days before JFK is inaugurated. Narrated by Oilver Stone. Edited January 4, 2023 by Gil Jesus
James DiEugenio
What happened in Congo was an epic tragedy. Jonathan Kwitny wrote about it in his book Endless Enemies. He said that what Africa needed more than anything was a democratic example that would finally reverse the evils of colonialism and use the resources there for the Africans. So once a democratically elected, constitutional republic is finally set up in sub Saharan Africa, who helps to subvert in aid of the colonialist power: the USA. Kwitny and others think that the murder of Lumumba was a really terrible blow for the future of Africa. I tend to agree.

IMO, one of the most powerful chapters in the JFK-Destiny Betrayed documentary was the sequence about LBJ's horrific foreign policy reversals in the Congo, Indonesia, Vietnam, and throughout the world after 11/22/63. It's something that everyone in America needs to see.

Anthony Thorne
Mahoney was great. I actually wrote to him afterwards and told him he came off well in the documentary, and that I liked his books. He wrote a nice thank you back.
