My sister has done a lot of research.  I searched my grandfather's name online and found the research someone had done on my father's ancestors.  Both my grandfather's and father's family were all correct.  Anyway, my great, great ..., great grandfather left Germany and sailed from Rotterdam in 1740 and settled in NC.  And the real family name is Veit.

I was fortunate to actually know my great grandmother, who lived to an age of 99.  She was the last surviving woman on a Civil War Widow pension in the state of Illinois.   She married a much older man.   She walked from Tennessee to Illinois behind a covered wagon in the 19th century and was still living when the first satellites were sent into space.
