Derek McMillan
Croydon NUT are to stage a half-day strike next Monday (1st March). The strike is against £8 million of cuts to the education budget and the threat of redundancies. One way in which the council is suggesting heads can manage budget cuts is by "altering the balance" of staffing in their schools - employing more assistants and fewer teachers. In this sense we could see the Croydon action as the first strike action against Workforce Remodelling. The strike ballot had a 43% turnout and 82% vote in favour action - so it is pretty solid. They are holding a demonstration and rally outside the council offices (there is a council meeting that evening).
