The mention given Ms. Martin in Thomas Mallon’s Mrs. Paine’s Garage fuels my interest. He quotes Ruth Paine as saying, “You have to understand, I think her life came apart . . . I believe her daughter was struck as a pedestrian and killed, and I think she saw it as part of the plot” (p. 125). Hopefully, Paine’s belief is plain wrong. At least, Teresa Smith is alive and well.
