Louis J. Roussell

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know anything about him? I believe he was an oilman who was connected to Clay Shaw and Lloyd Cobb but can't seem to find out much more about him.

Francesca,

I don't have much on Roussell but I can tell you that he began his career as a streetcar conductor. He eventually progressed to being a New Orleans banker. In 1966, he became the franchise owner of the National Football Team in New Orleans.

Hi James,

thanks for the info, didn't have it. I am interested I him because I've read that he was connected to Shaw and Lloyd Cobb.

Francesca;

I spent considerable time & effort in accumulating the "Roussel" connection response. Only to lose it.

However, being as somewhat "hard headed" as I am, I seldom completely give up.

So, you will have to judge the merit of the provided information.

Tom.

William Oswald was one of the first Electrical Engineers in South Louisiana. He is partially responsible for "Lighting" the Cotton Exposition of 1884, as well as thereafter going to work for Edison Electric which converted the horse drawn trolly car system of New Orleans, LA to the electric trolly system.

Which of course now required "Street Car Conductors".

Hey Blake,

Here's one I'll bet you can't find any info about. A German electrician was an associate of Thomas Edison and electrified the 1884 Cotton Exposition in New Orleans. His name was William Oswald. That was quite a feat he performed at the Exposition. Can you tell us anything about him? What was the company he worked for? Where did he live? Thomas Edison we all know. Dear Jeff,

This is a bet you lose. William Oswald, as you say, was a German immigrant born in 1860. He was one of the first electrical engineers in New Orleans.

In August 1884, Mr. Maurice Hart and his associates organized the Louisiana Light and Power Co. and obtained the contract for lighting the main building at the Cotton Centennial Exhibition. William Oswald was superintendent of this project.

In August 1886, the City Council granted the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of New Orleans permission to erect boilers at 1004-1008 Baronne St. Heading the board of directors was Thomas Alva Edison. Oswald resigned from his position with the Louisiana company and joined the Edison company. And it was this company that installed the first interior lighting.

The first building to be lighted was Leon Lamothe's saloon. Located on the first block of St. Charles Street, the saloon had a wire run to it that was connected to a small dynamo that was, in turn, connected to an engine at the St. Charles Hotel.

For most of his life, William Oswald resided in Covington, and this is where he died at age 83 on March 6, 1943.

But we know who ultimately won the battle for lighting the streets, buildings, and houses of New Orleans. The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. was the first to supply incandescent lighting, and William Oswald was a major player

One, perhaps final, comment. Then one can become lost in the maze if they so desire.

Under the assumption that everyone knows who "Clem Sehrt" is:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/whitmeysehrt.htm

When the HSCA investigated Marguerite Oswald's links to associates of Carlos Marcello, Clem Sehrt's name came to their attention through Aaron Kohn of the New Orleans Crime Commission. (5) First, one of Sehrt's law partners had served as an attorney for Carlos Marcello. Second, Sehrt had been closely associated with a banking official named Louis Rousell for many years, particularly in the 1950's, who, in turn, had been closely linked to Carlos Marcello. Kohn informed the Committee that both Sehrt and Rousell had been "...long involved in a number of highly questionable undertakings, both business and political." (Sehrt was elected president of the National American Bank in 1963, having served on the board of directors since 1958, and previously had been general counsel to the state banking department and the Orleans Levee Board during the 1950's, in addition to practicing law for thirty years.) (6)

It is conceivable that Sehrt and Andrews knew each other professionally and/or personally, and that Sehrt attempted to pass on a request for Oswald's representation to him. Given the fact that Sehrt's law office was in the Pere Marquette Building, it is also possible that he could be linked to G. Wray Gill, David Ferrie and even Eugene Hale Brading (a.k.a Jim Braden), although not necessarily to the assassination itself. If there is ever another investigation of the JFK assassination, the curious connections of Clem Sehrt should certainly command more attention than was the case in 1964 and 1978.

Hi James,

thanks for the info, didn't have it. I am interested I him because I've read that he was connected to Shaw and Lloyd Cobb.

Francesca;

Which of course now required "Street Car Conductors".

http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/2...07-12/blake.php

William Oswald, the German immigrant electrician, played some role in helping to bring electricity to New Orleans. What about him? Jeff

I'm not sure anyone is interested in this but it might be worth noting here that Clem Sehrt and Louis Roussell were board members of the Traders and General Insurance Co. of Dallas. Board Chairman was Leo Corrigan.

I would have posted this image of Louis Roussell earlier but I was having some problems with my photo files.

FWIW.

Thanks James and Thomas for all the info and photo! That's great, thomas you certainly dug up quite a bit on this man. Haven't had much time to look it all through in detail as am busy packing to go away in a couple of days but one thing caught my eye. The mention of a 'Henry Roussell who served with Oswald?! Weird, is he any relation to Louis? Now that would be more than a mere coincidence!

James

Actually, there were many "William Oswald's"

Mostly cousins, etc.

William Oswald, father of Robert E. Lee Oswald (Sr.) and grandfather to LHO, also had a son named William who also lived in New Orleans as well.

In addition, there was Thomas Oswald, and Harvey Oswald, as well as Robert and William.

Therefore, there were four sons to continue generation of the Oswald name.

The son of William worked at Reilly Coffee Company (aka Standard Coffee aka Luzianne Coffee).

This is the reference which LHO gave on his employment application. (Hazel Oswald, widow of William Oswald, and whom LHO visited)

Little is known of the "Julius" Oswald, as well as the other female Oswald who worked at Reilly.

Someone was supposed to have checked into this long ago, but has never gotten back to me in regards to whom Julius was descended from.

Jonsson's business leadership and civic service record singled him out as the one citizen who could see Dallas through its worst crisis in the aftermath of President John Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963.

Jonsson, head of the Citizens Council that year, was the official host for the luncheon at the Dallas Trade Mart where Kennedy was headed and never arrived. He dealt with the immediate situation - involving 2,600 guests in various levels of distress - as only one with a lifetime of experience in handling emergencies could. He wasn't so sure, however, he was up to helping solve the ensuing one, two months later, upon Mayor Earle Cabell's resignation 15 months ahead of term.

Finding an interim mayor on short notice was difficult enough, but one who could pull up a people mired in emotional sociopolitical issues and manage a city then billed the world over as a den of violence and hate? That, the Citizens Council agreed, left but one suitable candidate. He, however, "wouldn't have run for notary public" at that time. Furthermore, becoming Mr. Mayor (as he is often addressed 15 years after the fact)

That was merely "forwards"!

One must also work backwards if they wish to make all of the connections.

The "Covington" residence of William Oswald (Great-Grandfather to LHO) was, due to anti-german sentiment, burned during WWI. (Thomas Purvis)

Tom,

Regarding William Oswald, I believe he had a nephew also named William Oswald.

BTW, do you know anything about a Julius J. Oswald who worked at the Standard Coffee Co. in New Orleans?

Thanks, Tom.

I did some checking and the William Oswald in question was William S. Oswald. His uncle was also William S. Oswald and both were from Metairie in New Orleans. The younger William said that his uncle had received a visit from Lee Harvey during the summer of 1963.

As to Julius J. Oswald, he was supposedly to have met with Jim Garrison but I have no idea what transpired there.

FWIW.

BTW, do you know who this is below? He is either William Oswald or he is related to Donald Norton somehow.

James
