Masters of Deceit: Propaganda, Disinformation and Corruption

A good deal, but not all, of the details of this parallel black CIA operation have been set forth in the Watergate forum, specifically in the topics called A Concise CIA-Pentagon Papers-Watergate Timeline and R. Spencer Oliver. Other details are laid out in an external page, the Remote Viewing Timeline.

And so it stood in the last months of 1972, after the remote viewing program had been officially started with a secret 1 October 1972 CIA contract with two Scientology OTs: NSA's own Hal Puthoff and Ingo Swann. By January of 1973 Helms and Gottlieb (of course with the knowledge of Vernon Walters and William Colby) had erased all their tracks by destroying CIA records.

In Book Three of Sinister Forces, author Peter Levenda deals extensively with Scientology, Stanford Research Institute, remote viewing, and some of the persons involved. These are just a few excerpts:

One of the strangest--and, at the same time, most documented and revealing of military and government appreciation of the paranormal--was the series of "remote viewing" experiments that were variously part of the Pentagon's own programs as well as subcontracted by the military and intelligence community to private contractors. As mentioned briefly in Book 1, this program was known under a variey of rubrics, but the most dramatic and best known of these was STAR GATE, but it also included CENTER LANE and SUN STREAK. Oddly enough, the most celebrated participants of the remote viewing endeavor were Scientologists.

....Puthoff, Price and Swann were members of Scientology at the time they formed the nucleus of the remote viewing project in 1972 at the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California, an important scientific think-tank on the level of the RAND Corporation.

This sounds like the stuff of fantasy fiction, but it has been documented quite thoroughly by science writer Jim Schnabel in
Remote Viewers
: The Secret History of America's Psychic Spies....Schnabel's account brings us back to some of our old friends from Book 1--Andrija Puharich, Uri Geller, "Spectra," and "Hoova"--and also introduces us to some new ones, including officers and enlisted men of the US Army, former NSA employees, the CIA, The National Security Agency Council, and a coven of US senators bent on protecting the psi-war program from federal budget cuts....

Professor Hal Puthoff was as much the product of his generation as anyone else. Although he had a stint with the National Security Agency (NSA), he was primarily a laser physicist and contributed heavily to the development of laser technology. His associate, Russell Targ, was another laser physicist, and the two formed an unforgettable partnership at SRI during this period. Laser technology owes a great deal to quantum mechanics, of which Puthoff was of course quite aware. It was perhaps this background in the strange science of lasers and the quanta that led Puthoff to examine alternative religious and mystical groups and individuals, and to his becoming a Scientologist. He eventually wrote a grant proposal, asking that he be allowed to conduct some preliminary tests of psychic abilities.

Somehow, the proposal came to the attention of Ingo Swann, who was himself a Scientologist and being tested for psychic abilities in New York City, where he lived. He contacted Puthoff, and it was agreed that he fly out to California in June 1972 to undertake some informal testing.....

The timeline is not lost on Levenda who notes:

The year 1972 saw some amazing political developments, some of which were secret at the time and not revealed until much later, and some of which became obvious almost overnight. Howard Hughes declared the Clifford Irving book to be a hoax in January; The Zodiac killings were by then in full swing in California; J. Edgar Hoover died in May, and George Wallace almost died a few weeks later, victim of an assassination attempt by Arthur Bremer. In late May to mid-June the Watergate breakins were taking place..... (I know, I know)

Quietly, however, another development was taking place. This time the venue was a scientific laboratory in Menlo Park, California. One June 6, 1972, the artist and sometimes astrologer Ingo Swann used his mental powers to disturb the operation of a magnetometer buried in a concrete well at the Stanford Research Institute.

Four months later, the CIA would fund SRI to the tune of fifty thousand dollars to continue that research, after intermediate testing had demonstrated the uncanny abilities of Swann and other psychics to penetrate top-secret military installations using only their minds.

I hope you'll accept this belated thanks for the pointer, Michael. It's good to see that some some small glimmers of the truth are beginning to mined from the cubic tons of disinformation that have been dumped all over the field.

From my research, I'm of the opinion that no one could overstate the lengths to which the CIA has gone, over a period of many decades, to keep these connections and origins hidden, and—where exposed at all—downplayed with unabashed thundering lies.

I still am in awe of anyone who can have even a nodding acquaintance with the so-called investigative congressional committees of the '70s that supposedly were cleaning house at CIA, yet blithely can ignore the cover-up by those same committees of the concommitant existence of this extensive and very black CIA/DIA program and its origins—or, even worse, their ignorance of it.

Anyone who does so and claims the name "historian" might be better served with "charlatan."

If the very nature, length, extent, and depth of the cover-up of these state secrets is any measure at all of their infamy, we yet are seeing only the claws of the beast uncovered. And given the parallel track of its development throughout the CIA's Pentagon Papers op and its deformed twin, Watergate, I belive that anyone continuing to assert or believe in some kind of disconnect between those and the conception, gestation, and birth of the CIA's bastard RV monstrosity merely is suffering through the heartbreaking stage of denial.
