Films coming about poisoned former spy

Depp has a brain and a soul among his vital organs, and lives in another country where they have perspective.

But he may lack the backbone to stand up to the forces that will oppose him if he tries to give context to the murder.

Context is public enemy #1.

"Depp to Make Film About Poisoned Ex-Spy

The Associated Press

Saturday, January 13, 2007; 1:11 PM

LONDON -- Johnny Depp is making a film about a former Russian spy whose poisoning death in London has touched off an international mystery, the trade magazine Variety reported.

Warner Bros. has bought the rights to a book about Alexander Litvinenko for Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, the magazine reported Friday. Depp will produce the film and could star in it, the report said.

Warner Bros. is racing against director Michael Mann and Colombia Pictures, which has agreed to pay $1.5 million for the rights to another book being co-written by the former spy's widow Marina Litvinenko, and Alex Goldfarb, a close friend, Variety reported later on its Web site. The book is expected to be published in May by Simon & Schuster's Free Press imprint, the report said.

Warner Bros. had tried unsuccessfully to buy the rights to the book by Litvinenko's widow, the report said. The studio has acquired the rights to a book by New York Times journalist Alan Cowell, which is expected to be published next year by Doubleday.

...

The report said Columbia envisions an espionage thriller "exploring the collision between the deep rooted Russian power structure enforced by the KGB ... and the new wave of wild west capitalism" that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union..."

(And proceeded the collapse of the Soviet Union...?)

Don't tell me, it's to be called:

DEAD MAN (wait he already did that)

DEAD MAN'S CHEST (that's no good either)

SLOW BURN (you know, radiation...shoot did that one too)

210 JUMP STREET (polonium-210)

ONCE UPON A TIME IN PICCADILLY (no, too similar)

HOTEL GRAY (The Millenium would not like that. A gray is the equal to US rad, 1 rad = 0.01 gray)

ITSU NICE TO MEET YOU (Itsu Sushi would sue him )

Okay how about REALLY BAD FISH...or... A MEAL TO REMEMBER.

Whatever the name I would give it "glowing" reviews.

A nice find Myra!

Speaking of which, has the investigation of who/how killed Litvenenko progressed? I think not.... It seems to have disappeared from the news...like so many 'news' items when not new and not about nothing [star or starlette scandal, for example], but about control groups in powerful countries taking 'care of [their] business of control'.

Sure it's progressed:

"Expert in Russian poisoning case is shot

FBI joins investigation but officials think it's just local crime

WASHINGTON - FBI agents say they are assisting police in suburban Washington who are investigating the shooting of a Russian expert — a man who spoke out on "Dateline NBC" last weekend and strongly suggested that remnants of the KGB were responsible for the bizarre poisoning death of Alexander Litvinenko.

The Russian expert, Paul Joyal, was shot Thursday night as he got out of his car in front of his house in Adelphi, Md. Investigators in Prince Georges County say a witness claims to have seen two men running away after the shooting. Joyal remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the midsection. Authorities have not said whether they've been able to talk to him.

Joyal is a long-time consultant on security and Russian affairs. From 1980 to 1989, he was director of security for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

On last weekend's "Dateline," he said of Litvenenko's death: "A message has been communicated to anyone who wants to speak out against the Kremlin: 'If you do, no matter who you are, where you are, we will find you and we will silence you — in the most horrible way possible.'"

...

In an odd twist, another person who appeared on the "Dateline" broadcast died of a heart attack last month. Reporter Daniel McGrory of the Times of London, who has written about the Litvinenko case, died Feb. 20, before the "Dateline" segment was broadcast. He was 54.

His family said he "died suddenly at home."

It has pretty much disappeared from the news here too the last couple of months. I think the last piece of news related to the case was in late December when it was reported that the Italian lawyer who met with him the day he died was arrested when he returned to Italy. I think he was charged with gun running and other weird and wonderful charges.

Let's see, radioactive poisoning, a heart attack, bullets - what's next? My money is on a small plane crash.

These deaths are going to wreak havoc with the writing of the screenplay for Depp's movie. How is it going to end? (Reminds me of The Big Sleep, in which even the author didn't know who killed one of the characters.)

Good thread title, Myra.

Films coming about poisoned former spy, It's tempting to hope one will do it right, but what are the odds?

My answer is the chances approximate to zero.

This is suspiciously like the roll out of the latest Hollywood genre - anti-Russian movies for a new generations of consumers.
