But he may lack the backbone to stand up to the forces that will oppose him if he tries to give context to the murder. Context is public enemy #1. "Depp to Make Film About Poisoned Ex-Spy The Associated Press Saturday, January 13, 2007; 1:11 PM LONDON -- Johnny Depp is making a film about a former Russian spy whose poisoning death in London has touched off an international mystery, the trade magazine Variety reported. Warner Bros. has bought the rights to a book about Alexander Litvinenko for Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, the magazine reported Friday. Depp will produce the film and could star in it, the report said. Warner Bros. is racing against director Michael Mann and Colombia Pictures, which has agreed to pay $1.5 million for the rights to another book being co-written by the former spy's widow Marina Litvinenko, and Alex Goldfarb, a close friend, Variety reported later on its Web site. The book is expected to be published in May by Simon & Schuster's Free Press imprint, the report said. Warner Bros. had tried unsuccessfully to buy the rights to the book by Litvinenko's widow, the report said. The studio has acquired the rights to a book by New York Times journalist Alan Cowell, which is expected to be published next year by Doubleday. ... Sure it's progressed: "Expert in Russian poisoning case is shot FBI joins investigation but officials think it's just local crime Pete Williams Justice correspondent WASHINGTON - FBI agents say they are assisting police in suburban Washington who are investigating the shooting of a Russian expert — a man who spoke out on "Dateline NBC" last weekend and strongly suggested that remnants of the KGB were responsible for the bizarre poisoning death of Alexander Litvinenko. The Russian expert, Paul Joyal, was shot Thursday night as he got out of his car in front of his house in Adelphi, Md. Investigators in Prince Georges County say a witness claims to have seen two men running away after the shooting. Joyal remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the midsection. Authorities have not said whether they've been able to talk to him. Joyal is a long-time consultant on security and Russian affairs. From 1980 to 1989, he was director of security for the Senate Intelligence Committee. On last weekend's "Dateline," he said of Litvenenko's death: "A message has been communicated to anyone who wants to speak out against the Kremlin: 'If you do, no matter who you are, where you are, we will find you and we will silence you — in the most horrible way possible.'" ... In an odd twist, another person who appeared on the "Dateline" broadcast died of a heart attack last month. It has pretty much disappeared from the news here too the last couple of months. I think the last piece of news related to the case was in late December when it was reported that the Italian lawyer who met with him the day he died was arrested when he returned to Italy. These deaths are going to wreak havoc with the writing of the screenplay for Depp's movie. How is it going to end? My answer is the chances approximate to zero. This is suspiciously like the roll out of the latest Hollywood genre - anti-Russian movies for a new generations of consumers.
