Sports Skull and Bones

I have always thought the Augusta National Golf Club was sports version of Yale's Skull and Bones. From USA Today (2002) I obtained the following membership list shown at the end.

Membership is fluid and highly secretive (as well as until recently, quite racist) so the list is only indicative of a snapshot in time, though extrapolation of membership back to the 30's or 60's needn't be difficult. Whilst not officially recognised on the list it is commonly known that several US presidents have been on the list.

The industrial movers and shakers should be well known to all on this board, at least for who they represent as oppossed to personally :tomatoes. Oil, finance, gas, manufacturing e.g. Bechtel brothers ;)

Membership is generally 300 and death or expulsion (none known to date) are the only ways to leave. That means at any given time only 300 members of this club exist. I see a defence secretary and secretary of state in the list. I'm sure all the lists would be mighty interesting.

There are also some members who ostensibly seem to be purely there on golf merit e.g. Arnold Palmer. Perhaps allowing real golfers in to deal with the PR side.

The youngest member on my quick scan of the list was one Bill Gates.

I've often wondered if important decisions are made in the sanctity of this very private, very secretive, members by invite only club/cadre/cartel.

As Martha Burk states "Far from being a place where friends gather for golf, Augusta National is a gathering of corporate power players like no other. Deals are made, careers are changed, and even national policy is affected through relationships such as those of the 19 members of Augusta National who sit on the Council on Foreign Relations."

Opinions please?

Hi Gary

Although I have always understod, at least partly, the exclusivity of this group.....I have never been alert or clever enough to see the true POWER that is here assembled. Golf is definitely on the sidebar !

This is a faction of power that cannot be placed in the back seat. A very alert comparison to Skull and Bones.

I would hate to even imagine the decisions discussed here that have enabled the continued disenfranchisement of what was once the "American Middle Class" !

I am probably most disheartened however with myself. I once truly believed that this was a republic that was truly "Of, For, and By the People of these United States" ! I truly believed this.

I was also foolish enough to believe that the true path to success was thru hard work, intelligence, and loyalty ! I even believed that anyone American born, could become President of The United States.

Looking back now, I realize that I could not have been TAUGHT these lies. I no doubt merely MISUNDERSTOOD !
