Kathleen Collins
11:40 am: A gas plant exploded in Dallas, TX. The area has been evacuated. Fox News said it happened on the southwest side of Dallas and they mentioned Commerce St. and that the smoke from the fire was heading "downtown. " Several people have been rushed to Parkland Hospital. I don't know how far this fire is to Dealey Plaza. Some highways have been shut off to drivers. They didn't say anything about Stemmons Freeway, but the highways mentioned were I-30, I-35. Can you imagine if it travels to Dealey Plaza? I'm going to get a map of Dallas and look where it is: South Industrial Blvd. Kathy
Kathleen Collins
It was a combination of acetylene and propane that caused the fire. Kathy
Jack White
Kathy...it preempted local tv all morning. It is at the junction of I30 and I35 (Stemmons), just west of Dealey Plaza...right across Stemmons from Reunion Tower. Heavy oxygen tanks were thrown 200 feet by explosions. Twenty or more cars as far as 100 feet away caught fire from the intense heat. All firemen could do was let the fire burn itself out. It was too dangerous to fight. Both interstates were closed for more than three hours, and you have never seen such a traffic snarl. As yet, no fatalities reported. Jack

All I could think of is Dealey Plaza catching on fire. What would we do if it didn't exist anymore? It would be like erasing President Kennedy from the earth. In history the assassination would become this dim thing no one alive remembers. On the other hand, there are many people, I suppose mostly British, who are on this huge Forum about Jack the Ripper. So that stayed in the mainstream consciousness. Forty-Five years from now is anybody going to care about Kennedy? When Gore Vidal says President Kennedy was the worst President we ever had because "He brought us close to nuclear war," he is very mistaken. The military and the joint chiefs of staff were wanting that. A small nuclear war with Cuba so we could install democracy there. Kennedy felt we couldn't control the whole world, nor should we impose our will upon another nation. He preferred diplomacy. The stupid military wanted nuclear war. I read this in Brothers. Jack White
Stemmons is still shut down ten hours after the explosion. The site of the explosion is just southwest of the triple underpass, about a ten minute walk from the Plaza. They expect all debris to be removed from the freeway by ten p.m. tonight. Most remarkable is that there were no fatalities, considering the the exploding oxygen tanks which were tossed like missiles hundreds of feet onto nearby roads. Dozens of cars near the site caught fire from intense heat. It was quite a TV event all day locally. Some motorists were stuck on the freeways for as long as four hours, with cars backed up for many miles. Jack
