Guest Stephen Turner
I thought it would be nice to have a thread on some of the Funny, ridiculous, profound And off the wall statements made by footballs Philosophers, con men and clowns. I will kick off with the incomparable Bill Shankly. "Some people think football is a matter of life and death, I assure them it is much more serious than that." And Jimmy Greaves, talking about his alcoholism. "I remember walking up in a skip, and thinking, where did the 1980s go."
Ed Waller
"You can't win anything with kids" Hansen - Alas he was wrong. "I spent my money on Booze, Birds and Fast Cars...The rest I just squandered!" G Best (what a misogynist?)

Agreed, Great footballer that he was George has always been a caveman in his attitude towards Women Here's one that shows Alf Ramsey's supreme self belief. In April 1963, having just lost 5-2 to France, a reporter asked Ramsey, "Mr Ramsey how do you think England will do in the 1966 World Cup Ramsey, "Why, we will win it of course." And Martin Buchan, Man Utd,s intellectual half back from the 70's Reporter, (at airport) "Martin, have you got a quick word for our readers?" Buchan, "Velocity!!!! John Simkin
Brian Clough: "If God wanted us to play football in the air, he'd have built a pitch in the clouds". Clough, Shankley and Ferguson are all football managers who have claimed in the past to be socialists. I see Paul Jewell of Wigan is the latest manager to claim he is a socialist. Do you think it helps you to become a good manager? I hear that Jose Mourinho holds extreme right-wing views. Maybe it means you to be authoritarian to be a good manager. Guest Stephen Turner
" Each person brings different strengths to the team, and each supports the other, its how I like my football, and my socialism" Bill Shankly. "My father and four brothers all went down (the pits) They were all good trade union men, and I like-wise. Matt Busby. The difference between these two and Mourinho? Shankly biult two great sides from nothing, Busby Three. And neither felt the need to cheat a whole people out of their birthright to do so.
