John Simkin Posted February 26, 2006 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Some of the best football managers have been committed socialists: Bill Shankly, Jock Stein, Brian Clough, Peter Taylor, Alec Ferguson, etc. The best young manager in the Premiership, Paul Jewell, is also a socialist (he was a Trotskyist in his youth). It is no surprise to me that socialists make the best football managers. They also make the best teachers. The reason is that they have a passionate desire to bring out the best in people. They realize that coaching/teaching is all about developing potential. Whereas conservatives have a negative view of the human condition. Authoritarian conservatives make the worst managers (and teachers) because they attempt to rely on old fashioned methods of coaching.
