John Simkin
My mother lives on a council estate called Basildon. Her ward has always returned a Labour councillor. However, membership of the local party has fallen so low that it was unable to persuade anyone to stand in the May elections. In fact, no one stood. As a result, she no longer has an elected councillor to represent her. I suspect this is what happened in Dagenham where the BNP won every seat where they put up a candidate. I expect the same thing will happen at the next local elections. This appalling Labour government certainly has done a lot for local democracy.
