But things get weirder and weirder. Here’s a piece I wrote on “The Finders” in 2010: Did The Finders Create a “Bourne Identity”? Suppose you have a thirty-year cult, run by a southern eccentric with ties to the Central Intelligence Agency. Suppose that cult raised children in austere surroundings combined with advanced education, perhaps to be used by said intelligence agency? Suppose that cult was investigated for child abuse/neglect but the investigation was shut down for “National Security” reasons? Sound like something out of a movie? Young “Jason Bournes” being created, nurtured and trained for future use? Well, something like that seems to have happened in “The Finders” cult. The unraveling of “The Finders” case brought to the forefront many long-rumored stories about possible child trafficking as well as those about children being trained for use as spies and assassins. In February 1987, a tip to the police led to the arrest of two “well dressed men” in a park in Tallahassee Florida. The men appeared to be “supervising” a group of six disheveled and hungry children. The men, who were based out of Washington D.C., were charged with child abuse. The D.C. police raided a house and warehouse, where they found many items that implicated “The Finders” cult in international intrigue and what appears to be ritual sacrifice of animals. The children were temporarily moved to an undisclosed location under armed guard due to threats to authorities. This all sounds like typical internet rumor-mongering, except the story was carried by The New York Times and U.S. News And World Report. The smoking gun was a report by U.S. Customs agent Ramon Martinez. Customs was called in to investigate a possible link to child pornography or child trafficking, and the Martinez document is shocking. There were indeed photos of many children, some naked. This in itself is not surprising due to the commune-type upbringing of The Finders. There were also photos of members in white robes, with the children, in what appears to be ritual sacrifice of goats. The Finders claim it was merely typical harvesting of animals on a farm, but the children actively participated in the disembowelment. At the time of the arrest, despite the “well dressed” appearance of the adult men, the children seemed to have no knowledge of such things as electricity and hot running water. In a strange twist, they seemed highly educated. Details of what was found in the warehouse and the customs report can be read in this report by Dave McGowan. Other items seized from the finders included Telex messages about obtaining children from Hong Kong, international money transfers, and this, from the Martinez report: “Further inspection of the premises disclosed numerous files relating to activities of the organization in different parts of the world. Locations I observed are as follows: London, Germany, the Bahamas, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Africa, Costa Rica, and ‘Europe.’ There was also a file identified as ‘Palestinian.’ Other files were identified by member name or ‘project’ name. The projects appearing to be operated for commercial purposes under front names for the Finders. There was one file entitled ‘Pentagon Break-In,’ and others referring to members operating in foreign countries”. Everything in this case points to a possible prosecution for child abuse, but the investigation was shut down for National Security reasons. Marion Pettie was the leader of “The Finders” cult. Described as a tall, well-built southern gentleman, Pettie maintained a large property in Culpepper Virginia and the locations that were raided in Washington D.C. He has admitted that his wife had worked for the CIA and that his son flew for the CIA airline “Air America”, long known for it’s drug-trafficking exploits in Southeast Asia. In an excellent interview in the Washington “City Paper”, Pettie described his role as “Game Caller”. He instructed his followers to live by the day, hour, minute. He would send them on “projects”, often to foreign countries. All the Finders men dressed like FBI agents, in conservative dark suits. Not exactly your typical hippie-cult attire. At the dawn of the computer era, Pettie recruited a talented computer engineer who trained members of The Finders in computer technology. They went on to run a project for – you guessed it, The CIA. Pettie openly admits that he ran a safe house for members of intelligence agencies, from The Office of Navel Intelligence, to the OSS, to any spook that needed a place to hang out. He claims he would “study them”. The children that were found in the park with the “well-dressed men” were returned to their mothers and the cult. The investigation was dropped. The most recent information I could research on The Finders was a blog post by a guy named Michael Phillips. Phillips claims to have met The Finders in San Francisco in the 1970’s. Phillips respects the group, and thinks they had innovative ideas. Several Finders-type comments followed his blog post, one saying that Pettie and other founding members were now dead, and thanked him for the kind words. Phillips had just proof-read a 550-page manuscript of a book on the finders by member Robert “Tobe” Terrell. Another questionable report on a New Zealand Indymedia blog said that The Finders had relocated to Taiwan. I don’t know about that. ——– We will never know the true story of “The Finders”, what they were training the children for, or the source of their wealth. The Washington “City Paper” article says that some former members were suing Pettie and the remaining estate of the cult. The articles I researched are split into at least three categories. The right-wing writers focus on Satanic ritual abuse. The left side suspects the children may have been programed to be spies or assassins. People like the blogger Phillips suggest they were just elaborate role-playing adventurers. Jorge was pitched to defect on 12/6/63, and he sent a telegram to his mother on 12/13 saying that he was "out" and with the Americans. Jorge was a CIA agent by 1968. In late July, ten Cuban exiles traveled from Miami to New Orleans and joined an anti-Castro training camp north of New Orleans. This training camp was on the land of Michael McLaney, a friend of "gamblers in Cuba", and the new arrivals at the camp had obtained some dynamite and were planning to bomb Cuban oil refineries. The leader of the dynamite procurement was Victor Espinosa Hernandez. Espinosa's group asked New Orleans DRE leader Carlos Bringuier to assist them. Bringuier had worked for some time in the same building as Banister, serving as the press and propaganda secretary of the aforementioned CRC. On July 31, the FBI swooped into a home in the New Orleans area and seized a ton of dynamite, bomb casings, napalm material and other devices. Eleven people were arrested. Bringuier escaped arrest. Why? It looks like US intelligence forces wanted a more subtle approach to test Bringuier's loyalties. Oswald Came to Center Stage After the Arms Seizure As An Asset This arms seizure by the FBI triggered Oswald to go public, who had been working with Banister doing some quiet leafleting on behalf of the FPCC. In a fully uniform world where even “culture” and media are serving the Empire and its neoliberal business interests, the New Men and the New Women are being shaped from intellectual clay, then put on massive pedestals: all of them tall and slim, all articulately and loudly regurgitating clichés, carefully avoiding real issues, intensively communicating with each other about nothing, while remaining shockingly ignorant about the world. The New Humans – they are all smiling, all very cool looking. They drive the latest cars and hold modern gadgets in their hands. They are self-confident and endlessly selfish. Many of them are on sedatives, on anti-depressants or on drugs, most of them are miserable, unsure of themselves, unhappy with their jobs, miserable with their families, unable to find or keep their second halves. The Italian and German fascists tried, desperately to create this sort of confident looking but obedient breed of super-humans. They failed. But this Empire is succeeding! The citizens of the Empire are being prevented from thinking and acting in a natural way. As a result, they are frustrated, depressed, and confused. But instead of rebelling (most of them are not capable of it, anymore), they become increasingly aggressive. While the victims of the Empire, all over the world, are being murdered, exploited and humiliated, the arrangement of the world brings actually very little joy (although many material benefits) to the citizens of the Empire – the Europeans and North Americans. RT commented: RT is a real threat to US state propaganda as it reaches Americans “in their own homes, in perfect English, better than they use on CNN.” And that is why, according to the director, Washington could get fed up and seek to silence RT by force – much like NATO did to Serbian state TV in April 1999. In turn, Kusturica predicts, Moscow would destroy CNN, which he considers the flag-bearer of pro-American propaganda: “CNN in direct transmissions assures that since the 1990s America has been leading humanitarian actions, and not wars, and that its military planes rain angels, not bombs!”” Although some of the greatest thinkers confronting the Empire — Saramago, Galeano, and Pinter — have recently passed away, there are still many of those who are managing to escape indoctrination. Some are regrouping around new non-Western television networks like TeleSUR, RT and PressTV. It is like Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, all over again. Some people, stubbornly, refuse to burn their books. Even in the West, some powerful media outlets – Dissident Voice, CounterPunch, ICH, VNN, Global Research, and others – are holding the line. They are not yet winning, far from it, but they are not dying, either! As long as the independent thought is alive, not everything is lost. “I rebel; therefore we exist”, wrote French philosopher Albert Camus. He also added: “The feeling of rebellion is born in oppression”. The Empire denies that it oppresses the world. It indoctrinates both oppressors and the oppressed, re-defining, in fact “re-branding” oppression as freedom. Those of us, who are managing to escape its indoctrination, are now rebelling. Therefore – humanity still exists. The battlefield is becoming very well defined: it is now mainly about information, and about knowledge. The deeds, the tricks, performed by the Empire are dirty, horrendous, but very transparent. They can be accepted or tolerated by billions only because of the constant repetition of the lies, and because of the twisted concepts hammered into the people’s brains through the “mainstream education”. The war for survival of humanity is already being fought. It is “The Great Humanistic War” – the war over people’s brains and hearts, not over the territory. It can be also called the “information war”, a “detox” war, or a war to bring human beings back to life from their intellectual intoxication, from their slumber and servility, a war for much better world, a war that would put knowledge above diplomas and stamps, human warmth and kindness above violence and aggression, and human beings above profits and money. Posted on Aug 19, 2015 By Sonali Kolhatkar Yemen has been the target of a brutal U.S.-backed war led by Saudi Arabia. While ordinary civilians are suffering horrific violence and starvation, there is deafening silence from the U.S. and others who claim to be defenders of human rights. The situation is so bad now that nearly every major global human rights organization has issued dire warnings of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Persian Gulf’s poorest nation. Since the Saudi regime began a bombing campaign in March, the situation has deteriorated rapidly as access to food and other aid has been stymied. In response, the United Nations in early July declared a Level 3 humanitarian emergency—the highest level possible. U.N. Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed described Yemen as "one step away from famine." But the bombing has had direct consequences, too. In late July, Human Rights Watch accused Saudi Arabia of war crimes after an airstrike on two residential buildings killed 65 civilians. Ten of the victims were children. "With no evident military target, this attack appears to be a war crime," said an HRW researcher. Amnesty International also published a scathing report with a title that says it all: "Yemen: Bloody trail of civilian death and destruction paved with evidence of war crimes." Echoing the HRW report, Amnesty researchers found "a pattern of strikes targeting heavily populated areas including civilian homes, a school, a market and a mosque. In the majority of cases no military target could be located nearby." Children are especially vulnerable. UNICEF called attention to their plight in Yemen, citing the unimaginably high number of 10 million children in need of immediate assistance. Nearly 400 children have been killed and 600 injured since March. According to the report, "Yemen is one of the most terrifying places in the world to be a child." Overall, more than 4,000 people have been killed in Yemen, more than a thousand estimated to be civilians. On Aug. 11, Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, added his voice to the chorus of warnings. "The humanitarian situation is nothing short of catastrophic," he said after a three-day visit to Yemen. "Every family in Yemen has been affected by this conflict. … Medicines can’t get in so patient care is falling apart. Fuel shortages mean equipment doesn’t work. This cannot go on. Yemen is crumbling." The same day, Teresa Sancristóval, who heads up Doctors Without Borders’ Emergency Unit, also warned of multiple crises, including a severe water shortage, lack of medicines and vaccines, and needless deaths exacerbated by the incessant bombing. She wrote, "In some moments, I felt that the conflict in Yemen is much more of a war against civilians than a war against armed groups." Ignoring the outcry from these high-profile human rights groups, Saudi Arabia just bombed yet another port, a main one used to transport aid to civilians in northern Yemen. In response, Save the Children’s Edward Santiago said, "The bombing of Hodeida port is the final straw. ... The impact of these latest air strikes will be felt most strongly by innocent children and families." Not only has the United States blessed the brutal Saudi air war on Yemen, it has taken an active role in it. Recently "the Pentagon more than doubled the number of American advisors to provide enhanced intelligence for airstrikes," the Los Angeles Times reported. This has directly contributed to a surge in airstrikes and subsequent civilian casualties. The L.A. Times rightly pointed out that Yemen’s plight has been "vastly overshadowed" by the U.S. war on Islamic State. In a nutshell, when Yemenis toppled their longtime former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, in the wake of Arab Spring revolutions such as those in Egypt and Tunisia in 2011, they ended up with Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi as their new leader. But Hadi was pushed out by a Shiite rebel group known as the Houthis, even as a low-level U.S. drone war continued against al-Qaida. Fearing Iranian aid to the Houthis along its southern border, Saudi Arabia punished Yemen with an aggressive air war actively sponsored by the Obama administration. Adding to the air war, a new, aggressive, ground-based effort began in earnest in early August. The United Arab Emirates, a small but extremely wealthy country, has deployed a major contingent of troops on the ground in Yemen. Like Saudi Arabia, the UAE is a major U.S. ally and a loyal customer of American military weaponry. A recent analysis found that U.S. arms sales to the Middle East exploded under President Obama, peaking at more than $40 billion in 2012, compared with just over $10 billion under George W. Bush. The $60.7 billion worth of weapons during Obama’s tenure went mostly to Saudi Arabia (67 percent) and the UAE (21 percent), the two main aggressors in Yemen. Among those weapons were cluster munitions, which Saudi Arabia has allegedly deployed against Yemen’s civilians. Cluster bombs are widely banned by most of the world, except for a handful of countries—including the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. They are condemned specifically for indiscriminately affecting civilian populations. But, as so many humanitarian groups are pointing out, the well-being of ordinary Yemenis seems to be a low priority for the warmongers.
