Care to elaborate?

Ever find any corroboration for the claim the US military is preparing for civil uprisings?

National Security

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither ...

Illegal government spying, indefinite detention without charge or trial and government-sponsored torture programs after 9/11 transcended the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security. There has never been a more urgent need to restore individual freedoms, due process rights and our system of checks and balances. More»

Our way forward lies in decisively turning our backs on the policies and practices that violate our greatest strength: our Constitution and the commitment it embodies to the rule of law. Liberty and security do not compete in a zero-sum game; our freedoms are the very foundation of our strength and security.

Detention: Official government reports have documented many horrific abuses inflicted on detainees in U.S. custody. The ACLU is working to stop physical and psychological abuse of detainees and the denial of their essential due process rights in prisons like Guantanamo Bay and other U.S. run detention facilities all over the world.

Discrimination: In the wake of 9/11, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security initiated sweeping programs that amount to racial profiling on a federal scale — ranging from suspicionless searches and arbitrary detentions of Arabs and Muslim Americans to counterterrorism financing and material support laws that unfairly target Muslim organizations and charities. The ACLU provides legal support to organizations and individuals who have been victims of racial and ethnic discrimination.

Dissent: Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the government has gone to extraordinary lengths to squelch dissent — from censorship and surveillance to detention, denial of due process and excessive force. The ACLU is committed to protecting Americans’ First Amendment rights. We are challenging the government’s exclusion of foreign scholars denied U.S. visas because of their political views, and we have represented individuals who have been targeted for exercising their constitutionally protected freedom to dissent.

Ideological Exclusion: The United States government is denying visas to foreign nationals whose political views the government disfavors. Once used to bar suspected Communists from entering the country, the practice of "ideological exclusion" was resurrected by the USA Patriot Act. Ideological exclusion violates Americans' First Amendment right to hear constitutionally protected speech by denying foreign scholars, artists, politicians and others entry to the U.S.

Secrecy: Federal law enforcement agencies, such as the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security, have assumed an unprecedented amount of authority to detain and spy on individuals. Yet the public has been kept unaware of how these powers have been used. Government secrecy is a concept completely at odds with the idea of government accountability. As U.S. District Court Judge Damon Keith said on the need to open up deportation hearings, "Democracies die behind closed doors."

Surveillance & Privacy: Over the last few years, the federal government has returned to the bad old days of unchecked spying on ordinary Americans, as part of a broad pattern of executive abuses that use "national security" as an excuse for encroaching on our privacy and free speech rights without adequate - or any - judicial oversight.

Torture: Government documents show that, under the Bush administration, hundreds of prisoners were tortured in U.S. custody — some even killed — in the course of interrogation. Justice Department memos reveal that the torture policies were developed at the highest levels of government. These abuses can't be swept under the rug. The ACLU is committed to restoring the rule of law because accountability for torture is a legal, political, and moral imperative.

USA PATRIOT Act: In late February 2010, Congress decided to reauthorize three provisions of the Patriot Act for one more year. The ACLU will continue to push Congress to use the upcoming debate as an opportunity to examine all our surveillance laws and amend those that have been found unconstitutional or have been abused, including changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Attorney General Guidelines.

Pentagon To Deploy 20,000 Troops In CONUS For Civil Unrest, Possible Threats To Populace

http://theintelhub.com/2011/07/24/20000-troops-to-deploy-in-conus-for-civil-unrest-possible-threats/

The American Civil Liberties Union and the libertarian Cato Institute are troubled by what they consider an expansion of executive authority.

Domestic emergency deployment may be “just the first example of a series of expansions in presidential and military authority,” or even an increase in domestic surveillance, said Anna Christensen of the ACLU’s National Security Project. And Cato Vice President Gene Healy warned of “a creeping militarization” of homeland security.

“There’s a notion that whenever there’s an important problem, that the thing to do is to call in the boys in green,” Healy said, “and that’s at odds with our long-standing tradition of being wary of the use of standing armies to keep the peace.”

http://www.pakalertpress.com/2012/08/09/army-report-details-how-military-can-be-used-against-tea-party-right-wingers-american-citizens/

A theoretical report about the future use of the military as a police force within the United States is causing a firestorm of controversy. The report, Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A “Vision” of the Future, was written by a retired Army Colonel and describes how future warfare will be conducted on American soil. The report depicts a scenario where the U.S. Military will have to use its power against the American public.

The study begins by laying out how the U.S. Army’s Operating Concept 2016-2028 will include military operations throughout the United States. The outrageous report goes on to describe a theoretical situation where the U.S. Army is sent in to a city that has been taken over by Tea Party “insurrectionists”.

The report starts in an eerie almost prophetic tone and then goes on to demonize tea party members and “immigrant-bashing by right-wing demagogues”…

“The Great Recession of the early twenty-first century lasts far longer than anyone anticipated. After a change in control of the White House and Congress in 2012, the governing party cuts off all funding that had been dedicated to boosting the economy or toward relief…” “…. By 2016, the economy shows signs of reawakening, but the middle and lower-middle classes have yet to experience much in the way of job growth or pay raises. Unemployment continues to hover perilously close to double digits, small businesses cannot meet bankers’ terms to borrow money, and taxes on the middle class remain relatively high. A high-profile and vocal minority has directed the public’s fear and frustration at nonwhites

and immigrants. After almost ten years of race-baiting and immigrant-bashing by right-wing demagogues, nearly one in five Americans reports being vehemently opposed to immigration, legal or illegal, and even U.S.-born nonwhites have become occasional targets for mobs of angry whites.”

After demonizing what they call “right-wing demagogues” and “mobs of angry whites” the report goes on to say:

“In May 2016 an extremist militia motivated by the goals of the “tea party” movement takes over the government of Darlington, South Carolina…. The Department of Homeland Security responds to the governor’s request by asking for defense support to civil law enforcement. After the Department of Justice states that the conditions in Darlington and surrounding areas meet the conditions necessary to invoke the Insurrection Act, the President invokes it.”

The shocking report goes into great detail as to how the U.S. Military could be used to stop a “Tea Party Movement.” What’s even more disturbing is the fact that the retired U.S. Army colonel who wrote the report now teaches modern warfare to soldiers at the University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies at Fort Leavenworth. This wackjob, who is making the case for using the military on its own people, is actually teaching our soldiers and indoctrinating them with this vicious hate filled garbage.

This study comes at a time when the U.S. Military has been seen ramping up its efforts to train here on American Soil. We have detailed numerous occasions where the Military has been asked to take part in urban warfare training on the streets of Chicago, Miami, New Jersey, Tampa, and Los Angeles. It also follows our report on the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to prepare for a civil uprising and the Obama Administrations numerous unconstitutional executive orders that seem to be making way for marital law.

With the publication of this article, it’s clear that many in the government now consider the average American Citizen to be a threat. Why else would they allow this material to be offered as a training tool to military personnel? Why else would they be pushing the narrative that tea party groups are filled with Anti-American “racist” “extremist right wingers?”

An Attack on Posse Comitatus?

By Anna Christensen, National Security Project at 1:11pm

On Tuesday, the ACLU filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act with the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security, demanding an explanation for the Army's decision to station an active-duty military unit inside the United States. This development represents the first-ever permanent deployment of an active-duty unit within the country. The deployment threatens a significant erosion of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 and sparks renewed concerns about the Defense Department's increasing role in domestic surveillance. It raises critical questions, as the ACLU explained, "about the longstanding separation between civilian and military government within the United States — a separation that dates to the Nation's founding."

In the request, the ACLU asked the government to disclose any records relating to its decision to deploy the unit, as well as documents concerning the its purpose, including "contemplated functions; duties; surveillance activities; and relationship to existing civilian agencies or personnel or the National Guard." The release of these records, the ACLU believes, will allow the public to reach an informed conclusion as to whether the deployment represents an erosion of our rights and a violation of federal law.

Here's what we do know: The program, entitled the Chemical, Biological, Radiological/Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) Consequence Management Response Force, or CCMRF (pronounced, strangely enough, "sea-smurf"), will be stationed for one year in Fort Stewart, Ga., with the expectation — according to Army Times — that another active-duty brigade will then take over, and that the deployment will be permanent. The first unit to be deployed will be the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st BCT, or "First Raiders", which spent 35 of the last 60 months "in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle" (again, the Army Times' characterization). The unit's explicit mission will be to provide support for civilian law-enforcement branches like local police and rescue personnel: it may be called upon in situations involving civil unrest, crowd control, or catastrophes like chemical, biological, or nuclear attack, and it will be trained in skills like search and rescue and crowd control.

But we also know that the CCMRF deployment jeopardizes the Posse Comitatus Act, a cornerstone of America's democratic society. Enacted after the end of Reconstruction (and the domestic military occupation that went along with it), the Act prevents the government from using the military as a tool for law enforcement, except in situations of explicit national emergency based on express authorization from Congress (the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is one example). Posse Comitatus embodies and preserves the separation between civilian and military government crucial to the protection of civil liberties and the avoidance of martial law.

The implementation of the CCMRF program should therefore be extremely troubling to all Americans concerned about their civil liberties. After Hurricane Katrina, the Bush administration began to work for an elimination of the most important elements of the Posse Comitatus Act, eventually helping pass legislation that permitted the President to authorize domestic military deployment in cases of "natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition" (this "other condition" was not limited in any way by the text of the law). Although that amendment was repealed in 2008, it nonetheless signaled a significant departure from the Posse Comitatus Act, and a substantial broadening of executive power. It stands to reason, then, that the deployment of CCMRF may be just the first example of a series of expansions in presidential and military authority.

The deployment of an active unit within the United States is also troubling given recent evidence of the Defense Department's involvement in warrantless surveillance. The expansion of the military's role in domestic law enforcement may pave the way for a further increase in domestic surveillance activities in which the government oversteps its legal authority by listening to the private communications of ordinary Americans.

Not to mention that it makes no sense for an already over-taxed military to expand its operations to responsibilities normally reserved for civilian law enforcement. A 2003 General Accounting Office study found that domestic security missions heavily strain our military, which is already stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan, and severely restrict its ability to effectively combat real threats abroad. As Gene Healy, vice-president of the Cato Institute has observed, the military "is not a Swiss army knife"; it cannot be expected to return from Iraq and immediately turn to natural disaster response efforts. And, according to Army Times, the domestic mission "will take place during the so-called dwell time a unit gets to reset and regenerate after a deployment" — that is, instead of relaxing and visiting their loved ones during their much-deserved time off, our soldiers may now be spending their vacation conducting "crowd control" stateside.

In an era where many argue that international efforts should take a back seat to domestic concerns, there may be merit behind the theory of focusing our defense efforts on the homeland; but the deployment of an active-duty unit on our soil raises important questions that need to be addressed — not secretly behind closed doors, but openly by the American people. We have a right to know why the government has made the unprecedented decision to implement the CCMRF program, and the true threat it poses to our civil liberties.

DHS Preparing for Civil War In US?

According to Doug Hagmann , private investigator, his high-level source at DHS confirmed that the agency is preparing for “massive civil war” in the US.

Hagmann says: “We have problems . . . The federal government is preparing for civil uprising. . . so every time you hear about troop movements, every time you hear about movements of military equipment, the militarization of the police, the buying of the ammunition, all of this is . . . they (DHS) are preparing for a massive uprising.”

He continues: “It’s going to get so much worse toward the election, and I’m not even sure we’re going to have an election in this country. It’s going to be that bad, and this, as well, is coming from my sources. But one source in particular said, ‘look, you don’t understand how bad it is.’ This stuff is real; these people, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), they are ready to fight the American people.”

Hagmann confirmed that the cause of the national emergency would be centered on the US dollar. Because hyperinflation is coming because of the “un-sustainability of the American dollar” money will be worthless which will trigger massive panic due to a complete economic collapse.

Back in March, Obama signed executive order National Defense Resources Preparedness ( EO 13603) which gives the federal government permission to seize all property in the interests of national security “in peacetime and in times of national emergency.” Neither of those terms was defined, leaving the door open to situational interpretation.

Obama’s EO was nearly a copy of the Defense Production Act of 1950 under FEMA. This Act says all means of human survival are the President’s to confiscate and control at his discretion.

The NDAA denies American citizens inherent Constitutional and human rights in the event of a national emergency. There is no mention of Congress’ role of authority in it, leaving speculations as to the President’s plan for the future of our Congressional branch of government.

All allocation of resources to the government will be “as needed” to defend the nation. This ambiguous term could allow federal and military agencies to view the private property of civilians as theirs which could force an incident or create a situation.

Setting this EO in place, prior to these manifestations of evidence of a silent martial law being enacted domestically; this is the nail on the coffin of our Constitutional liberties. Now we are witnessing the military on our streets. DHS is acquiring SWAT and riot gear and massive amounts of ammunition .

The evidence of their next step is becoming clear.

Why is the Department of Homeland Security buying so many bullets?

Posted on February 15, 2013 by Paraclete

Ammunition-300x169.jpgThis should be good for a laugh.

Fox News – by Associated Press

Online rumors about a big government munitions purchase are true, sort of.

The Homeland Security Department wants to buy more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition in the next four or five years. It says it needs them — roughly the equivalent of five bullets for every person in the United States — for law enforcement agents in training and on duty.

Published federal notices about the ammo buy have agitated conspiracy theorists since the fall. That’s when conservative radio host Alex Jones spoke of an “arms race against the American people” and said the government was “gearing up for total collapse, they’re gearing up for huge wars.”

The government’s explanation is much less sinister.

Federal solicitations to buy the bullets are known as “strategic sourcing contracts,” which help the government get a low price for a big purchase, says Peggy Dixon, spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga . The training center and others like it run by the Homeland Security Department use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises.

Dixon said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department’s umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department’s training center last year.

The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government’s second largest criminal investigative agency.

ICE’s ammunition requests in the last year included:

–450 million rounds of .40-caliber duty ammunition

–40 million rounds of rifle ammunition a year for as many as five years, for a total bullet-buy of 200 million rounds

–176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract

–25,000 blank rounds

The Homeland Security ammo buy is not the first time the government’s bullets purchases have sparked concerns on the Internet. The same thing happened last year when the Social Security Administration posted a notice that it was buying 174,000 hollow point bullets.

Jonathan L. Lasher, the agency’s assistant inspector general for external relations, said those bullets were for the Social Security inspector general’s office, which has about 295 agents who investigate Social Security fraud and other crimes.

Jones the talk-show host did not immediately respond to requests for comment. (RED GAAL)

An 'Informal Arrangement' to Not Report the News

By Peter Hart19 Comments

drone_6701-300x156.jpgToday the Washington Post (2/6/13) reported some news that it's known for years, but had decided not tell us until now: The CIA has a drone base in Saudi Arabia.

Their rationale for withholding this information was simple: The government didn't want them to. And from what the Post is telling us today, they weren't the only ones.

After explaining that Anwar al-Awlaki was killed by an attack "carried out in part by CIA drones flown from a secret base in Saudi Arabia," the paper explains:

The
Washington Post
had refrained from disclosing the location at the request of the administration, which cited concern that exposing the facility would undermine operations against an Al-Qaeda affiliate regarded as the network's most potent threat to the United States, as well as potentially damage counterterrorism collaboration with Saudi Arabia.

So why did the Post finally report this news today?

The
Post
learned Tuesday night that another news organization was planning to reveal the location of the base, effectively ending an informal arrangement among several news organizations that had been aware of the location for more than a year.

So there was an "informal arrangement among several news organizations" not to report important news because the government felt that it could make things difficult for them.

It would appear that "another news organization" is the New York Times, which reported today:

The first strike in Yemen ordered by the Obama administration, in December 2009, was by all accounts a disaster. American cruise missiles carrying cluster munitions killed dozens of civilians, including many women and children. Another strike, six months later, killed a popular deputy governor, inciting angry demonstrations and an attack that shut down a critical oil pipeline.

Not long afterward, the CIA began quietly building a drone base in Saudi Arabia to carry out strikes in Yemen. American officials said that the first time the CIA used the Saudi base was to kill Mr. Awlaki in September 2011.

The fact that the Post was keeping something secret was known in 2011, as FAIR noted (FAIR Blog, 7/27/11), quoting the paper:

The agency is building a desert airstrip so that it can begin flying armed drones over Yemen. The facility, which is scheduled to be completed in September, is designed to shield the CIA's aircraft, and their sophisticated surveillance equipment, from observers at busier regional military hubs such as Djibouti, where the JSOC drones are based.

The
Washington Post
is withholding the specific location of the CIA facility at the administration's request.

As FAIR also pointed out then, this was reminiscent of another decision by the Post to withhold news. In 2005, the paper delivered an explosive story about "black sites" where CIA was interrogating suspects–places where, in many cases, the agency could reasonably expect the prisoners to be tortured. The Post's valuable expose was undercut by its decision not to name the countries involved. As the paper explained:

The
Washington Post
is not publishing the names of the Eastern European countries involved in the covert program, at the request of senior U.S. officials. They argued that the disclosure might disrupt counterterrorism efforts in those countries and elsewhere and could make them targets of possible terrorist retaliation.

This week, a new report from the Open Society Institute documented that more than 50 countries were involved in the CIA "extraordinary rendition" program. It's certainly possible that some countries might have stopped helping the U.S. government torture people if it had been made known that they were doing so.

Likewise, it's possible that Saudi Arabia will stop allowing the CIA to use its territory to conduct a secret drone war against a third country now that the secret is out. But the possibility that news might affect the world is not a reason to stop doing journalism. Indeed, it's the best reason to do journalism.

UPDATE: The Times' public editor Margaret Sullivan has weighed in on her blog (2/6/13), and what's most notable is the opinion of the paper's managing editor Dean Baquet, since it basically confirms the point we were making above:

The government's rationale for asking that the location be withheld was this: Revealing it might jeopardize the existence of the base and harm counterterrorism efforts. "The Saudis might shut it down because the citizenry would be very upset," he said.

Mr. Baquet added, "We have to balance that concern with reporting the news."

So the Times believes that it should refrain from reporting news that people in Saudi Arabia might object to–especially if it wound up complicating our government's plans to launch military attacks from their country.

Examples of media censorship and public opinion manipulation

http://www.ai.rug.nl...nsored2011.html

Geopolitics and the underreported stories in 2010

The underreported stories of 2010 all the previous years are highly biased towards the censorship of geopolitically relavant events and developments. The censored stories of 2010 are outlined below. These stories center around a relatively small number of themes:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Theme Story Number Govenment unaccountability and war crimes 2 9 13 14 15 24 Eroding civil liberties 3 4 9 13 14 15 20 22 24 25 Perpetuation of Wars 2 9 10 13 23 Security state build-up 3 4 9 14 15 22 Militarizing the economy 10 13 14 Resource "wars" 7 8 9 14 18 Undeclared wars 5 7 8 9 18 Corporate unaccountability and fraud 11 15 19 Corporate profiteering 5 6 8 11 15 17 18 Cover-up of environmental disasters 2 15 17 18 21

These themes make clear that not just some embarassing stories are censored. Censored stories are typically the stories with a strong geopolitical component because they are about war (declared and undeclared), unaccountability and cover-ups involving internationally active politicians and corporations, and the gradual eroding of individual liberties all over the world.

Pentagon Deploying 20000 Troops In US To Prepare For Economic Collpase Civil Unrest

I no longer live in the US but I've visited many times since 9/11. In November 2001 I saw troops patrolling lower Manhattan which I found disturbing but it's been over 10 years since I've seen anything like that since 2002 when visiting NYC, Chicago and southern Florida. So where are these supposed 20,000 troops. If they are simply guarding federal facilities I don't really see that as a big deal.

As for the Hart article I don't really have a problem with the media not disclosing the exact location of the drone base for a year. Their not reporting the countries involved in 'extraordinary rendition' is more distrubing but the MSM has continually reported stories the USG wanted to keep secret. Thouh far from perfect the situation is far better than in countries whose regimes you seem to support.
