Philip Franklin was born in New York City, where he attended public schools including Queens College and City College of the City University of New York. He earned an MA in English as a Second Language from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a former doctoral candidate there in Applied Linguistics. For his research, he was awarded a University Graduate Fellowship in 1980. He has taught ESL, administered ESL programs, and trained ESL teachers in the USA, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
