American Liberty League

The American Liberty League was a U.S. organization formed in 1934 by conservative Democrats such as Al Smith (the 1928 Democratic nominee), Jouett Shouse (former high party official and U.S. Representative), and John Jacob Raskob (former Democratic national chairman and the foremost opponent of prohibition), Dean Acheson (future Secretary of State under Harry Truman), along with many industrialists, notably members of the Dupont family. In their opinion, the Roosevelt administration was leading the U.S. toward socialism, bankruptcy and dictatorship.

In the year of its founding in 1934, the League was implicated in the Business Plot to overthrow FDR in secret (but leaked) congressional testimony by General Smedley Butler. According to Butler's testimony, the League was founded intentionally as a para-military coup vehicle, the 'American version' of the 1930's French fascist Croix de Feu. The final McCormack-Dickstein Committee report supported Butler's allegations on the existence of the plot, but no prosecutions or further investigations followed, and the matter was mostly forgotten.(Spivak, Seldes, Archer)

The League spent between half a million and 1.5 million dollars in promotional campaigns; its funding came mostly from the DuPont family, as well as leaders of U.S. Steel, General Motors, Standard Oil, Chase National Bank, and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. It reached over 125,000 members and supported the Republicans in 1936.

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested.

As a four-term Governor of New York and 1928 Democratic presidential nominee, Alfred E. Smith was celebrated as an honest politician in a corrupt milieu. But a chapter deleted from the recently published autobiography of Thomas L. Chadbourne, a wheeling-dealing corporation lawyer, claims that during the 1920s Chadbourne gave Smith cash and stock options worth $400,000. The motive was high-minded: the payments were designed to augment Smith's $10,000-a-year Governor's salary so the Happy Warrior could live "without bread-and- butter worries." Chadbourne, who died in 1938, admits he was miffed when Smith later refused to support a subway-fare increase, which would have hugely added to the value of Chadbourne's mass-transit stock.

When Chadbourne's memoirs were acquired by New York University, the New York firm of Chadbourne, Parke, Whiteside & Wolff successfully requested that the Smith chapter be dropped from publication. A spokesman told the New York Times that the firm merely wanted to avoid libeling anyone, although dead people cannot be libeled. Still, the reputations of the dead, as of the living, can be tainted by unsavory lore.

Thomas Lincoln Chadbourne (1871-1938)

Chadbourne is known to have donated at least $6,250 to the American Liberty League.

He began practicing law in 1893 and by 1903, upon moving to New York, he became one the country’s top business lawyers. He was hired by U.S. Steel in 1907. In 1921, during its first year, Chadbourne joined the Council on Foreign Relations, an elitist think-tank of wealthy Americans that still wields great influence over government policies. In the 1920s, Chadbourne masterminded a merger of New York City’s subway, train and streetcar firms and became the City’s “traction Czar.” During the 1930s, public transit systems in 45 U.S. cities, starting in Manhattan, were acquired by National City Lines (NCL), a consortium of General Motors, Firestone Tires, Mack Truck and Standard Oil. The NCL then destroyed these mass transit systems in order to force public reliance on cars. Chadbourne was on the board of International Motors (now Mack Truck) and has represented General Motors.

Chadbourne also successfully represented Charles Mitchell (President of Rockefeller’s National City Bank of New York), when he was indicted for suspicious financial transactions during the 1929 stock market crash. Mitchell later sat on the Board of American I.G. Farben, a Nazi holding company. Although three Germans on this board were convicted for “crimes against humanity,” Mitchell and four fellow-American board members were never tried: Edsel Ford (president, Ford Motors), Walter Teagle (president, Standard Oil), Paul Warburg (chairman, Federal Reserve Bank) and Herman Metz (director, Bank of Manhattan).

In 1931, as counsel for giant sugar firms, Chadbourne brokered a seven-nation agreement to limit sugar production. By then a millionaire, his Wall Street firm employed 60 attorneys and assisted 150 of America’s biggest corporations. During the Depression, he sat on many boards, including Wright Aeronautical (now General Electric), Otis Elevator & Manufacturers Trust (now part of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank). Some of his earliest clients are still with the company, including North American Aviation (now Rockwell Automation) and Adams Express (investment).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.chadbourne.com/about/s_Chadbourne.html

Chadbourne had many accomplishments during his career. Among his most significant were those in the transportation industry in New York City and the sugar industry. As to the latter, as counsel for the larger sugar producers, he authored and negotiated a seven-nation plan for limiting the world production of sugar that was adopted by the International Sugar Conference at Brussels in the spring of 1931. Fortune magazine at the time called it "one of the greatest ventures ever undertaken in business diplomacy" and France made him an officer of the Legion of Honor for his efforts.

Chadbourne’s involvement with transportation in New York City was significant and occurred at a time in the 1920s when there was controversy regarding public versus private ownership of mass transit. At that time, all of the subway and bus lines were privately owned. The city, while investing in private companies, was also in the process of building the Independent Subway Line. The private owners were seeking a unified system with an increase in the five-cent fare, as they claimed they were not making a profit. It would be many years before the issues were resolved, but Chadbourne played a dominant role.

The December 6, 1926 edition of the New York American newspaper demonstrates just how dominant Chadbourne’s role was. The banner headline that day reads "Chadbourne Controls N.Y. Transit." (In contrast, a small squib lower down on the front page announces "Claude Monet, Artist, Dead.") The article begins: "Thomas L. Chadbourne and his intimate associates of the B.M.T. have finally gained control of the I.R.T. and the Third Avenue Railway Company. Through legal and other connections Mr. Chadbourne is able to have an important voice in the affairs of the Fifth Avenue Coach Company. He and his associates are planning a huge merger or consolidation by means of a holding company of all New York’s traction facilities, including subways, elevated lines and virtually all the surface lines…" The article continues in part as follows: "The New York American, after a painstaking investigation, is able to state unequivocally that today Thomas L. Chadbourne and powerful interests associated with him now control virtually all traction facilities in the City…. Chadbourne, in a word, has become New York City’s traction Czar."

By the 1930s, Chadbourne was a self-made millionaire who had developed his solo law practice into a leading Wall Street firm of approximately 60 attorneys in an array of different legal practices. He was counsel to more than 150 of the largest corporations in the country, and served as chairman or director of the Wright Aeronautical Corporation, Mack Trucks Incorporated, the Otis Elevator Company and the Manufacturers Trust Company, among other notable companies. Having weathered the Great Depression, brokered deals in a variety of industries, and established a growing law firm that would continue to reflect his belief in innovative dealmaking and topnotch counsel, Thomas Chadbourne died in 1938.

A prominent New York lawyer gave Alfred E. Smith more than $400,000 in cash and stock options while Smith was Governor of New York in the 1920's, according to a chapter dropped from the lawyer's recently published autobiography. The lawyer, Thomas L. Chadbourne, a millionaire active in Democratic Party...

Excellent reading in regards to how the "Sugar Cartel" came to exist under the leadership of Thomas L. Chadbourne.

Of particular note, one will see that at the time, Peru was a sugar exporting country of some importance as well.

A search of the document will also bring out the "Rionda" associations as well as numerous references to discussions between the "Chadbourne Committee" and Aurelio Portuondo of Cuba.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the "SUGAR" topic:

Which also brings around to: Aurelio Portuondo was the Cuban Trading Company's primary liaison with the Cuban government. He was also an important delegate to both the U.S.-Cuban and international negotiations to establish bilateral and multilateral sugar stabilization agreements. Portuondo played an important part in the creation of the U.S.-Cuban Reciprocity Treaty of 1934. The treaty negotiations in Washington were played out against a backdrop of revolution and U.S. intervention in Cuba which are described in vivid detail in Portuondo's correspondence.

Mr. Portuondo also being familiar with the Cuban Transportation System:

Aurelio Ballenilla Portuondo. Como pasar una estancia agradable en Santiago de Cuba. Santiago de Cuba, 1950. Guidebook notes the five remaining tram routes.

What happened to the system after Havana Electric Railway was sold to Autobuses Modernos in 1950? The only thing certain is that the Santiago tramway closed on 26 January 1952, three months before the system in the capital.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

June 23, 1950: Havana Electric Railway (HER) is acquired by the William D. Pawley Company, "Autobuses Modernos S. A."

Thereafter, an immediate transition to diesel driven buses as the transit system for Havana begins.

Glad that those who recognize "where to look", recognize the direction in which I often meander.

There is considerable more to the story of the "big bucks" when one then follows from the American Liberty League to the AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION which includes the really BIG money players and their investments in the Soviet Union.

And just so that one knows most, the individual who lived in Miami, FL and rode the bus to Mexico with LHO and reported it to the FBI, also worked for a South American subsidary of the good ole STANDARD OIL group.

One just might also want to check into the background of DeMohrenschildt's family business in the Soviet Union as well.

Tom

P.S. Still have not forgotten the Playboy Club Manager who Jack Ruby called. Will eventually get around to "re-digging" through the boxes and send the name.

Wish that I had kept my old "key card", as they are now considered as valuable "collectibles".

Hey Purv,

I sent the last picture I had of me with the N.O. Club's G.M. to Dawn this past Christmas, in case you ever want her to scan it to you. You can P.M. her for it whenever you're interested.

Terry; (just for you)

Since I pushed everything aside to get to the computer, may as well share this with you as well.

The proper means by which to endure oneself with J. Edgar Hoover, was to make certain that one did not forget ANY opportunity to give him a gift. Which of course was fully expected to be an expensive gift.

Thus, those who catered his favor, never missed an opportunity, be it his birthday; christmas; founding of the FBI; anniversary at the FBI; or whatever, to give JEH a special/expensive/& frequently unique gift.

Being the "miser" that he was, JEH was never known to purchase or pay for anything.

Thus, one can only imagine exactly how JEH acquired 100 shares of Creole Petroleum Company Stock, as well as 53 shares of Standard Oil of California and 52 shares of Standard Oil of New Jersey.

Hello Thomas, There is Rockefeller and then there is Rockefeller. National City Bank (which was Lansky's banker for most of his Cuban interests) was controlled PRE-summer-1963 by the Stillman Rockefeller (a more Skull & Bones connected family than the Regular Rockefellers) ,Empire Trust (Lehman/Loeb ,Khun),and the Regular Rockefellers. Now the Stillman and Regular Rockefellers did work together (as in FreePort Sulfur) ,Ive noted the Summer-63 increase in investment by the Regular Rockefellers (for control of NCB),as assassinated related. The increase in Regular Rockefeller investment was part of a tranfer to Mob sources of financial backing. Further Empire trust was were the elite and mob meet. Another increase in financial backing of the mob by the elites was the teamster loan to the Murchison-Rockefeller land deal being supported by Empire Trust (Empire Trusts investment helped the mob loan). Post assasination elites helped also..Jack Crichton (Empire Trust board) was part of the coverup. The post assassination /post Brizilian April 64 Coup started a marked increase in investments there by the Regular Rockefellers. David Rockefeller (regular Rockefeller) had great investment plans for SE Asia in pre and especially post assassination... I hope this helps. sg
