The model serves as a daily reminder of all that was lost five years ago on September 11, 2001, and of what could happen again tomorrow. As the assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, Townsend spends more time than perhaps any other U.S. official assessing the U.S.-led global war on terrorism. Recently, she spoke with National Journal staff correspondent James Kitfield.
