From the age of 14, I had two ambitions: one was to go into the army and the other to compete in the Olympics.

The first Olympics I remember were the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and watching the achievement of Sebastian Coe there really inspired me. He had a lovely running style and was very talented, of course, but underneath that he had a really aggressive side: he was an extraordinary determined runner and he really wanted to win. Tactically, he was brilliant too.

After Coe won the 1500m, what sticks in my memory was his pure delight and joy. There’s a photograph of him and his arms in the air and his mouth wide open. That’s the passion I have when I race, and liked him showing true passion for our sport.
