  1. AT LEAST two of Australia's largest corporate bookmakers are refusing to pay out on tens of thousands of bets laid on Barack Obama's victory - on the grounds that he may be killed before he is inaugurated.

An angry punter contacted the Herald saying he was told by a senior Sportsbet bookie that the company would not pay out until the inauguration in January in case the president-elect was shot before he took office.

  2. There is also the realization of the DOD and Defense Contractors that there will be a decades-long reallignment of the defense and security forces. I would venture to bet that you can deploy most of the high tech/big budget nuke hardware, especially subs/bombers and look for more emphasis in small battlefield combat tech. Billions will be switched from nukes to small/medium arms immediately, and contracts over the long haul will deemphasize nukes, and they should be eventually eleminated all togther. There won't be a reduction in the total number of dollars given to the military, it will be just realligned in different areas.

I don't quite agree here, Bill. Nukes themselves are a very cheap weapon, a very cheap deterrent. They will always form part of US strategy. Vessels like a OHIO-class SSBN might seem expensive, but they are relatively long lived and frighten the hell out of a potential enemy. They are more flexible than silo based missiles, and far less vulnerable than a bomber force. The actual weapon is dirt cheap in comparison.

You are quite right, however, that small battlefield technology is getting increased emphasis.

  4. Okay Len, it's just that I did not read it that way.

By the way, it should be noted that - as far as myself and the company I keep is concerned - the Deep Politics forum commenced the sniping.

The Colby faction just drove people away. For me the last straw, of many, was the insult by Andy Walker. He took a notice all of a sudden and began monitering and responding to posts. This on top of Evan Burton ....who made bad calls on a regular basis.

Have you noticed that Burton has abandoned ship on the Simkin boat? Has originated no messages in more than a month. I guess his employers considered his mission complete. Same with all the others except Brazil and Miller.

If Paraguay wasn't landlocked, I'd be wondering if Commander Burton was preparing to sail the Bush family to their 100,000-acre South American bolthole.

For the record, I'm very sad that the likes of Burton and "Colby/Brazil" were allowed to destroy important threads on the Education Forum: it didn't have to be that way.

This was all said before I even knew the existence of their forum. That's all I have to say of their forum. Their hypocrisy has been well noted.

  5. Hi Craig,

Despite the polls, the majority of the media and public opinion (especially outside of the USA and including Russia) that Obama is near a 'lock' bar a catastrophe - you are unwilling to accept that and mock others who are merely stating the obvious.

I don’t know about your interpretations on 'critical thinking', but in Ireland we call your thinking 'Asal Logic'. It appears there are enough people on this forum pointing this out to you, so I personally will refrain from doing so again.

But every cloud has a silver lining, so take comfort in the fact that not only do you impress some of us with your resolve, but if by chance McCain does win, you were among the minority of people in the world (those countries following or aware in some degree of the US election) who predicted it. Who knows, maybe in four years time CNN will ask your permission to broadcast the 'Craig Lamson Poll of Polls' - Just a thought.

    Steve

Although I disagree with Craig's assessment, I have to defend his post. As I pointed out in a post, there was an instance where all the polls pointed one way and the actual winner was another (I am unsure if there is any claim of vote rigging, but I do not think so). Now, I do not think this will be the case; I believe Bush has turned the majority of people towards a democrat; I think the time has finally come for America to choose a black President; I think that the McCain / Palin ticket - although having a number of pluses - has more negatives, and the the negatives on the McCain side outweigh the negatives on the Obama / Biden side. Just my opinion though, and as I said, I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to US politics.

  6. Off topic - for which I apologise - but it reminds me of one of the mysteries we discuss on a science forum: why does the Moon "look" bigger when close to the horizon? If you measure the size of the Moon, you'll find it is about the same... but to most people it appears bigger.

We've tried to come up with a reason this is, and there are a few theories... but we can't point to one and say THIS is why. Generally we agree it involves the ability to compare the apparent size of the Moon with familiar objects (houses, trees, mountains, etc) when near the horizon... but it's not anything we can provide objective evidence for.

  7. Len,

A correction to your post: I have never applied to join the Deep Politics forum. Even as a mere member, subject to the whims and judgments of their own moderators, they fear open debate and thus I believe they would not allow me to join there - even though they have ability to censor me at will. I believe it would too openly display their hypocrisy.

  8. In closing, I might note that as a matter of policy the Deep Politics Forum will not publish pseudonymous posts. On this basis alone, "Ashton Gray" is disqualified from membership.

And they don't even know their own rules:

    7. You have the ability, as you register, to choose your username. We strongly discourage the use of pseudonyms, aliases, and other names chosen to hide your identity. Use of a pseudonym or alias must be approved by forum owners.

    http://www.deeppoliticsforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58

So you have the ability to choose a username, an alias is discouraged and must be approved, and as a matter of policy will not be approved. What hypocrites.

  9. It gives me no pleasure to note that you have echoed the sentiments of the likes of "Colby," Burton, and "Gray."

I feel honoured to be rejected by the likes of Mr Drago, and chuffed to be in the company of Len and Ashton.

"No CIA types allowed" = If you disagree, you're not wanted here.

It's not the Deep Politics Forum, it's the Deep S**t Forum.

  10. I don't know didley about the ins and outs of the US political system, but if Obama loses the elections I'll be in the group that is calling fraud.

    Why?

The polls indicate massive support for him, and every US citizen I have asked (about 15) have said they are going to vote for him.

If nothing happens to change the situation (e.g. no scandal about him, no political blunder, etc) then McCain doesn't have a chance.

Well, I guess you believe the polls then. Have you actually studied the polls or are you taking them at face value? Doing so without knowing the internals of the polls is not a good thing to do.

Polls have been wrong in a HUGE way for the most part in the US the last few elections. This one will be no exception.

Oh, I know they can be.... I am reminded of Truman's win in 1948 against all odds. Still, I just don't see McCain winning.... and if he does, I'll be suspect of the result. Of course I'll need proof of rigging, and not just my own opinion.
