  4. From Bloomberg Today column published today: What’s On Our Bookshelf Parmy Olson interviewed Laurent Richard and Sandrine Rigaud, co-authors of the new book Pegasus: How a Spy in Your Pocket Threatens the End of Privacy, Dignity, and Democracy. The book tells the story of Pegasus, a malicious spyware developed by an Israeli company, NSO Group, that allowed governments around the world to hack into people's phones without their knowledge. Richard and Rigaud led the team of investigative journalists that uncovered the existence of Pegasus. We asked them for additional recommendations for readers interested in cyber-surveillance, leaks and espionage: Permanent Record, by Edward Snowden. “Will help you understand not only the scale of the US's PRISM surveillance program but also the bravery of Snowden, who took a lot of risks to reveal it.” The Panama Papers, by Bastian Obermayer and Frederik Obermaier. “Like our book, it's a story of a leak and of a collaboration that had a huge impact worldwide.” Countdown to Zero Day, by Kim Zetter. “A very interesting look at the industry — people on the dark web, hackers, brokers — behind cybersurveillance.”

  8. Lee Shepherd posted this on Facebook today. He added to his posting that this came out of the Bobby Baker scandal. Within months of taking office, President Kennedy appointed his friend Grant Stockdale ambassador to Ireland. Two years later, Stockdale, an administrative assistant to Senator George Smathers, became a major stock holder of Serv-U Corporation that had expanded into some major land holdings in Florida. Through these contacts, Stockdale was pulled into the inner circle of individuals surrounding JFK’s assassination. On November 26, 1963, Stockdale suddenly flew to Washington DC and talked secretly with Robert and Edward Kennedy. It is not known what he conveyed to them, but upon his return he told several of his friends, "The world is closing in." On December 1, Stockdale spoke to his attorney, William S. Frates: “He started talking. It didn't make much sense.” Frates recalled, “He said something about 'those guys' trying to get him. Then about the [Kennedy] assassination...he knew and was closely associated with almost all of the top figures in the cabal.” The next day the forty-eight-year-old Stockdale either “fell to his death,” or was shoved from the fourteenth floor (technically the 13th) of the DuPont building in downtown Miami. He did not leave a suicide note All reactions: 5Keven Hofeling, Kelly Houckham and 3 others

  14. From the lead New York Times article just now that says the issue is so complicated in public opinion that prosecution of Trump is not likely. WASHINGTON — F.B.I. agents are rummaging through President Biden’s private home. Republicans are on the attack. Democrats are reluctant to defend him. Lawyers are being hired. Witnesses are being interviewed. The press secretary is being pelted with questions she cannot or will not answer. But amid the familiar soundtrack of scandal in Washington, the most significant cost to the president may be the opportunity cost: Even if nothing comes of the new special counsel investigation into his team’s mishandling of classified documents, politically it has effectively let former President Donald J. Trump off the hook for hoarding secret papers.
