The CIA's SAS branch was well aware of Azcue's pending departure date of 10/4/63. Win Scott was putting on pressure to recruit him prior to this date. Scott tasked Tony Sforza to have his former Stay Behind asset AMOT-106 (Jose Casas) to pitch his friend Azcue. They didn't care if he defected to the US or defect in place in Havana. Casas made his pitch. The Op to recruit Azcue began as early as January 1963.

As every year, on April 17 at five o'clock in the afternoon, the names of 104 heroes of the 2506th Assault Brigade who died trying to free Cuba from communism are read. You always answer "present" when you hear the name of each brigade member in front of the Assault Brigade Monument 2506 This monument has a torch with a perpetual flame and is located at SW 8th Street and 13th Avenue in Miami.

President John F. Kennedy gave the order to reduce the first attack on Cuba from 16 B-26 bombers to just eight and instead of all airports to just three airports where the planes of the communist regime of the murderous dictator Fidel Castro were located. The surprise attack on 15 April 1961 on San Antonio de los Baños, Columbia and Santiago de Cuba was successful, but seven aircraft remained undestroyed, including T-33 jets, Seafuries and B-26 bombers.

By order of President Kennedy, the other five air raids on the afternoon of April 15, the two on the 16th and the morning of the 17th were called off, and with those orders and others he gave such as changing the place of invading Trinidad next to the Escambray Mountains for the lousy place of the Bay of Pigs, President Kennedy sentenced the 2506th Brigade to destruction and death. It was undoubtedly an act of high treason and criminal negligence. Without total control of the air, the Brigade could not defeat more than 200,000 enemy soldiers. During the early morning hours of April 17, the small cargo ships carrying the 1,500 soldiers of the 2506th Brigade arrived at the Bay of Pigs, where they were attacked again and again by Castro's seven planes.

Chuck, William Bishop was Clarence Ward Bishop. He used the name of William Bishop. He was "promoted" to Colonel by former Cuban Chief of the Army General Francisco Tabernilla. Tabernilla was a neighbor of Bishop's. Bishop had been a member of the Merchant Marines. Tabernilla was close to Batista and Irving Davidson.

The note has a line, that I previously blended with the arrow, pointing to Manell’s name, so it looks to me like it was written by this “Matos” character to direct Manell to start the file.

There’s a handwritten note pointing to the file number P-8593 saying: 

Please setup P (4?) file on Lee Henry Oswald and (load?) all data in here onto it 

The “here” being referenced by the arrow seems to be the P-8593 MC Station Oswald file, so it kinda looks like a separate “P4” file, whatever the heck that is, was setup on “Lee Henry” as some sort of duplicate. Either that or this routing slip just marks the first entry in the P-8593 file, which would make sense…

I remember him because he was outstanding, you know, and I went to these fellows in booth No. 8. and was giving them heck about shooting at the wrong target. And this other fellow, I remember him because he wouldn’t say anything to me. I tried to speak to him two or three different occasions, because he had a lot of guns, and I thought he would be a good customer.

Mr. LIEBELER. The fellow with the beard?

Mr. DAVIS. Yes.

Mr. LIEBELER. He was how tall, approximately?

Mr. DAVIS. He was over 6 feet and he weighed a good 250 pounds. A big bruiser.

Mr. LIEBELER. I think we can assume that was not Lee Harvey Oswald.

Mr. DAVIS. They were trying to find him. Charlie Brown was trying to find this person, and 2 weeks ago on a Sunday morning I saw him in an automobile out on Davis, I believe it was.

Mr. LIEBELER. The big fellow with the beard?

Mr. DAVIS. The big fellow there with the beard. And I got the license number on the car and the type of car it was and called it into the office. I haven’t heard anything from Mr. Brown since then, whether he got the information, but I am sure he did when I turned it into the office…”

Davis even gave the plate-number of the car they drove off in to law enforcement!

Virginia Davis who helped manage the shooting range describes the following peculiar character causing a ruckus:

“Mr. LIEBELER. Was this man with the beard there at that time, do you know?

Mrs. DAVIS. No; that was on a Sunday afternoon or a Saturday. It was a Saturday or a Sunday, and the reason I remember him, it was the same day they said Oswald was out there, and I tried to talk to him, which I talked to everyone that comes in, and he was noticeable because he looked like the Castro type. He had this big beard and he was heavy set and big broad shoulders, and well, he was just outstanding in his appearance. He had big red earmuffs on and I couldn’t help but notice him.”

Garland Slack, Mr. Slack, who made the complaint, and his wife corroborate:

“Mr. Slack furnished information to the effect that he had seen a man believed to be identical with Oswald at the Sports Drome Rifle Range on November 10, 1963, and believed that he was accompanied by another man described as tall, having a lot of dark hair, dark complexion, and a full beard.”

“Mrs. SLACK advised she recalled seeing a great big man with a beard, who was wearing ear muffs, a red plaid shirt, and green pants. She stated he was shooting "big guns" and was shooting from stall No. 4 or 5. She stated she did not see anyone with this person and believed that he was alone at the rifle range .”

Sticking with the theme that whoever was providing these escorts didn't have a big stable to draw from: 

Rene was Victor's brother and was involved with Carlos Hernandez and Victor in their first aborted mission to bomb Cuba. Rene and Carlos were stopped by Immigration in a truck. I don't have any pictures of him.

A better candidate for the 5'4" muscular guy that was dark like an Indian would be Acelo Pedroso. Pedroso was also involved in the BOP and was 5'4" and was in New Orleans during the summer of 1963 along with his friends Victor Espinosa, Carlos Hernandez, and Miguel Alvarez at McLaney's. Pedroso became one of Rafael Quintero's "Commandos" for the AMWORLD project along with Carlos Hernandez before being assigned to the Congo.

Harold Weisberg thought the 5'4" guy might have been Antonio "Tony" Soto. Soto was a pilot for the BOP Air Force and handled himself admirably. He was 5'4", muscular but not "dark like an Indian." Tony Soto below in the Congo. Soto briefly became a member of the AMWORLD project before going to the Congo by the end of November 1963.

 Néstor Antonio Izquierdo was born in the humble cast Pogolotti, in the city of Marianao, province of Havana. His parents, Camilo Izquierdo and Joséfina Díaz, instilled in the child his good teachings. The father was a master builder and from a very young age Tony worked with him. PHe soon learned to read construction plans and despite his young age, his father often left him in charge of some works.  For some time he studied at the electromechanical school of the Colegio de Belén, where he was a member of Catholic youth.  He was a close friend of Manuel Artime and with him he was part of the Comandos Rurales at the beginning of the Cuban revolution.  Later, following Artime, he joined the Revolutionary Recovery Movement and fought the nascent dictatorship, from which he soon suffered persecution to the point of having to hide in the province of Oriente. He returned to Havana and from there he went into exile: Mexico first, then Miami.  In 1960 he entered the Guatemalan camps where the Brigade was trained, whose goal was the liberation of Cuba, its great desire and the reason for their struggles.

We are not going to make a detailed account of the activities of Tony Izquierdo. Suffice it to say that he was well known by all the groups that fought against communism, that almost everyone called him to lend his invaluable services, those who could always count on his collaboration. P To give a brief and clear picture of who was Néstor Antonio Izquierdo we will tell some anecdotes kept with love in the memory of those who were his companions.  In these stories we will omit names to keep anonymity that we have been asked.

Néstor Izquierdo's first mission was prior to the invasion of the Bay of Pigs. Together with several companions, he parachuted into the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, in the eastern province of Cuba. The group, once settled on land, managed to bring together a good number of peasants who were prepared to wait for the invasion.  Upon learning of the failure of the effort, Izquierdo dispersed the group and crossed the Guantanamo base from where he returned to the United States. . During these events he met an American officer from the base of Caimanera, who was baptized with the nickname of Don Quixote (Hal Feeney).  This friendship would last until the day of his death.

During a commando mission to Cuba and while they were moving away from the coast once the operation was over, the absence of a man was noticed in the boat. In similar cases, the safety of the operation and of the men who have survived is more important than the life of one man.  But Izquierdo broke the rule: he took the helm of the boat and returned to the ground where he began to shout for the straggler. . At last they caught up with him, they put him on board, and everyone was able to go to sea again, without any upset.  Key, in the keys of Florida, we were waiting to leave in an operation to Cuba. . For us to go unnoticed, old Rip told us to try to look like tourists and to that end he gave Nestor some water skis to practice the sport by the Bay. After spending some time skiing, when returning to the beach, a companion tells him: "I congratulate you, Tony, you did not fall once."  Izquierdo turned to his friend and calmly replied "I could not fall, I can not swim".

 Two Cubans had been detained in the city of Mexico accused of attacking an agent of Cuba's communist regime. You could not expect a fair trial.  Left aware of the problem, he went to Mexico and rented a house next to the prison where the two Cubans were. D He immediately began digging a tunnel to propitiate the escape, but he had discovered and had to flee to Miami.

 Later he returns to Mexico but they have already separated the two Cubans detained.  Izquierdo enters the prison where one of them was, disguised as a policeman, and takes the prisoner out. In the street they separate and later Izquierdo is arrested when he tried to cross the border with the United States posing as Puerto Rican.

 When Izquierdo was arrested, all his friends mobilized.  One of them communicated with the American officer friend. Don Quixote (Feeney), who moved to where Nestor was and made the necessary arrangements and lent the corresponding bail to achieve their freedom, putting their own house as a guarantee.

Just some comments. I find it interesting that the CIA buried Izquierdo in Nicaragua for a few years. Here is one of their top commandos, highly trained, experienced, paratrooper left guarding what was left of Artime's weapons cache after AMWORLD shutdown.

It's also a bit unusual for two middle-aged white guys, in suits, to be walking with a person of color in 1963 unless they knew each other. The earlier photos show just the two middle-aged guys together. It would be interesting to see just when and where the "Izquierdo" guy joined up with them.

I've pulled out this pic from the RM's thread with the contribution by Robert Reeves. Speculative but if this is Rip then the guy to his right could be Tony Izquierdo. Robertson and Izquierdo were close having been on many missions and infiltrations together. Izquierdo was one of early recruits for the BOP and was close to Manuel Artime (AMBIDDY-1). Izquierdo was a CIA asset in 1963 working for Rip before moving on to the AMWORLD project under Carl Jenkins. He had previously trained under Jenkins in 1960-61.  As Jenkins said "it was people I trained, people I worked with, and people I worked for."  Izquierdo was identified as the Dal-Tex spotter by James Richards and Gerry Hemming.

So who is the man holding the umbrella? I followed John O'Hare's son on twitter, Thomas O’Hare. He randomly posted that the man holding the umbrella in this photo was Rip Robertson. He has since deleted his twitter profile. There is some controversy as to if Rip Robertson is actually the 4th person from the left. But I saw John O'Hare's son say it was Rip Robertson. A person that looks like Rip Robertson was photographed about 25 feet from where the Umbrella Man was stood - and just a year and 2 days after JFK was murdered the picture above shows the Rip Robertson headed a mission in the Congo with an Umbrella Man seemingly celebrating. O'Hare's son alleges Rip Robertson is the guy holding an umbrella and swigging booze. Check the bottle in his left hand. John O'Hare and his son Thomas were featured in August 5, 1966, Life Magazine. The article related how O'Hare was training troops bound for Vietnam. His son Thomas, 15,  was portrayed involved in live fire exercises at his father's training compound. John O'Hare was involved with the Civil Air Patrol. On October 22, 1963, he voluntarily resigned from the printing company Viking Distributors. O'Hare was listed an an employee of Viking Distributors until Oct 22nd 1963.

Interesting, CIA operative and Dulles buddy Sheffield Edwards quits the CIA 30th Sept, 63, Lansdale quits the CIA 1st November 63. O'Hare quits his job 22nd Oct 63. Would be interesting to see who else within the CIA had quit in 1963.

He also flew a B-26 during the BOP and was considered one of the more reliable pilots. 3rd from left possibly Ricardo Morales. Morales stayed behind an extra week with Alberto Perez. The other guys came home early Dec 1964. Disclaimer: other than Rip, I don't believe these guys had anything to do with Dallas although they knew a few things from Robertson.

Disaster predicted became disaster realized. Although the invasion was on, JFK was keeping his word to the Alliance for Progress that the United States would not be openly involved in it. He reneged on the CIA promise that an ‘umbrella’ of U.S. fighters would protect the landing; the Navy would perform only picket duty off the Cuban coast; and there would be no follow-up strikes against Castro’s airfields.

I don't doubt that the Nix film was shown to other agencies. I also miss James' contributions here. He was/is a wealth of knowledge. He was kind enough to share a bit of that with me over the years.

As noted by John Newman in Where Angels Tread Lightly, the CIA had a copy of the Zapruder film as early as 1965 where it was shown to officers of the Office of Training. I wonder what the subject of that class was and what version of the film was shown. It was also viewed in 1969 by a training instructor. Alfonso Rodriguez was the Director of Training in 1975. He had an interesting resume working for William Harvey, Desmond Fitzgerald, Ted Shackley and was the case officer for Manuel Ray, Rogelio Cisneros and was assigned to the Special Operation branch for the autonomous operations project 1963-65.
