The Retouching of the Backyard Photos

Recommended Posts

In June of 1964, Edward Thompson of Life Magazine sent a telegram to J. Lee Rankin stating that he wanted to challenge Lyndal Shaneyfelt's testimony that the backyard photos had been retouched significantly.

Thompson makes mention of a version of the photograph that appeared in Europe which had the telescopic sight removed.

Does anyone know anything about this?

James...because the dark rifle stock against the black clothing

did not reproduce well, virtually every newspaper which published

133A retouched the gun to make it stand out. Sometimes newspaper

retouching was very crude for 65-line screens. I believe that there

are quite a few examples of such retouching, some even not showing

the telescopic sight. I have examples somewhere in my computer

but doubt that I can remember the file names. All such newspaper

retouching was non-conspiratorial.
