James DiEugenio
From what I understand, Bannon was trying to justify his being on the NSC by referring to how David Halberstam shows how badly the so called professionals mucked up Vietnam in his book The Best and the Brightest. Which shows you how Alex Jonesish Bannon is. What happened with Vietnam is that one by one each and all of JFK's major advisors, except Rusk, left the White House: Salinger, O'Donnell, Schlesinger, Sorenson, Ball, Bundy, and then McNamara. And it was because Johnson WOULD NOT listen to any of them while he reversed JFK's policy there. Newman's book clarified this issue very well, showing how wrong Halberstam was on this. There must be other examples Bannon could have use, but this is not the right one. And it shows a lack of knowledge of recent history. Which is what we do not need in the NSC right now.
