Rubenstein the Communist

Recommended Posts

I'm presently trying to trace down the origin of the rumor, that Jack (Ruby) Rubenstein was the person that was involved with the Young Communist League etc. in Chicago and Muncie. I'd like to know if Revilo Oliver's source was Martin Dies or George Fehrenbach.

Anybody nailed this down......Greg??

Bill, according to Oliver's testimony it was Dies, though he says earlier that it was a number of Ruby-Oswald sightings that convinced him that Ruby was a commie to start with (the "birds of a feather" theory).

One of his other sources on Ruby was Frank Capell who published The Herald of Freedom out of Staten Island. Capell's sources trace back by circirtous route to the DRE.

FWIW, Faranbach's statements seem to be an honest case of mistaken ID (ie he was unaware that there was another Jack Rubenstein). Dies, otoh, was fully aware of the other Rubenstein -- and demanded he be produced to prove he was not the same person as the one locked up in Dallas.

There is at least one other source mistaking the two -- a woman who attended a Socialist camp in NY told the FBI that Rubenstein had also been at the camp. The FBI in this case, actually interviewed Rubenstein (the NY unionist) and he denied ever being there. As far as I can tell, the matter was then left hanging. If it's of any use, I'll try and find the docs on this.

Jack Ruby a communist?

Seems unlikely. Mob connected since youth, suspected of drugs and gun smuggling, then a nightclub owner prone to violent outbursts, with his staff often the target. He never stated his advocacy of the working classes. He was never known for his anti-capitalist sentiments. He lived and operated in the middle of nut country, committing a string of offences with seeming impunity, due to his connections with the DPD and perhaps beyond. His general demeanor is erratic. He's a candidate for psychopath and psychotic. As for being a communist, the evidence seems to be thin.

Mark, the evidence is indeed thin. The problem stems from a Jack Rubenstein in NY who was VP of the Textile Worker's Union and had once been with the Young Communist League. He later became a Lovestoneite... a follower of Jay Lovestone, chronic splitter of the CPUSA, who swung to the right and aided CIA in remolding labor against socialist and communist tendancies.

Some innocently remembered the "Union Jack" and automatically assumed him to be "Dallas Jack". Others such as Martin Dies on the extreme right however, knew full well that they were two different people. It simply suited their purpose to use the confusion to claim "Dallas Jack" was a communist and, along with Oswald, was part of a communist conspiracy.

Thanks all, Greg , I knew about Dies but wondered where he picked it up. I'm tracing these kind of stories down, to determine their origin, which I believe is important. Capell is behind many of them and Oliver was a JBS mouthpiece. I now see Ruby as much a "fall guy " as any of the others. Involved yes, mastermind ...no.

Thanks, Bill

What about the records in "Mary's Box" that Earl Golz wrote about?

There was supposed to be something about Ruby being a reporter for a Commie publication?

Greg pointed this out to me earlier, that it was probably a plant, and makes me suspicious of everything Mary Bledsoe has to say about everything.

Bill K, It wasn't Mary Bledsoe. It was Mary Sims.

The cops who were given the box remembered seeing a press card issued to Ruby by the Daily Worker when he lived in Chicago. No such card however, was mentioned in the FBI report as being found among the items. In any case, The Daily Worker was published in Chicago from Jan, 1922 to Jan, 1927- then shifted to NYC. In

January, 1927, Ruby was still a few months away from his 16th birthday - and he was still known as Rubenstein.

I know the FBI was inclined to paint anyone with uncomforable information as nuts, but some people really are just that, and in this case, I think they got it right about Billy Lee Jones.

Bill O,

I don't think Dies had any sources except files on "Union Jack" from his committee work, and a bunch of articles from various mainstream and r-w publications.

Capell's sources, as I said, trace back to DRE (and maybe one other exile group). When I get time, I'll try and find all the FBI investigative reports on this.

IMO, you are spot on about Ruby. In fact,I used the following quote at the start of a chapter on Ruby from a book I started on a few years ago:

"The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast: the

chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

Hi, William O'Neil

Excerpt{s} from the 1990 manuscript/book, YROJ Connection to

JFK Assassination re; Jack Ruby.

......the upper layer of our network leadership quickly branded

Ruby a communist and a lifelong brutal gangster. Every

smokescreening effort was brought into action to offset his

testimony {to Warren Commision} about the secret works of

General Walker and the national intrigues of the conspiracy

vanguard {John Birch Society}. This is the lesser price Ruby

had to pay for daring to expose the naked condition of treachery

in Kennedy's death.

It has long been established that Jack Ruby was never a

communist, a gangster,or co-conspirator of Oswald. Ruby was

ruffian, an emotional jerk, and the killer of Oswald, but he shook

the foundations of the "very powerful" select few in the LDS

{Latter-Day {Mormon} Saints} Rocky Mountain Fortress,Utah,

and their JBS {John Birch Society} apolitical/political headquarters

in Boston, with a clearly brave truth, about those who mislead the

innocent!

.........Jack Ruby braved the odds when he testified to Warren June 7 1964

about a " fearful and powerful organization and some of it's members".

RUBY

There is an organization here.....Chief Justice Warren, if it takes my life at

this moment to say it, there is a John Birch Society.....a very powerful

organization right now in activity, and Edwin General} Walker is one of the

top men in this organization.....unfortunately for me, giving these people

the opportunity to get in power, because of the act that I committed

{shooting Oswald} has put a lot of people in danger of their lives.

WARREN

Yes, they are very powerful indeed!

RUBY

If you think anything that I am doing or anything I am asking you is endangering

you in any way, shape,or form, I want you to feel absolutely free to say that

this interview is over.

FORD

Isn't it true, Mr. Chief Justice, that the same maximum protection and security

Mr. Ruby has been given in the past will be continued?

RUBY

But now that I have divulged certain information....?

Ruby died one month before his new trial was to begin, reportedly of lung cancer,

on January 7, 1967. And a lot of other people lost their lives?

Is it known if Mary Sims was connected to Pat Sims of Sims and Associates? (the loose connection re motion pisctures is interesting.)

Bill,

CE 3055 is the FBI interview with Capell. His connections to military intel and anti-Castro groups are examined in Deep Politics, and a one or two articles available on the web.

CE 2864 concerns the investigation that Ruby had attended the socialist Camp Unity.

CE 3008is a

reinterview of Union Jack him at the request of the WC in which he again denied ever attending the camp. The FBI then checked its own files on those who'd been to the camp and found no Ruby or Rubenstein listed. Unable at this time to locate the initial interview.

CE 2867 is an investigation of claims made by Morris Tannehill that "it was well known that Ruby was mixed up with the Communists" and that he "had a plane chartered to go to Mexico the day of Lee Oswald's assassination, but did not go." I believe this actually refers to the day of JFK's assassination. Tannehill admitted membership to two anti-Communist groups in Dallas, and had been interviewed in 1962 over "security matters." In the late 1960s, he co-authored a book called "The Market for Liberty". My research on him has been limited, but there are hints to intel connections.

I fully understand why you want to run down the sources used by Dies et al. It is a difficult task in which you can easily go round in circles by virtue of various players citing each other as sources for the same claims. The first task, I believe, should be to sort the innocent claims of people who briefly met Union Jack and post -assassination, jumped to the wrong conclusions, from the claims being put out to link Ruby and Oswald to a communist/Castro conspiracy. A line through Capell to anti-Castro groups may lead to less visible sources including Robert Morris and his intelligence cronies.

Concerning Mary's box:

Preston told The ENQUIRER that the evidence consisted of 33 documents, packed in a cardboard container about the size of a shirtbox and included:

* The document Cash mentioned, laboriously handwritten in part-English, part-Spanish, giving accurate details of the assassination. It also recounted an earlier plan to assassinate Kennedy in Wisconsin in September 1963—which was abandoned because security around the President was too tight.

* Newspaper clippings identifying the author of the document—the third member of the assassination team—as a Texas-born gunman who had hired out repeatedly as a professional killer in Mexico.

“There were notes stating clearly that Fidel Castro had Kennedy assassination, tht the killers were doing it for Castro,” Preston stated.

“The notes also spoke about Ruby and Oswald meeting in New Orleans, about trips to Mexico City, and about visiting the Cuban and Mexican embassies.

“There was mention of an airfield across the border in Mexico, and I’ve often wondered if this could have been the planned getaway field.”

Preston said the documents included a membership card, No. 52, in the “Fair Play for Cuba Committee,” issued to Jack Ruby. The committee was a pro-Castro group, and Oswald is known to have passed out leaflets for it in New Orleans.

The papers also included a press card issued to Ruby at a Chicago address by the Daily Worker, a communist newspaper.

I think I've gotten this last item sorted. During the '40s, the Chicago correspondent for The Daily Worker was one Ruben Resnikoff aka Ruby Cooper.

If there was any press card among the papers, it probably belonged to Resnikoff. It is also possible that a deliberate attempt was being made to somehow associate or confuse JR with RR.

Concerning Mary's box:

Greg,

Thanks for the info on Mary's box.

I always thought it was Mary Bledsoe because the women said Oswald stayed at her house.

Who is Mary Sims?

Also, there are Ruby Commie references that were investigated to communist meetings in the midwest somewhere - not Chicago - Indiana - in a hall above a jewerly store, documented in Mary Ferrell's chrono.
