Venable and Maddox

Recommended Posts

In 1967 James R. Venable is listed as Imperial Wizard of the National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Inc. in Tucker, Georgia. ('amusingly', he, after Royce Eugene Frankenhouser's death bought his glass eye at an auction(5 bucks))

Charles H. Maddox is in 1967 listed as Imperial Wizard of the Association of Georgia Klans.

In 1963 (when he stated one of their boys took care of Kennedy) Maddox is listed as Grand Dragon of Venables National Knights.

anyone have more detail on these individuals?

John,

In 1965, CBS produced a documentary titled, 'Ku Klux Klan: The Invisible Empire'. The network was given unprecedented access to inside the Klan's operation and James Venable was interviewed extensively.

If you can hunt a copy down, it does provide a very interesting insight.

FWIW.

The SPLC and ADL might be able to help you

You could try FOIA requests with the Justice Dept and FBI. I know and Englishman who successfully got info through FOIA so being a foreigner shouldn't be a problem

I got lots of hits form them using google and dogpile

No, I'm quite sure it's Charles H. Maddox. Lester may be a relative (I also wonder whether he is related to a Dr Maddox pictured with Byrd (owner of TSBD) in Mexico in 1948) Perhaps Tom can help out with that. The MSC files has documents on both Venable and Maddox (Lester and Charles), however they are from 1967 or thereabouts. All up they seem like a pretty unpleasant bunch of people. Venable claims Oswald came to see him. Maddox spoke of Oswald as being one of the boys. I don't know if anyone has really followed up on all this. Like I said they are nasty, and with Oswald cemented in place as a lone nut commie, those investigating at the time were probably quite happy to leave off.

John,

Apparently I'm still a member here, so for what it's worth I'm assuming you're familiar with Patsy Sims' The Klan? As well as Michael and Judy Ann Newton's The Ku Klux Klan: An Encyclopedia? If not, they are indispensable for any investigation/research on the Klan. The encyclopedia above all, since it lists numerous other associated far-righters (Minutemen, Nazis, etc) and provides the original sources from which the entries' info was taken. Much of the sourcing was from books by Bill Turner, particualry Power on the Right, etc. Also, many books on the modern "militia" movements generally provide good background on far right, including the Klan; Dan Levitas wrote a very good book on that subject whose title I can't recall right now (The Terrorist Next Door?).

Take care,

Dan

I can't help but thinking that the US Government HUAC Records would potentially supply a lot of info on extreme right groups like the KKK etc., some of you may be aware that on another thread there have been attempts to run down Roy Frankhouser's testimony, ostensibly it was supposed to be a HSCA depo, but now IMO it seems apparent he testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, which, actually was not dispanded until 1975, in no small part due to the efforts of Frank Wilkinson, who took on the powers that be, and won even after serving 9 months in prison.

Anyway, if we could find an online-source foir HUAC transcript's, testimony etc., it would be very beneficial for all who want to explore the issue further. I have searched, when I have had time, but without success.

Cheers

Hi John,

Most interesting. I did once look into the Maddox connections (family and otherwise) but I just wasn't able to get very far. I did come across a Dr. Henry Maddox who was allegedly associated with the Byrd family. He was also a minister at the First Methodist Church. This image below shows him at a wedding service for two KKK couples (now there's a collection of wedding photos one would be proud to bring out years later). A more idiotic sight would be hard to imagine.

The other attachment is James Venable.

Robert,

I've spent the last ninety minutes searching, to no avail. In the process, I put out a few email feelers to some who might know.

COINTELPRO documents pertaining to the FBI's infiltration of the Klan, if they exist, might also prove interesting. In my searches, I read in several places that the Church Committee found that 20% of all Klan members were FBI informants. (Much like the Black Panthers and the American Communist Party)

Thanks for all the sources etc listed.

______

I reread Patsy Sims "the Klan" and see that at the time of the auction, it speaks of the past Grand Dragon Frankhouser, not 'the late'.

The Maddoxes that are referred to here and in other documents are Dr Gordon Maddox, Dr Henry Maddox, Charles H Maddox and Lester Maddox.

Lester was one of many prominent politicians of the day with KKK connections.

Dr Gordon Maddox was with Byrd in 1948 Mexico photo, and Dr Henry Maddox, the preacherman rumoured to be connected to Byrd:: James, where was the photo of the wedding taken?

_________

While the FBI did have many informants in the various groups, the informants in the KKK tended to be active participants and passive informants. Also, information gained that pointed at more 'respectable' groups (such as the citizens councils) was often not followed through on. Nevertheless COINTELPRO documents are certainly worth studying. I'm spending more time at outside sources. It'll take time to even find anything of relevance to what really is a secret society.

Even the MSC which had exFBI working for them, such as Zack (ex Hoover assistant) would instruct its people NOT to talk to the FBI when they came around.

WANTED

For Racist Crimes

ROY FRANKHAUSER

"Mountain Church of Jesus Christ"

133 South 4th St., Reading

Reading resident ROY FRANKHAUSER calls himself a Grand Dragon of the KKK.

FRANKHAUSER was convicted of charges involving a school bus bombing in

Pontiac, Mi. He was also convicted of charges that he obstructed justice in

protecting a racist skinhead in Massachusetts. In May, 2000 he and the UNITED

KLANS OF AMERICA settled a charge that he threatened and harassed Bonnie

Jouhari, formerly of Reading. Jouhari is white, while the father of her daughter is

black. FRANKHAUSER was ordered to perform 1000 hours of public service,

apologize publicly to Jouhari, and other penalties. FRANKHAUSER was a security

aide to Lyndon LaRouche, a convicted thief and fascist. FRANKHAUSER was a

contract agent for the CIA. His "church" building is a fraud, for no one is ever seen

entering it but him. Maybe he is simply avoiding taxes. It is a wonder that his black

Latin, Asian, and white neighbors didn't throw him out years ago. His 40 years of

racist lies and insults have earned for him whatever punishment he gets from the

workers and youth of Reading.

Frankhauser has announced a KKK rally in Lancaster for September 8th.

Everyone should make an effort to go there at 9am or as early as possible to stop

these racists from spreading their lies and getting new members.

The following is an excerpt of a 15 Page document available from the National

Archives under RIF #180-10078-10023.

It is a letter from a private citizen named Grace B. Vale to the HSCA dated

July

10, 1978.

BEGIN DOCUMENT EXCERT:

PERSONS WHO MAY HAVE INFORMATION

AND BEEN OVERLOOKED

II. ROY FRANKHOUSER worked as an undercover agent and said he was scheduled to

testify before the Warren Commission in 1964 until someone in the Executive

Branch quashed his subpoena for "National Security" reasons.

Frankhouser said in a 1975 interview he has information about teams organized

for the Kennedy assassination by agents who infiltrated groups ranging from

right to left, including the Minutemen, the American Nazi Party, and the Socialist Workers

Party.

Frankhouser said Michael and Ruth Paine were fellow undercover agents whom he

met in 1960 when he infiltrated the Socialist Workers Party. The Paines became

involved with Lee Harvey Oswald in early 1963. According to Frankhouser, Ruth Paine was Oswald's

intelligence "baby sitter" and helped him set up a radical left-wing cover including his one

man Fair Play for Cuba Committee in New Orleans.

Frankhouser also said the Paines took Oswald to New York and attended an

International Scientific meeting where Frankhouser met Oswald. [1]

The following independent support gives Frankhouser's story an edge of

credibility:

a. Many researchers believe George De Mohrenschildt was Oswald's intelligence

"baby sitter." George De Mohrenschildt introduced Ruth Paine to Oswald, and

after De Mohrenschildt left for Haiti in April, 1963, Ruth Paine was in constant touch

with Oswald or his wife until November 22.

b. Ruth Paine did go to the northeast in September, 1963, and a Secret

Serviceman asked Marina Oswald if she had any knowledge about Oswald's trip to

Washington, D. C., one of the cities Ruth Paine visited. [2] Furthermore, in a letter to the

manager of The Worker in New York City dated August 31, 1963, Oswald applied for a job as a

photographer and said he would be in New York "in a few weeks." [3]

c. An International Scientific Organization did meet in New York in September,

1963, when Ruth Paine was in the northeast. Its name was the Comite

International de l'Organisation Scientifique, and its chief host was David Rockefeller. It met

from September 16 through 20, 1963. Ruth Paine returned to New Orleans on September 20.

[1] New Solidarity, November 2O, 1975. Norman Kempster also reported Roy

Frankhouser's revelations In the Washington Star.

FRANKHOUSER - 2 -

The United States affiliate of the Comite International de l'Organisation

Scientifique, the host to the International Management Congress, as it was

called, was the Council for International Progress in Management. They did not refer to business, they

were talking about managing the world.

In a welcoming speech the host David Rockefeller said the program had been

"carefully planned over a two year period." The official program which was

printed in the Don Bell Report of September 13, 1963, said, "Leaders from business, education and

government from approximately 100 countries will participate... Special grants from the U. S.

State Department, several foundations and corporations will bring approximately 250

of 'tomorrow's leaders' to the Congress, and to unique four week management development

courses... The Comite International de l'Organisation Scientifique, sponsor of the Congress, has

played a major role in the last 4O years in influencing managerial thinking, methods and practices..."

In addition to David Rockefeller, some other members of the Advisory Board

were:

Henry R. Luce, Editor-in-Chief, Time, Life, Fortune

Malcolm Muir, Honorary Chairman, Newsweek, Inc.

Frank Stanton, President, Columbia Broadcasting System

Harold S. Geneen, President, International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation

W. W. Overton, Jr., Trustee, former Chairman, National Industrial Conference

Board; Chairman

of the Board and President, Texas Bank and Trust Company of Dallas

James W. Aston, President, Republic National Bank of Texas [4]

(Warren Leslie wrote, "[in Dallas] there are a few men ,whose support in any

civic project is an absolute necessity. Among them [are]...James Aston, head

of the Republic National Bank...

The bankers are present not only because of the personal influence of the men

but because in any civic project the bank 'clearing house,' an organization of

all Dallas banks, must approve ... Without the banks... the project is dead."[5] Jack

Ruby's closest friend, Ralph Paul, who had a financial interest in the Carousel, was alleged to have

been a banker associated with the Republic National Bank. [6]

(Patrolman Joe Murphy said the pickup truck stalled near the Book Depository

Building on the morning of November 22,1963, was the property of a company

doing construction on a bank building. [7] Julie Mercer reported a man carried a

rifle case from this stalled truck to the grassy knoll, and said the driver of the truck was Jack Ruby. [8]

the next day, November 23, Ruby called Breck Wall In Galveston at the home of Tom McKenna

whose son was working on a construction job at the Republic National Bank.)[9]

d. Further support for Frankhouser's story is provided by Larry Schmidt who

lead a group who infiltrated right wing organizations in Dallas in the year before

President Kennedy's assassination. Schmidt wrote the black bordered ad that "welcomed"

President Kennedy to Dallas in an insulting manner, and was also the leader of the group

that attacked Adlai Stevenson on October 24, 1963. [10]

In a letter marked "DESTROY" on every page to SP Larry Jones stationed in

Munich where Schmidt had been in charge of public relations for Armed Forces

Recreations Centers before his discharge, [11] Schmidt revealed that he and his colleagues

lacked the ideological convictions of the groups they were planning to infiltrate. This

letter, which as Schmidt boasted to Jones his first letter would be, is on National Indignation

Committee stationary. In it Schmidt tells of deal he has made with the National

Indignation Committee (NIC) to merge his group called Conservatism, USA (CUSA)with NIC. You must understand I am making this offer with tongue in cheek - we'll get rid of our new 'partners.' ... NIC

is ripe for take over exactly as we planned... NIC leaders are not demagogues - are 'guy next

door' - nice American guy, sincere' dedicated - not too bright... everything is going our

way! I'm calling the shots - and I have painted a lovely picture - best con job yet.

"All plans must be in final form by 1 July 63... It is all up to you... You

people must learn conservatism immediately. Everyone will read 'Conscience of a

Conservative' now... you must know Conservative philosophy..." [12]

Schmidt was apparently an able and Intelligent man. He had worked as editor of

the Culver City Citizen, Culver City, California, before serving in the

Army.[13]

Another person associated with the National Indignation Committee In the

pre-assassination period was Morris Tannehill [14], described as appearing

highly educated, very well read, with an excellent personality.

After the Kennedy assassination he told T. V. Stephens Jack Ruby was "dead

either way he goes unless he gets a life sentence because somebody will rub him

out," and that it was well known that Ruby had been mixed up with the Communists and had

a plane chartered to go to Mexico the day of Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination, but did not

go..."

On February 18, 1964, Tannehill displayed a business card to Stephens which

said he was a sales representative of the Noel R. Chapin Company, 4136 Commerce,

Dallas , Texas.

[15]

In a report dated April 17, 1964, Tannehill advised he was employed at

Christian

Memorial Foundation, Kansas City, Missouri. [16] A credit bureau report listed

him as a

former employee of Acme Electric, no address shown. [14]

In Dallas Tannehill had lived at 5715 Beckley (the Holiday Lodge Hotel), [14]

where two strange deaths took place shortly after the assassination. One of

them a 23 year old

ex-marine named Jack Eugene Ramsey was found hanging in a room in the Holiday

Lodge Motel at

5715 Beckley, on May 8, 1964, and the other was the manager of the motel who

died shortly

thereafter. [17]

(Jack Ruby reportedly made dates for girls who worked in his club in the

holiday

motel in Irvington, where Ruby had an associate. [18] And Willard DeLacy stated

he last

saw Ruby on November 19, 1963, at the Holiday Inn Motel. [19] I don't know if

these Holiday

Motels are the one where Tannehill lived and the murder and other death

occurred, however.)

e. Michael Paine said he also attended meetings of the National Indignation

Committee [20] and of the other right wing and left wing causes, and indicated

Oswald did the

same.

FRANKHOUSER - 5 -

Paine remarked while testifying to the Warren Commission, "I remember stepping

over him [Oswald] as he sat in front of the TV,...and thinking to myself for a

person who

has a business to do he certainly can waste the time. By business 1 mean some

kind of activity

and keeping track of right-wing causes and left-wing causes or something." [21]

Even if Roy Frankhouser is an agent of disinformation, independent sources show

there is some truth to his story, and I hope you will thoroughly pursue the

above leads.

On February 23, 1967, a few days before making his break with the United Klans, Helm and Klansman Jules Kimble reportedly visited the New Orleans apartment of Kennedy assassination suspect David Ferrie. (Ferrie, an associate of Lee Harvey Oswald and New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello, had died the previous day, from a 'stroke.') Kimble is Held in Check Case

Claimed Last Year to be Klan Informer

-

A young man who last year claimed to have inside information on Ku Klux Klan operations was arrested Tuesday [4th] on a charge of conducting illicit checking operations.

Accused of making himself $1,405 richer at the expense of the Bank of New Orleans was Jules R. Kimble [...]

Police claim Kimble effected the theft by manipulating checks stolen from an industrial firm where he was employed as a clerk from April 24 to May 10.

In June of last year Kimble left Louisiana claiming he had witnessed plans to bomb the homes of labor leader Victor Bussie and a Negro woman teacher in Port Allen, and that his life was in danger.

He was arrested, however, in Miami last October on charges of parole violation in Avoyelles Parish, and agreed to return to Louisiana on charges of nonsupport of his family.

He then appeared before the Baton Rouge grand jury in connection with the Bussie bombing the same month.

Kimble was also arrested in New Orleans May 21 on charges of impersonating police, carrying a concealed weapon, assault and forgery. He had been arrested in Baton Rouge in February and charged with attempted theft and impersonating a doctor.

Discussing Kimble's latest run-in with the law, Sgt. Ronald Kennedy and Det. Nick Chetta alleged that he stole a number of checks from the industrial firm and deposited them in a special bank account under a phony firm name.

He then began making withdrawals using names of legitimate companies, police claimed.

When arrested, Kimble was on $4,750 bond. Police said a $475 check he wrote to the bonding company bounced.

OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY

STATE OF LOUISIANA

PARISH OF NEW ORLEANS

October 10, 1967

STATEMENT OF: JULES RICCO KIMBLE, w/m 24

RESIDING AT: 4839 Babylon Street

New Orleans, Louisiana

S T A T E M E N T

I met DAVID FERRIE in early 1960 in a barroom named The Golden Lantern in the French Quarter. I would see DAVE from time to time in the same bar and I flew with him in his airplane on several occasions.

One night while drinking in the Golden Lantern, DAVE introduced me to CLAY SHAW. I was with CLAY SHAW and DAVE for several hours that night which was in late 1960 or early 1961. From that time on I use [sic] to see CLAY SHAW on different occasions, you know, drinking and so forth. One day in late '61 or early '62 I received a phone call from DAVE and he asked me if I would like to take an overnight plane trip with him. I said, all right, and then met FERRIE at the airport, at which time I found out that CLAY SHAW was coming with us. At this time I also found out that we were going to Canada to pick someone up. No other explanation was given. While on the trip, CLAY SHAW sat in the back of the airplane reading books and slept. SHAW also had a brown briefcase with him. On the flight we stopped at different places to gas up and stretch our legs. We stopped in Nashville, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, and Toranado [sic], Canada. Our final stop was in Montreal, Canada. FERRIE and myself stayed in a hotel overnight. I believe it might have been the Hilton Air or something like that. The hotel was located in Dovral which was right outside of Montreal. CLAY SHAW disappeared after we landed and I did not see him until the next morning which was about 8 o'clock, when we were ready to leave and come back to New Orleans. When SHAW arrived at the plane, he had this Mexican or Cuban with him. This guy was kind of heavy set, dark complexion, balding in the front, in his early 30s or middle 30s. He sat in the back of the airplane with SHAW and spoke only to SHAW in broken English. The airplane that we used was a Cessna 172, which I believed belonged to a friend of FERRIE's. We bought our gas with a Gulf credit card which FERRIE had. When we got back to the Lakefront Airport,

I got into my automobile and FERRIE and SHAW and the other guy got into another automobile and left.

About a month or two later I got another phone call from FERRIE asking me if I wanted to make the return trip with him to Canada, but I told him no.

I have seen SHAW on different occasions in barrooms and at the International Trade Mart up until the time that the District Attorney's office started their investigation. I have heard other people introduce CLAY SHAW as CLAY BERTRAND, but he has never been introduced to me as CLAY BERTRAND.

I would also like to state that about two or three weeks after DAVE FERRIE died I got a phone call from JACK HELMS, who was formerly with the Federal Government [sic] and later connected with the Ku Klux Klan, asking me if I would take a ride with him by FERRIE's house to pick up some papers. I said, yes, and a short while later he picked me up at my house in a 1966 white Chevrolet. We drove to FERRIE's house and parked a little way down the block. JACK got out of the automobile with a flashlight, and it appeared that he went around the back of the house or into the back yard. A short while later he came back with a black briefcase and got into the automobile, at which time we drove off. Later I believe that the contents of this briefcase were put into a safety deposit box in the Bank of Louisiana. Later I believe that these papers were removed from the Bank of Louisiana and put into a big black box in St. Bernard Parish which belonged to the Klan. The fellow who kept this box is called OTTO. I do not know him by any other name. I believe that these papers were then removed from this black box, but I don't know where they were removed to. I did manage to get some papers from this black box, but they pertained to the Klan, and I turned these papers [over] to CLEMENT HOOD, an FBI Agent I was working for. I also had contact with CIA agents. Their names being STEINMEYER, who has since been transferred to Texas, and NATT BROWN, who is still in New Orleans, and another guy by the name of RED, last name unknown. I used to have meetings with the agents in different motel rooms where I would give them reports, pictures, recordings, etc., and would also receive my paycheck or cash which I would sign a voucher for, and would also receive further instructions. They would mail different things to me at my post office box number which is 701-30252, Lafayette Street Branch.

Several months ago RICK TOWNLEY with WDSU called me and told me that he had information that I had tape recordings that someone wanted to buy from me. I asked him how he had found out that I had them and he said that didn't matter. He asked me if I would meet him some place and I told him yes, to come over to my house. He said, no, he wouldn't do that, that it would have to be some public place. So I met him in the Kopper Kitchen on Tulane Avenue. After we talked for a while I went home and put on a suit and we went down to WDSU. When we got to WDSU, TOWNLEY called WALTER SHERIDAN in New York and I sat there while TOWNLEY talked to SHERIDAN. After TOWNLEY hung up he said that SHERIDAN would be in town the following morning. TOWNLEY asked me what I wanted for the tapes that I had, and I told him $500. The next morning they gave me the $500 for the tapes and asked me if I would do a film for WDSU consisting of what I know about the Cubans, FERRIE, SHAW, etc. The tape that I sold them contained some information about the Klan and other information about the papers that were picked up at FERRIE's house. WALTER SHERIDAN is the one who gave me the $500 for the tapes. This $500 was in a sealed envelope and was all one hundred dollar bills. This was given to me in an office in WDSU which was located by their newsroom. We then went upstairs and they locked the doors and placed a guard on the door and started asking questions and taking pictures of me. I even remember that there was a man from Sweden who was talking to the cameramen and they asked him to leave. They asked me questions such as, Do I know CLAY SHAW; Did I ever fly with CLAY SHAW and DAVID FERRIE; If I knew GENE DAVIS, which I told them [sic] that I knew GENE DAVIS very well because he was a personal friend of mine; If I knew GORDON NOVEL; If I ever worked for the FBI, CIA, to which questions I said, yes, of which questions WALTER SHERIDAN said he had already known that I would say yes to [sic]. I was then told to say that I didn't know anything that would help Garrison in his investigation and this was also put on film. I don't remember everything that he told me to say but he did tell me to go to Canada. He also said that he would edit and cut the films after I was gone. He also said that they would get me an attorney if I needed one. I told SHERIDAN and TOWNLEY not to release this film if they were going to cut any part of it. They said that when I got to Canada they would call me and ask if it could be released. They called my wife later and asked her if she would let them release it and she also told them no. I understand that this film has been cut and released.

MR. HOOD told me not to get involved with the District Attorney's Office and if the District Attorney's office tried to subpoena me, that he would take care of it. MR. HOOD told me to give all the cooperation necessary that WALTER SHERIDAN required. SHERIDAN and TOWNLEY also told me not to talk with the District Attorney's Office and to call them right away so they could get an attorney for me. That is about all I can remember at this time.
