  1. Of course, there have been some notable exceptions in the Left's coverage of Dallas -- Ramparts magazine in the 60s (as well as the more obscure but important Minority of One journal) and hey, Salon today (I take the blame for that). But by and large it has not been a pretty picture.

    David,

Good Luck with your new Book "Brothers".

I would like to let you know, if you haven't read it yet, that Phil Ochs met RFK on an Airliner and sang him his song about the Assassination of his brother and Robert cried.

I remember Phil telling me about this but I can't remember if Phil told him that he was in Dealy Plaza as a "Security Observer".

I kind of doubt if Phil told him because he was afraid of being killed about that fact but who knows because Bobby was probably scared like all of us..

I may be the only one Phil told about it because we shared secrets.

I found Phil's photo from the Documentary on the History Channel and almost everyone I have sent it to thinks it is Phil or his double.

Of course my Family and Phil's do not want to believe that Phil was there because since they were not aware of the secret stuff they do not want to get involved in the war over the conspiracy and like anyone do not have any control over where the truth may lead or how many other lies the government has in still secret files...or maybe truth is in those one million yet to be released documents.

I believe we were both set up to be in Texas when JFK was shot but the fact that I lived to tell the tale makes me think that maybe there were some folks in the CIA or the Mob or whatever who also thought that the truth should come out some day.

If anyone would like to see the photos and compare them with Photos of Phil and me singing at Ohio State two Years earlier, I well share them with the forum.

We are making great progress and if you havent yet seen the photos of the three shells that Mr. Dolva posted, see the dented shell at http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.ph...mp;#entry104042

    Jim,

It may be a good idea to start a seperate thread on your experiences surrounding the assassination. Althoug I'm 21 I'm a big fan of Phil Ochs The story about singing to Bobby is very interesting.

Would you mind starting another thread and giving us a full round up of your knowledge in this area?

    All the best.

  2. Sheehan it should be noted never said anything about a third party, do you really think this is a viable option. There never has been a viable third party candidate for president. Strong independent candidates frequently help elect the candidate running against the nominee of the party were they get most of their support as we saw with disastrous consequences in 2000.

Although most of them didn’t mention her leaving the party most media outlets reported her criticism of the Democrats. MoveOn is an overtly partisan group just as there is no reason to expect Republican groups to mention criticism of Bush or the GOP by conservative activists there is no reason to expect them to mention criticism of the Democrats by Sheehan or anyone else.

To be fair to the Dems 1) they at first voted to cut off funding and 2) they don’t have a very strong majority, to pass anything they need depend on the votes of more conservative members of their party.

That aside I was disappointed as well that they aren’t pushing Bush harder but with a 50 – 49 majority in the Senate (Johnson hasn’t returned yet) and some members who don’t support cutting off funding there isn’t very much they can do. Supporting a leftist third party in 2008 is more likely to get Republicans elected than anything else and would be counter productive.

PS - I don’t think Wall St. supports the war, while it is good for a handful of companies overall it’s bad for the economy.

    Len,

I had the pleasure of spending a day with Cindy Sheehan last summer. We discussed the possibility of a third party and she seemed quite committed to this notion. She said that we need a second party, as the only party that exists is 'the war party', so she has indeed called for the creation of a third party. The viability of such a venture is another question.

  3. I've just finished my undergraduate degree in History and medieval Irish and Celtic studies, so I suppose that would officialy make me a historian.

As John Judge says, and I would tend to agree with him,

"You can call me a conspiracy theorist, if I can call you a coincidence theorist. I prefer to say I'm an alternate historian."

  4. Breaking news on BBC

The ex-KGB agent wanted over Alexander Litvinenko's murder, Andrei Lugovoi, has said the British secret service tried to recruit him.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Mr Lugovoi said Mr Litvinenko was not his enemy and that he had been made a scapegoat in the case.

Last week, the UK requested the extradition of Mr Lugovoi, who denies the charges, to be tried for the crime.

The Kremlin says Russia's constitution does not allow it to hand him over.

Former KGB officer Mr Litvinenko died in London in 2006 after exposure to the radioactive isotope polonium-210.

Add to this the quid pro quo deal Berezovsky for Lugovoi which seemed to be mooted last night.

Looks like Andrei Lugovoi is trying to steal my thunder. Serves me right I suppose for showing off. I'd better get my skates on if I don't want to be out scooped by the Ruskie spook. So I'll be right back explaining who did what to whom after some brief messages from our sponsors.

Keep your zappers in your pants!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are obviously in the presence of genius, or a 17 year old xxxxx with a wery wery bad case of acne, and no Girlfriend. Perhaps your next post will reveal which. Place your money.

I think there might be a more likely third option Stephen...

  5. I have increasingly turned to the internet for online canvassing. I assisted my local Green Party candidate in making youtube videos. In a constituency of about 60,000 people we managed to reach around 1,000 of these through 3 videos, and it was all completely free. Upon viewing of youtube, you can see that Republican presidential candidate has 10,000 subscribers to his channel, which he updates regularly.

You are of course, at this stage, only able to reach those with the purchasing power to afford high speed internet access, and so your audience is largely middle and upper class. Such a target market perpetuates the continued participation of those who usually engage in politics, but is unable to attract working class or impoverished members of society. For those politicians that ander to the middle class vote (most politicians so), the internet is perfect, however, I doubt that the internet has the ability to change policy.

The internet allows a freer flow of information about policy, but the type of petitioning done online is usally topical in nature. It is rare to find real debates or advocacy groups dealing with the nature of democracy and discussions of alternative forms of Government or ideologies are seldom found on youtube, myspace or facebook. They definiely allow greater ivolvement, but only within the sphere in which the current system allows one to think.

There is little space for anarchism or revolutionary socialism on the internet. It is the centre being briefed on the centre.

  6. Hopefully myself and David will meet up while he is here in Dublin. I'm trying to contact an Irish journalist named T.P. O'Mahony, who has a good rapport with the Kennedy's and wrote the book 'The Kennedy restoration' about the next generation of Kennedy's. David and T.P. may have a good deal of information to share. Having finished my undergraduate degree on Monday, I am now free to pursue historical topics of more personal interests. I look forward to meeting David and reading 'Brothers', though I have not seen it available in bookshops here yet.

  7. The murder of Alexander Litvinenko is probably the first spook whodunnit that could have been solved by an ordinary Joe who just followed the discrepancies and omissions in the reporting. Not a single contributor on this thread could be bothered to do that

You may or not be relieved to know that I did. But I am not going to reveal just now who almost certainly did kill Litvinenko and why. I will only do this when every contributor on this threat has written out 500 times:

'I must always remember to follow the timelines.'

It is not a question of 'being bothered' Michael, but a distinct lack of time that hinders most on this forum. You are a journalist and so I presume you would have the time to follow up on this.

Would you care to educate us on the conclusions that you have reached?

Two books have recently been released on the Litvinenko case. Perhpas you would care to share your conclusions with Scotland yard?

  8. I don't like the sound of this

    From the bbc, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6697329.stm

    Japanese minister 'kills himself'

Toshikatsu Matsuoka was embroiled in a financial scandal

Japan's Agriculture Minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka has died in hospital after reportedly committing suicide.

The 62-year-old was found hanged in his Tokyo apartment hours before he was to face questions in parliament over his links to a political funding scandal.

Efforts to resuscitate him at hospital failed. Officials said police were still investigating the cause of death.

Opposition MPs had been calling for his resignation over unexplained expenses claimed for a rent-free office.

    Scandals and gaffes

"We've confirmed that Agriculture Minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka is dead. We are greatly saddened," said government spokesman Yasuhisa Shiozaki.

Mr Matsuoka had allegedly claimed more than 28m yen ($236,600; £118,300) in utility fees at his parliamentary office, where utility costs are free. He denied any wrong-doing.

He had previously refused to explain the expenses to a parliamentary committee but the Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, defended him, saying he had fulfilled his legal responsibilities.

Mr Abe's eight-month premiership has been rocked by a series of scandals and gaffes.

Support for Japan's government has fallen to its lowest level since he took office, a new poll suggests.

  9. Al Jazeera held an interesting discussion on political assassinations,

. They list several state sponsored assassinations as precedent to the current Israeli policy, citing the murders of Trotsky and Julius Caesar. They also mention the possibility of state involvement in the assassination of JFK. I find this quite a bold statement, this confirms my sentiments that Al Jazeera is the thinking mans news media, which conducts itself in a scholarly methodology of political interpretation.

I suggest that memebers take a look at this clip, it is the first of two.

  10. I believe High Thomas also wrote a book about Hitler and how he was most likely strangled by a member of his inner circle and that Eva Braun excaped. This was based upon medical records. Here is the blurb from Amazon,

    From Publishers Weekly

Rejecting historians' consensus that Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, committed suicide in the Nazi underground bunker as Allied forces took Berlin, British surgeon and forensic expert Thomas (The Murder of Rudolf Hess) asserts that the two partially charred corpses found by Soviet troops were actually those of Hitler-and a substitute for Braun, wearing one of her dresses. In his scenario, SS guards murdered Hitler, rather than allow a degenerate, raving Fuhrer to fall into Soviet clutches, and let Braun escape. Hitler, he further speculates, suffered from Parkinson's disease, which made him a partially paralyzed, grossly weakened, uncontrollably shaking insomniac. Thomas bases his detailed analysis, which raises far more questions than it answers, on Russian State Archive material comprising alleged skull fragments of Hitler and Braun, as well as on their dental records and on six folios of documents found with the skulls. Using Paraguayan police files released in 1993, Thomas concludes that Martin Bormann, Hitler's personal secretary, survived the bunker, apparently moving to Paraguay in 1956. Photos.

    From Library Journal

Thomas, a British surgeon and author (The Murder of Rudolph Hess, 1979), uses forensic evidence from newly opened archives in the former Soviet Union and from Paraguay to reach his conclusions about the final days of Hitler and Martin Bormann. Most historians believe that Hitler committed suicide and that Eva Braun died with him. Thomas counters that Hitler was strangled by a member of his inner circle and that Eva Braun escaped. Before reaching this conclusion, Thomas examines Hitler's personality and health. He believes that the dictator had Parkinson's disease and was a borderline schizophrenic. The author spends over 75 pages on the mysterious Bormann, arguing that he escaped to South America and is buried there. Those who enjoy reading about conspiracies, mixed with forensics and the flight of Nazi war criminals, will enjoy Thomas's reasoning processes. Yet Thomas makes a few mistakes. For example, he has Gen. William J. Donovan, head of the OSS, as William O'Donovan. Thomas's book will find a readership in public libraries with large collections on World War II, but interested readers should also check the standard work on Hitler, Allan Bullock's Hitler: A Study in Tyranny (1964. rev. ed.).?Dennis L. 11. John,

Are you aware that there was a recent documentary covering some of this mateial, including the Hess flight? I saw it on the history channel (I think) in the last few weeks. It went into detail about the Duke's flight and the possibility that the Hess that died in 1987 was not the original one. Apparently Hess has bullet wound in his armpit which was not identifiable on the 1987 Hess.

  12. I know myself and Stephen Turner share a degree of suspicion when it comes to the Joint Chiefs, and indeed their distain for Kennedy can be easily proven by looking at transcripts from the missile crisis and their hugging up to Johnson. John Judge wrote an article for his book 'Judge for yourself' in which he interviewed the pilots who flew the bombers with nuclear weapons (SAF I think they were called). These bombers were on constant alert and were in the air at all times. John Judge discovered that on November 22nd the launch codes (or whatever the terminology is) had been taken away upon order of Curtis LeMay. I will try to find the article online if possible.
