Robert Howard
I believe most Forum members are aware of the importance of Dallas Cuban's in the assassination, and it is extremely important to know the identities of some of those who were living, say for example Bertha Cheek re certain boarding houses circa 1958-63 Her residence at the time of her WC Testimony was 5901 Hillcrest Avenue. Mr. Griffin. Where did you live prior to January 1964? Mrs. Cheek. Swiss. 3914 Swiss. I have a 10-unit there. Mr. Griffin. You still own that? Mrs. Cheek. Yes.Mr. Griffin. How long did you own that particular residence? How long have you owned that particular residence on Swiss Avenue? Mrs. Cheek. Three or four years. Mr. Griffin. During the 3 or 4 years that you have owned that particular residence, have you owned any other pieces of property? Mrs. Cheek. Yes. Mr. Griffin. Any other places that you rent out rooms? Mrs. Cheek. Still, it would be interesting to know if he was related to Tom Howard. Mary ferrell's website has this information about Tom Howard "Ralph Paul called Howard as soon as he heard LHO shot (after first calling Ruby's apartment and getting no answer). Bought Plantation Club from S.J. Carpenter who bought it from Jack Ruby. Vivian Arnold (prostitute) ran club for Howard. Indicted and convicted for failure to make income tax returns. Suspended from law practice for one year. Died 1965." An interesting case which seems to have ramifications for JFK researchers concerns a case in which Ernesto Martinez Lopez, a "Latin-American" was convicted in the murder of a 12 year-old girl named Jenette Irene Mangan near Singleton Boulevard on top of Goat Hill, on New Years Eve in 1956. In 1960 the Dallas Morning News reported that Tom Howard was currently representing Lopez. A lone male in his store made the comment to him, “Tommorrow Kennedy will be killed in Dallas.” Then repeated “In Dallas.” This statement was made in Spanish in a dialect Basila believed to be Cuban. Basila stated that this individual was completely unknown to him, that he had never seen him before and has not seen him since. Basila stated that although there were other people inside the store, the comment was directed to him and no one else could have heard it. Basila described the individual as Latin American, but definitely not Mexican; height, five feet, four inches; weight, 135 to 145 pounds; hair, black; complexion, medium dark; clothing, hatless, short sleeve sportshirt and dark trousers. He stated that since he was comparatively busy at the time he did not notice if the man left in an automobile. Basila further stated that many people told him that Billy Graham was trying to keep President Kennedy from going to Dallas. Guest Tom Scully
Robert, I will give an exampleFor instance Bertha Cheek had two Cuban's who rented from her circa 1958, 1959, there are documents at NARA that appear to be postponed in full with her name listed as well as someone named Jess Willard Lynch. In 1958 - 1959, Jess Willard Lynch was the cook and manager of a boarding house owned by Bertha Cheek at 5212 Gaston St. in Dallas. He supposedly rented a room to two Cubans. One for 7 weeks and one for 4 weeks. See CD 1268. Steve Thomas http://www.history-matters.com/pds/DP3_Overview.htmDeep Politics III by Peter Dale Scott OVERVIEW: THE CIA, THE DRUG TRAFFIC, AND OSWALD IN MEXICO December 2000 Kryptocracies, Kryptonomy, and Oswald: the Mexican CIA-Mob Nexus ...In an open society, all of the Oswald facts and allegations would have reached the Warren Commission, whether or not they were true. The absence of objective evaluation and review allowed these facts and allegations about Oswald in Mexico to become enabling instruments of power: first to create the Warren Commission, and later to curtail its investigations. The power of these covert agencies to control US politics through the manipulation of truth is only one more reason for us to refer to them as kryptocracies, agencies of government which (in contrast to conventional bureaucracies) operate secretly and are not accountable for their actions and procedures.... Kryptocracies and the Kryptonomy (International Drug Traffic) There is a third factor contributing to the invisible alliance of kryptocracies and the kryptonomy: the power of the independently wealthy, and of the banks that cater to them. Informed observers of American politics have more than once commented to me that most of the hundred wealthiest people in the US know each other, and in addition often have connections to both the CIA and to organized crime. There is no shortage of anecdotal examples: James Angleton of CIA Counterintelligence delivering the sole eulogy at the small private funeral of Howard Hughes, or Joseph Kennedy Sr. being a point-holder in the same casino (the Cal-Neva) as Sam Giancana.[6] More relevant to the milieu of the JFK assassination is the example of Clint Murchison, Sr. Murchison paid for the horse-racing holidays of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover at the same time as he sold stakes in his investments to mob figures like Jerry Catena, and enjoyed political influence in Mexico.[7] These connections are no accident. More often than not the extremely wealthy became that way by ignoring or bending the rules of society, not by observing them. In corrupting politicians, or in bypassing them to secure unauthorized foreign intercessions, both the mob and the CIA can be useful allies. In addition drug profits need to be laundered, and banks can derive a significant percentage of their profits by laundering them, or otherwise bending or breaking the rules of their host countries.[8] Citibank came under Congressional investigation after having secretly moved $80 million to $100 million for Raul Salinas de Gortari, brother of former Mexican president Carlos Salinas.[9] When operating within their guidelines, kryptocracies are less powerful than generally believed. Likewise the power of the biggest drug traffickers is not autonomous, but depends on their government connections. But when kryptocracies and kryptonomy work in concert, as they must to sustain the status quo, they share in a source of deep political influence that affects us all. A good example of this is the collaboration in Mexico, between the CIA and the corrupt DFS, to influence history by presenting false stories about Oswald. But it would be wrong to think of the CIA-DFS collaboration as a simple alliance... http://www.aarclibrary.org/publib/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol9/pdf/HSCA_Vol9_5G_Chronologies.pdfAugust 1963 Mrs. Bertha Cheek buys property at 5901 Hillcrest. She says that she lived at 3914 Swiss until January 1964 when she moved to Hillcrest. Ruby had Mrs. Cheek's name in his notebook, with 5901 Hillcrest, LA 1-2705, and her Swiss Ave. phone, TA 7-9301 . Mrs. Cheek is shown in the 1963 Dallas City directory as the manager of Beachcomber A rtments, apartment 201, 5917 Gaston . Mrs. Cheek is listed in the 1963 Dallas directory at 5930 Gaston and 3914 Swiss. Mr. Sands of Sands Electric Light, who lights the fairgrounds, tells W. W. Litchfield that Mrs. Cheek is interested in investing in a lounge . W. W. Litchfield meets Mrs. Cheek on Swiss in the latter part of August or the first part of September... After a fresh read of Bertha Cheek's WC testimony, I have to conclude she either played dumb, like a fox, http://www.perryvermeulen.nl/verhoren/verklaringen/cheek.html..Then we can clarify these on these records. Do you remember which apartment it was that the Cubans lived in? Mrs. CHEEK. That was 5212 Gaston. I think the front room. Mr. GRIFFIN. Maybe if we could just get those records copied. Do you remember what year it was that they--you believe it was 1959 or 1960, when you went through those records with the agents? Were you able to pinpoint those to Cubans who you had there? Mrs. CHEEK. No. I don't think so. They were looking at the names. Mr. GRIFFIN. So I suppose it would be best if we just got the records since, say, January 1, 1958 to make sure we cover everything, and that would be 1958 through 1961. Mrs. CHEEK. I think so. That is when I sold the place. Mr. GRIFFIN. Well, up until the sale. Now, do you recall if these two men ever came back and lived in any other place that you owned? Mrs. CHEEK. I wouldn't know, because I told you I had managers in my apartment houses and my rooming houses. They did the renting. Mr. GRIFFIN. I see. Mrs. CHEEK. Sometimes I rented to people, but---- ... ..Mr. GRIFFIN. Did Jack's ad indicate he was selling the full interest, or half interest? Mrs. CHEEK. Half, and he wanted a partner. Mr. GRIFFIN. So you would have been a partner? Mrs. CHEEK. No; I wouldn't. When I invest, I make a corporation out of 386 it, or someone else operates the-business for me. That is the way the rooming houses; I have managers in them. ... ...Mr. GRIFFIN. But all the money which was accumulated by you was accumulated through your own efforts? Mrs. CHEEK. And other people working for me. Mr. GRIFFIN. Well, when you think about investing money, you decide whether you are going to put that money into some business or whether you are going to leave it in a bank and draw three or four percent interest, don't you? Don't you have any idea? Mrs. CHEEK. I never have enough to leave in the bank to draw interest. I either have it invested or going to invest it, what little I have. Mr. GRIFFIN. Don't you ever figure this out in terms of percentage you get or you expect to get on the money that you put up? Mrs. CHEEK. No; I haven't. Mr. GRIFFIN. How did you decide whether it is going to be a good investment for you or not? Whether it is the kind of investment that you want? Mrs. CHEEK. I really don't know. I just trade and sell. That is all I do. I guess I should figure more. Maybe that is why I lost all I did in the Beachcomber, because I just traded that today. I trade 5212 and 5302 for the Beachcomber and the Holiday Apartments on a contract to sell, and probably had I gotten a paper and pencil and had an attorney, I wouldn't have done that... One question reading her testimony raises is why Bertha's elderly sister, Earlene Roberts who her daughter tells us in the 1990's became a ward of Bertha before her death in 1966, was renting rooms and attending to them for another employer, and not for Bertha? Doesn't it make sense to employ people who you can trust, in a business like Bertha's? Bertha comes off as too inept to even do a back of the hand calculation as to the feasibility of making money from a new business investment, vs. a passive, fixed interest rate investment, yet she says she sets up corporations to "wall off" each investment from risks like personal liability, limiting maximum liability in each investment to only the equity in that investment. There are negative tax consequences to doing it that way. Buying more liability insurance, deductible as a business expense and personal ownership all the properties in her portfolio might have been something for her to consider. Separate corporations for each investment had the consequences of keeping separate accounts for each property, separate book keeping, the requirement to file a number of corporate tax returns, plus her personal filing, and probably paying higher taxes. If you buy the way the WC questioners allowed Bertha to portray herself, she seems inconsistent in her sophistication as an owner of numerous rental units to the point that she seems either stupid and very lucky, or she is hiding who she is and what she is really doing, and it makes it easy to suspect she is a typical, organized crime "front", in a money laundering scheme presented as legitimate business activity. Bertha testified that she spent more than two hours at the Carousel club watching Ruby jump up and down to participate in long distance calls, and she ends up annoyed that he would not disclose the location he wanted to buy if she agreed to invest in it. She says he should have arranged an option to buy the property to protect himself from the potential of her going around him if he told her the location of it. It almost seems that this portion of her testimony has been arranged by the WC to distract members of the press who might wade through it, from considering Ruby as someone intimidating enough to give Bertha, and any other potential competition pause before deciding it would be worth crossing him. Remember what he did to Frank Ferraro?

After a fresh read of Bertha Cheek's WC testimony, I have to conclude she either played dumb, like a fox, http://www.perryverm...ngen/cheek.html..Then we can clarify these on these records. Tom, your analysis of Bertha vis a vis the Warren Commission and Jack Ruby is very astute, I believe the comment played dumb, like a fox is spot on. February 9, 1977 Johnson Case Informant Beaten Federal agents have intensified their investigation of the disappearance of Robert M. Johnson of Iowas park after a key informant was beaten shortly after he was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in Wichita Falls next week. In an affadavit signed before he was attacked, the informant named five persons from three cities who either knew of, or participated in Johnson’s staged disappearance Jan 3 from a fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Most, if not all, of the five also have been subpoenaed to testify before the special grand jury, which is scheduled to begin its probe Monday. Some of them have had roles in Johnson’s grain storage and trucking operations. One of them is an Eagle Pass businessman on whose Mexican ranch the informant said Johnson was hiding. Port Aransas Constable Ben Cash reported. Neither Cash nor the informant could be located Tuesday. The Constable had told the news earlier Monday before the assault, “If they touch my man now with him under subpoena they are in real trouble.” A representative of the US Attorney’s office conducting the federal probe said Tuesday “we are very definitely considering charges of obstructing justice as a result of the attack” “This is intimidating a witness” he said. “He was under a grand jury subpoena. Bryan, Jr.,: McBurmer stated he had just received a phone call from CBS-TV commentator Walker Cronkite, New York City. Mr. Cronkite related that a male representing himself as Robert Johnson had called him via telephone from 444-9823 and stated that several days ago he had met Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas and that Oswald had approached him, to join him, Oswald in his plan to assassinate President Kennedy. Johnson reportedly gave his home address as 1601 Cox Street Jackson, Mississippi. Sergeant McBurmer advised he had dispatched a patrol car to 531 - 24th Street Oakland, California, where tele- phone number 444-9823 is located in a private residence. He said that the people at this address denied any knowledge of a Robert Johnson or of any telephone call, to New York City, from this telephone stating that the telephone located at this address had not been used in the previous two hours. Sergeant McBurmer added that there was a woman living at this address with the surname Johnson, however he did not have the woman's first name Robert: Apparently "Robert Johnson also spoke with Mr William Tangney, head of the staff for Mr. Conkrite and had added a variation to what he had told Mr Cronkite, this time telling Mr. Tangney that "a group of men" approached him in Dallas, claiming to represent Vice-President Johnson, and had asked him to kill the President. February 9, 1977 Johnson Case Informant Beaten Federal agents have intensified their investigation of the disappearance of Robert M. Johnson of Iowas park after a key informant was beaten shortly after he was subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in Wichita Falls next week. In an affadavit signed before he was attacked, the informant named five persons from three cities who either knew of, or participated in Johnson's staged disappearance Jan 3 from a fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Most, if not all, of the five also have been subpoenaed to testify before the special grand jury, which is scheduled to begin its probe Monday. Some of them have had roles in Johnson's grain storage and trucking operations. One of them is an Eagle Pass businessman on whose Mexican ranch the informant said Johnson was hiding. The informant who once was a trusted friend of Johnson's was admitted to a hospital in the Corpus Christi area Monday night for treatment after he was beaten. Port Aransas Constable Ben Cash reported. Neither Cash nor the informant could be located Tuesday. Cash, who also was subpoenaed to testify. before the grand jury in Wichita Falls next week, had said he was going to take the informant with him before the beating. The Constable had told the news earlier Monday before the assault, "If they touch my man now with him under subpoena they are in real trouble." Bryan, Jr.,: McBurmer stated he had just received a phone call from CBS-TV commentator Walker Cronkite, New York City. Robert Johnson told Mr. Tangney that he refused the men and was told to leave town by midnight. In the HSCA Briefing Book recorded as RIF 180-10128-10002 and listed as...... Crimaldi was a mafia hit man who testified at the trial of Tony Esposito, where he detailed Mafia activities in Chicago. Crimaldi is currently working for the FBI. Crimaldi states that he was present at the funeral meeting when Paul Ricca ordered members of the Chicago syndicate not to get involved in the Castro assassination plot business. Crimaldi states that he was once approached by the Central Intelligence Agency and offered employment as a contract killer in Europe. Crimaldi has spoken with members of the Select Committee on Assassinations staff. He has described CIA involvement with organized crime and has stated that to his knowledge, Jimmy Hoffa worked with Sam Giancana to plan the assassination of Fidel Castro. He does not believe, however, that Hoffa was involved in the Kennedy Assassination. Crimaldi speculated as to the cause of Charles Nicoletti's death, feeling that it was linked to Nicoletti's knowledge of CIA-Mafia assassination plots. However, he stated that he had no knowledge of Nicoletti's involvement in, or knowledge of the Kennedy assassination. See http://www.maryferre...75&relPageId=14 Five Friends from Old Mexico Nancy Powell WC Test. Mr. Griffin. Where were you when you first learned that President Kennedy had been shot? Mrs. Powell. I was at this guy's house over here in Dallas. Mr. Griffin. Who is that? Mrs. Powell. I don't know. You probably got his name down. I don't know which name you got. Mr. Griffin. I don't know whether I do. Mike Ryan? Mickey Ryan? Mrs. Powell. That is the. one, the guy that Jack picked up, the one I was telling you about. Mr. Griffin. How did you happen to go over to his house? Mrs. Powell. I had some friends come in from Old Mexico that morning. There were five of them. Mr. Griffin. Who were they? Mrs. Powell. Well, I didn't know all of them. There was this one guy I knew was a bartender in Tulsa, and when I worked in Oklahoma I---the last time, he rode this far with me. He had a friend in Old Mexico, and he was going to go over there for about a month or so. And I brought him over to the apartment. As a matter of fact, he went down there, and he had been gone about 2 or 3 months, and that morning someone knocked on the back door, and this was him, and he had these other people with him that I didn't know. Like I say, my grandmother lives with me. And he said, "I have some friends in the car and we have driven 1,500 miles and haven't eaten and didn't have any money. They had been down bumming around and could they come in?" And I said, "Sure." And he gets out and brings in a girl, a beatnik, which doesn't bother me. My grandmother is 76, and she is a beatnik Mr. Griffin. Not your grandmother? Mrs. Powell. No; the girl is a beatnik type. She is from England or something like that, I think. And his other boy comes in from New York and all three people are from New York, and he brings this colored guy. And like I live in the South, but I just figured that this is my property. He was a very nice guy. He was studying to be a doctor, and they had gone there for the summer. They came and I fixed breakfast and coffee. And this friend of mine from Tulsa has a friend over here and he wanted me to bring him over to see if he could borrow some money, because he was going to ride as far as Tulsa, and give them some money to get to New York. So, I brought him over here and went out to his friend's house and his friend wasn't at home. His friend's house is very close to the apartment that Mickey was living in. Mr. Griffin. Where was he living at that time? Note by Robert Nancy Powell later says that that her residence was at Gaston and Grand The five persons are 1. a "colored" man studying to be a Doctor. 2. a "beatnik" girl. 3.a white "boy" from New York 4. another white "boy" from New York 5. Juanita Buchanan said he called her from Washington, DC, 11/17/63 and said he was flying to Dallas 11/22/63 with "lots of money." Angeles' last call was 12/16/63, and he said he was using the name "Don Moon," Washington, DC, (202) 481-7057. Apparently, he was not checked by FBI. FBI questioned Duff to find out if he knew such a person, who, according to the FBI, traveled to Dallas on 11/22/63. DON BLAKE LYONS CD 199, pp. 1-5 Mary's Comments: "Never heard of Andre Angeles." Born Don Blake LYONS but adopted by stepfather, Hiram Moon in 1954. Had tried to contact Reid Pipin, a Dallas artist, through Buchanans at El Dorado Bar in Dallas for purpose of obtaining commercial artist's job in D.C. Don Moon's wife is with NATO in France. Moon had worked for Tommy Tucker Plastics in Dallas. MOON, HIRAM (MR. & MRS.) Sources: CD 199, pp. 1-5 Mary's Comments: Area Director for AFL-CIO for State of Texas. Steve Thomas http://www.history-m...P3_Overview.htmDeep Politics III by Peter Dale Scott OVERVIEW: THE CIA, THE DRUG TRAFFIC, AND OSWALD IN MEXICO December 2000 Kryptocracies, Kryptonomy, and Oswald: the Mexican CIA-Mob Nexus ...In an open society, all of the Oswald facts and allegations would have reached the Warren Commission, whether or not they were true. But it would be wrong to think of the CIA-DFS collaboration as a simple alliance... http://www.aarclibra...hronologies.pdfAugust 1963 Mrs. Bertha Cheek buys property at 5901 Hillcrest. Robert Johnson told Mr. Tangney that he refused the men and was told to leave town by midnight. In the HSCA Briefing Book recorded as RIF 180-10128-10002 and listed as...... Brandstetter, "Brandy,"........Our Man In Acapulco was broached and his linkage to Colonel Kail and George Lumpkin. Bill Kelly pointed this out.... See http://books.google....sVio4C In Anthony Summers notes, he wrote that Dolores Cao and Sergio Arias, were persons Antonio Veciana was supposed to contact in the event Veciana of Alpha-66 was unable to reach Bishop. Despite various blanket statements that David Atlee Phillips was not Maurice Bishop, it seems that is a pretty hollow argument to take..... I recently came across these two obituaries, and am certainly unsure if the names are just coincidence or perhaps the same persons Summers referenced....... BISHOP suggested to Antonio Veciana in 1960 that he go to the Embassy and contact a Mr. Smith and Sam Kail. Said Veciana: "MAURICE BISHOP suggested the names of these individuals because we needed specific weapons to carry out the jobs, and he told me that these were the people who could help me."Antonio Veciana was asked not to reveal BISHOP'S name to them. The HSCA ascertained that in 1960 there was a Colonel Samuel G. Kail at the American Embassy, Havana. The HSCA located Sam Kail, retired, and interviewed him in Dallas. Sam Kail, born June 7, 1915, was a West Point graduate who served as the Army Military Attache from June 3, 1958, until the day the American Embassy, Havana, closed on January 4, 1961. His primary mission as a Military Attache had been intelligence. Sam Kail assumed his unit was functioning for the CIA. He told the HSCA: "I suspect they pay our bills." In January 1963 he received the CIA's Legion of Merit Award. Kail said that prior to the American Embassy closing in Havana, there was a constant stream of Cubans coming through his office with anti-Castro schemes, including assassination plans, asking for American assistance in the form of weapons or guarantees of escaping. Kail stated: "We had hoards and hoards of people through there all the time." For that reason, he said, he did not specifically remember Veciana visiting him. "I think it would be a miracle if I could recall him," he said, but does not discount the possibility that he did meet him. Kail said, however, agents of the CIA would frequently use the names of other Embassy staff personnel in their outside contacts without notifying the staff individual it was being done. It happened a number of times he said that a Cuban would come in and ask to see Colonel Kail and when introduced to him, tell him that he was not the Colonel Kail he had met outside the Embassy. Kail said he would then have the Cuban point out the CIA agent who had used his name. Kail said he was not familiar with MAURICE BISHOP." Gaeton Fonzi believed that "Mr. Smith"might have been Wayne Smith, the third secretary at the American Embassy in Havana at the time Veciana claimed he met him there. Smith was a personal friend of PHILLIPS. DELORES CAO: WITNESS TO VECIANA/BISHOP ASSOCIATION Veciana told the HSCA that he had no way of getting in touch with BISHOP and that all meetings were instigated by BISHOP, a procedure BISHOP established early in their relationship. To set up a meeting, BISHOP would call Veciana by telephone, or, if Veciana was out of town, call a third person whom Veciana trusted, someone who always knew his location. Veciana said that this third person never met BISHOP but, "knew that BISHOP and I were partners in this fight because this person shared my anti-Communist feelings." Author Tony Summers found this intermediary. Her name was Delores Cao of Barrio Obrero, Puerto Rico. She was the wife of Sergio Arias. She had been Veciana's personal secretary at the Banco Financiero, where Veciana worked in Havana. Delores Cao left Cuba for Puerto Rico, where she became involved in anti-Castro activities. Veciana had recontacted her in Puerto Rico, and asked her to provide secretarial services, and to act as his answering service when he was out of town. She agreed, and in the months that followed she became familiar with the name of a man who called from the mainland. His name, she recalled, was BISHOP. Delores Cao also knew Victor Espinosa. Delores Cao mentioned that the name "Prewett" was associated with "MAURICE BISHOP." Journalist Virginia Prewett (died April 1988 at age 66) was a media asset of PHILLIPS. PHILLIPS admitted this to David Leigh. (In his offensive against Tony Summer's book, PHILLIPS had approached the Washington Post's Executive Editor, Ben Bradlee. Bradlee assigned David Leigh, an English exchange reporter, to look into the story). Virginia Prewett's columns were syndicated by North American Newspaper Alliance and she was a member of the Free Cuba Committee. [Fonzi, Last Inv. p319; HSCA OCR 11.15.78] Delores Cao was contacted in December 1993. FBI questioned Duff to find out if he knew such a person, who, according to the FBI, traveled to Dallas on 11/22/63. DON BLAKE LYONS CD 199, pp. 1-5 Mary's Comments: "Never heard of Andre Angeles." Don Moon's residence of Falls Church, Virginia is about a 15 minute drive from Langley, Virginia. Then there are some other issues.... MOON, DON ----- Mary's Comments: On Wed., August 10, 1977, Mary Ferrell was boarding Continental Flight 214, from Los Angeles to Dallas at 8:30 a.m., in Los Angeles. A Don Moon with Fullerton Police boarded just ahead of her bound for El Paso, TX. Also See WCD 199 pages 1-5 Another area that is more in keeping with the topic thread is that individuals affiliated with Transcontinental S. A. apparently were residing in Dallas, during 1963-64. From what I can tell, attempts were made to try to paint some of these Cubans associated with Transcontinental S.A. as pro-Castro, when at least one interview I saw revealed just the opposite. Cubans extremely worried about Camacho aka Ramon Cortes, Transcontinental S. A. Also See Manuel Rodriguez 5310 Columbia is a member of the Segundo Frente del Escambray and is an organizer of that front in Dallas. http://www.maryferre....do?docId=30106 Recently the name of Colonel Frank M. She said she knew Antonio Veciana and Victor Espinosa. http://www.latinamer...iana-oswald.htm Miami Herald, The (FL) - August 12, 1997 Deceased Name: Cao, Dolores Cao, Dolores, 80. Private services. Guest Tom Scully
Robert, I am still working on an answer to your RFK, the possible exception, question on the other thread. It is a good question deserving of a well thought out answer. Moon said he was in the Carousel club and recalled Ruby, '54, the same year he was adopted. Does it strike you as off that a man old enough to be in the Carousel club is being adopted? I am not even sure the following material is relevant to the points you are making, but Veciana's name meshes with the mysteries I have worked on. Cogswell, from McCloy's Amherst Universtiy knew Veciana somehow, and so did his sister. Cogswell's fathe invented an indoor tennis or squash court arrangement, of interest to Henry Brunie, McCloy, Brunie's wife, Anna Fuller Hubbard the mother of the Charles Hubbard who was an usher, along with Thomas Devine, in the 1955 wedding of CIA's Albert B. Carter, Jr, and also CD Jackson's wife, the two ladies being competitive tennis players appearing in sports headlines of their day. Cogswell's grandfather was the namesake of a WWII destroyer aboard which, Cogswell served. Cogswell's aunt worked for the CIA. Cogswell was a friend of Joseph F. Dryer, a man who knew DeMohrenschildt and engaged in the Kenaf cultivation business with Braga's Michael JP "Jack" Malone, aka "Ampatrin". Dryer and his wife, in 1963 housed several members of the illfated Bay of Pigs battalion in their West Palm mansion upon their repatriation to the U.S. Dryer married a cuban national whose father owned a pharma company. One of many things here I find hard to understand is why alphabet agencies needed Dryer to provide intel on Clemard Charles. Who would know Charles better than his Manny Hanny banker benefactor, James R. Greene, a colleague of Francis Plimpton and later part of Bushes inner circle, ala CFR and Scowcroft. Greene was dispatched by Nixon to Peru to demand the return of nationalized U.S. corporate assets. http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/weberman/nodule12.htm...ANTONIO VECIANA AND MITCH LIVINGSTONE WERBELL Gaeton Fonzi asked Veciana if he ever dealt with Mitch Werbell: "No. But he said that you were going to ask him about Masferrer now. (Why?) Because there was a lot of business between Masferrer and Werbell. They say that Masferrer was killed as a result of his dealings with Werbell." The CIA: "In April 1966 a Latin American Division officer (deleted) using the alias (deleted) met with Veciana in New York City. The meeting was arranged by a retired Naval Officer, James Cogswell, who had informed Chief, Western Hemisphere Division, that he had information of value concerning Cuba. When (deleted) arrived in New York City for the meeting, he was introduced by James Cogswell to Antonio Veciana. He immediately launched a discussion of the Cuban political situation and noted his strong feeling that the only solution was the assassination of Castro. (Deleted) advised Veciana that he was in no position to provide him with assistance or encourage him in an assassination attempt, and was only interested in gathering information which he thought was the purpose of the meeting. Veciana subsequently said that his roommate (Deleted) a Cuban refugee, had excellent contacts in Havana. It was clear to (Deleted) however, Veciana was attempting to use (Deleted) potentially to get Agency financial support for his organization." A report dated April 25, 1966, revealed that James Cogswell, "told AMRAZZ that he was expecting Antonio Veciana at that moment. Veciana, Cogswell said, was in on a plan to assassinate Fidel Castro. Details of the plan were lacking. Veciana wanted Cogswell to introduce him to a man known only as (FNU) Livingstone, from 'Winston, Massachusetts.' Cogswell's sister, name unknown, who works in Washington, D.C., presented Livingstone to Cogswell about a month ago. Cogswell told (deleted) that on Sunday night, April 17, 1966, he had introduced Veciana to Livingston. The latter two had spoken in private after which Veciana came away very pleased, but did not disclose anything except that he had a plan to assassinate Fidel Castro." In a dispatch titled "Alleged KUBARK Officer in Contact with Cuban Who is Planning Castro Assassination Plot" the CIA stated: "According to (deleted) 'Livingstone' was involved with Veciana's alleged assassination plot and he was masquerading as KUBARK officer." [CIA 201-259910 (deleted) 25301] James Cogswell was described as a New York attorney who raised funds for Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo. In May 1966 "(deleted) employee met with Veciana who again requested (deleted) in assassination of Castro." A CIA memo for the record dated May 31, 1966, noted: "Veciana had roommate in Puerto Rico, Felix Zabala, who visited Cuba November 1965, in regard to Camarioca refugee departures. Has an identical twin brother in Cuba. Has sister in Cuba, at that time, who was secretary to Ramiro Valdez, Cuban Minister of Interior." [NARA CIA 1993.07.22.08:55:23:460530] http://ajweberman.com/noduleX18-NEW%20ORLEANS%20APRIL%201963%20TO%20SEPTEMBER%201963.htm ANTONIO VECIANA AND MITCH LIVINGSTONE WERBELL Gaeton Fonzi asked Veciana if he ever dealt with Mitch Werbell: "No. But he said that you were going to ask him about Masferrer now. (Why?) Because there was a lot of business between Masferrer and Werbell. They say that Masferrer was killed as a result of his dealings with Werbell." A CIA report dated April 25, 1966: a. On the morning of April 17, 1966 before going to the Hudson Institute – R AMRAZZ-1 visited his friend, James Cogswell. The latter will be remembered as being involved in fund raising for the Price Pelaez Plot to kill Castro. b. Cogswell told AMRAZZ-1 that he was expecting Antonio Veciana at that moment. Veciana, Cogswell said, was in on a plan to assassinate Fidel Castro. Details of the plan were lacking. Veciana wanted Cogswell to introduce him to a (deleted) man known only as (FNU) Livingstone, from 'Winston, Massachusetts.' Cogswell's sister, name unknown, who works in Washington, D.C., presented Livingstone to Cogswell about a month ago. c. Veciana showed up while Cogswell and AMRAZZ-1 were talking. Veciana’s surprise at seeing Razz was astounding. In private Veciana told AMRAZZ-1 that he wanted Cogswell to introduce him to a lawyer who would handle a damage suit Veciana has against a boxer for unfulmillment of a contract. AMRAZZ-1 did not let on Cogswell’s confidence. Shortly thereafter, AMRAZZ-1 had to continue on to the Institute. d. AMRAZZ-1 was not able to see Cogswell again until April 21. Cogswell told AMRAZZ-1 that on on Sunday night, April 17, 1966, he had introduced Veciana to Livingston. The latter two had spoken in private after which Veciana came away very pleased, but did not disclose anything except that he had a plan to assassinate Fidel Castro. Veciana did not ask Cogwell to collect any funds for the project. Cogswell said he did not talk to Livingstone about his interview. e. Cogswell told AMRAZZ-1 that Livingstone had indicated to him that he would be visiting Miami in about three weeks. Livingstone did not state the purpose of his visit. Cogswell gave Livingstone AMRAZZ-1’s name and address as a reference. Livingstone promised Cogswell to call on AMRAZZ-1 when he visited Miami. In a dispatch titled “Alleged KUBARK Officer in Contact with Cuban Who is Planning Castro Assassination Plot" the CIA stated: I. In response to Reference A's request for JMWAVE's views on the possibility that FNU LIVINGSTONE of Reference B may be identical with Mitchell Livingston WERBELL III we feel that there is little doubt that LIVINGSTON is in fact WERBELL. According to his file, WERBELL appears to be low level would-be con man who has a history of being involved in CASTRO assassination schemes and of professing to be connected or at least in contact with KUBARK. According to AMRAZZ-1 "LIVINGSTON" was involved with Antonio VECIANA's alleged assassintaion plot and he was masquerading as a KUBARK officer. If WERBELL's present activities are as fruitful as his past business ventures, JMWAVE believes that he poses no threat to any serious KUBARK activities. 2. LIVINGSTON has as yet failed to call an AMRAZZ-1 as ho had promised COGSWELL in Now York City. PHILIP G. ELMARD [CIA 201-259910 (deleted) 25301] Cogswell was described as a New York attorney who raised funds for Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo. Antonio Veciana worked for the Office of Capital Development of the Agency for International Development as a consultant at the Central Bank of La Paz, Bolivia, with an office in the Passport Division of the American Embassy, circa April 1968 to June 30, 1972. Veciana believed that BISHOP was instrumental in getting the job with the Agency for International Development, because he himself was surprised the Agency would hire a known terrorist and anti-Castro activist. Antonio Veciana was hired by the Agency for International Development, although his application was unsigned. The CIA commented, "Veciana was (deleted)." Gaeton Fonzi reported that Antonio Veciana told him he did very little banking. Instead he spent his time working for BISHOP. THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AGAINST CASTRO, CHILE, 1971 Antonio Veciana and BISHOP instigated a scheme to assassinate Fidel Castro in Chile in 1971. According to Antonio Veciana, BISHOP suggested the operation and provided the weapon, a lethal news camera. (CIA rogue agent Edwin P. Wilson produced similar devices for the Libyans.) During Veciana's narcotics conspiracy trial in New York City, Augustin Barres, one of his co-defendants testified that he had given Reinaldo Abreu $2,000 in 1971 in furtherance of this plot. [uSDC SDNY 74-1219] The HSCA reported: Although BISHOP directed the operation, and provided Veciana with intelligence information, Veciana himself recruited anti-Castro Cuban associates in Caracas to take part in the attempt. Part of the plan to assassinate Castro in Chile in 1971, said Veciana, called for Chilean military bodyguards to capture the assassins before Castro's people could kill them. BISHOP, said Veciana, made the requisite arrangements with the Chilean military. Without his knowledge, Veciana said, his Cuban exile associates in Caracas introduced a new element into the plan, a scheme to blame the assassination on certain Russian agents in Caracas. The associates even produced phony documents and photographs. When BISHOP later found out about this unauthorized part of the scheme, he was extremely upset, and he accused Veciana of being part of it. Although Veciana told BISHOP he had no knowledge of it, BISHOP apparently did not believe him and eventually suggested their relationship be terminated. In a report to Senator George McGovern in 1975, Castro provided information detailing the plot and accused "counter-revolutionaries from Alpha-66" as co-conspirators. Veciana himself was not specifically mentioned. Max Lesnick, editor and publisher of Replica, the most prominent Spanish-language weekly publication in the Miami Cuban exile community, said he was aware of Veciana's involvement in the assassination attempt at the time. He said, however, Veciana told him it was his "own plan" and did not mention the involvement of MAURICE BISHOP. Lesnick could not identify BISHOP, but said he always did think that Veciana had "some high government contacts, probably CIA. Veciana stated the Lucilo Pena, a Cuban-born graduate of Auburn University in Georgia, was a co-conspirator in the plot to assassinate Castro in Chile.... Robert Howard
Tom, obviously you have been a real help in so many areas, just as you are still pondering the RFK question, what you have included in your post since mine, will take awhile for me to assimilate. So I wanted to show this to you and to the few others, who are actively researching some of these areas. One of the big picture issues, in relation to an area say, like the Dallas Cuban's and their links to various persons, is very much related to their cryptonyms. I mean, take Brandstetter for example. You would have to be sort of nuts, to think he didn't have a crypt, and the same goes for some of the high profile Dallas individuals. Remember Joaquin Insua Fernandez, head of the Catholic Relief Cuban Resettlement; died December 17, 1964, I mean persons such as that, if you look at the files a lot; a person has probably read about his contacts and activities, and didn't even know it, because his identity was only referenced as a crypt and the geographical location was not referenced. To remedy that, inasmuch as is possible I found the following. To say it is an important document, would be an understatement, there are over 40 reels of material in this one document. To my knowledge, I have not ever seen a reference to it. It could, "come in handy." HSCA Segregated CIA Collection (microfilm) This set of CIA documents is a microfilmed collection of documents to which the House Select Committee on Assassinations had access, split into 72 reels. See also a related and overlapping set of documents which were not recorded on microfilm. The reels marked "empty/withheld" held volumes of the Oswald 201 file. Document 104-10431-10003 is a finding aid to the entire microfilm. Below is 104-10431-10003 it is entitled HSCA Film [34 Pages] from Russ Holmes Work File http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/viewer/showDoc.do?docId=7528 201 File Numbers and accompanying names. William Kelly
Regarding Veciana being told to contact a "Mr. Smith" at the US Embassy in Havana, and Fonzi's speculation that was Wayne Smith. Wayne Smith is alive today and lives in DC area. He is a member of COPA and arranged for COPA members to meet with Cuban G2 in Rio and Bahamas in the 1980s. When I met him at a conference in DC we talked about his time in Havana and he said that he was in amateur acting troup with David Phillips and they put on plays as a sort of entertaining hobby. I mean, remember this person?.......Not exactly persona-non-grata Testimony Of Michael R. Paine Nov 23, 2009 ... Mr. LIEBELER - Do you know Col. J. D. Wilmeth? Mr. PAINE - No; I don't know him. A colleague at work lives nearby who shares a well with him and keeps it repaired. Mr. LIEBELER - Who does? Mr. PAINE - Clark Benham, another colleague at work, uses the water from Colonel Wilmeth's well and has to keep the well operating so I hear stories about Mr. Wilmeth and he lives with his old, ancient mother. I haven't met him myself, I don't believe. Mr. LIEBELER - You mentioned that---did you mention that he called you at your office at one time? Mr. PAINE - Yes; I think he has, yes. Mr. LIEBELER - Would you tell us the circumstances of that event? Mr. PAINE - Well, he wanted to see Marina, I think, he wanted to hear, I think he said he wanted to hear the native tongue spoken or spoken by a native. And so he was quite eager to meet both Ruth and Marina and called me to ask how and when and what not. So, he may have called me more than once on that subject. Mr. LIEBELER - Do you have any idea why he called you at work? In order to contact these women? Mr. PAINE - It seemed very appropriate. Maybe Clark, Clark, of course, sees him quite frequently, and maybe Clark told him that Marina was living with us. I cannot--I could be clued in. I remember at the time there was a reason for it. I mean it seemed appropriate, it wasn't out of the blue, but I can't--unless it was that I had been talking about Marina with Clark and then Clark told it to him. Mr. LIEBELER - You never have met Colonel Wilmeth? Mr. PAINE - I don't believe so. Mr. LIEBELER - Did Ruth ever tell you that Colonel Wilmeth had come to call on her and Marina? Mr. PAINE - Yes; that call or one or two calls he made to the lab to me was asking me if I would make it possible for him to meet them and so I told Ruth, and either Ruth called or I told her that he was, he would like to come on the weekend or something or he would call, I forget, but anyway I was a go-between to help in a polite way to meet Ruth. Mr. LIEBELER - Did Ruth tell you about the meeting when he came? Mr. PAINE - She did; yes. Mr. LIEBELER - Tell us about it. Mr. PAINE - I think she said she had a good time, I don't remember. Mr. LIEBELER - Do you remember any of the details of what she said? Mr. PAINE - I don't remember the details; no.
