Did he buy like a winter-outfit before going to sunny CA ? I do not recall reading anything else about that. Of course it can get pretty chilly during the Japanese winter as well. I would think that Robert's remark did indeed relate to his visit to Robert and his mother on leave after his return to the US, December time frame, and Robert might have noticed his having new and exceptionally heavy weather clothing at that time.
