FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, Lee Harvey Oswald wrote a letter to John Connally, a man who he would later be accused of shooting in the back with a high-powered rifle. We now know Oswald as a former U.S. Marine defector to the Soviet Union who then wanted to return home, while Connally was the Secretary of the Navy that had given Oswald a less than honorable discharge because of his defection.

Oswald wrote Connally to explain the circumstances of his discharge and to complain about the stories written by reporters in Moscow that made it appear as though it were another "turncoat" sensation.

"I wish to call your attention to a case about which you may have personal knowledge since you are a resident of Ft. Worth, as I am." wrote Oswald. "in November, 1959, an event was well publicated in the Ft. Worth newspapers concerning a person who had gone to the Soviet Union to reside for a short time, (much in the same way as E. Hemingway resided in Paris)."

"This person, in answers to question put to him by reporters in Moscow, criticized certain facets of American life. The story was blown up into another 'turncoat' sensation, with the result being the Navy

department gave this person a belated dishonorable discharge, although he had received an honorable discharge after three years service on September 11, 1959 at El Toro, Marine corps base in California. These are the basic facts of my case. I have always had the full sanction of the U.s. Embassy, Moscow, USSR, and hence the U.S. Government..."

By the time Oswald sent the letter Connally had been replaced as Secretary of the Navy by Fred North, another Fort Worth, Texas resident who was definitely aware of Oswald's situation since he was associated with Oswald's mother.

The first of the reporters to put questions to Oswald in November, 1959 was Aline Mosby of UPI, the organization that sent Richard Helms to Germany before World War II and putting him into a career that would eventually make him CIA director.

The second reporter was Priscilla Johnson (McMillan), who was a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance (NANA).

The North American Newspaper Alliance doesn't exist today as a corporate entity, but other entities are still conducting similar operations today, affecting events by clandestine means.

Over the years NANA have employed correspondents that have repeatedly become entangled in clandestine affairs.

There is one inherent difference between an independent journalist and a covert intelligence agent posing as one - you can't depend on the agent to tell the truth or give an accurate appraisal of the situation because of their hidden allegiances.

The idea of secret agents posing as journalists is not a new or unique one, and among the benefits obtained from this is vast amount of literature they produced.

When W. Somerset Maugham was sent to Russia in 1917 he went as a journalist, and from his experiences we have his novel Ashenden, a spy novel complete with Cuban assassins, dead drops and ciphers.

Grahan Greene's Our Man In Havana could not have been written had not Greene worked in the counterintelligence corps during the War and made the acquaintance of Kim Philby, probably the greatest journalist-double agent of all time.

Besides Maugham and Greene, the British Intelligence circle of writers-spies also includes luminaries such as Noel Coward, Malcolm Muggeridge, Cyril Connallly and brothers Peter and Ian Fleming, whose work inspired such American literary copycats as William F. Buckly, E. Howard Hunt and David Phillips. Hunt wrote prodigious pulp fiction paperbacks and was the ghostwriter of Alan Dulles' "The Craft of Intelligence," while David Phillips novelized "The Carlos Contract" and gave us a number of non-fiction books that have helped us understand the interworkings of the CIA.

In Fleming's official biography, The Life of Ian Fleming, John Pearson relates (p. 180), "During the next few years the Bryces and Black Hole Hollow Farm were to play their part in the story of James Bond and the life of his creator. Fleming was to get the material for some of his Bond books here, and he set one of his stories - the hideaway of Van Hammerstein on "For Your Eyes Only - against the background of the farm"

"Bryce had bought himself an oil well in Texas which had just started to produce, and out of the proceeds he had decided to acquire a controlling interest in the North American Newspaper Alliance. N.A.N.A. was one of the big American agencies specializing in syndicating feature articles, but by the time Bryce bought it it's prestige was not what it had been. He and his associate, Ernest Cuneo, were planning to restore NANA to its former glory, and during that weekend at Black Hole Hollow Farm Fleming was drawn into the project.."

Cuneo was former legal aid to President Roosevelt, helped engineer his third term, and served as an OSS officer during WWII. As Peareson puts it Cuneoe was, "one of the group around General Donovan and Willian Stephenson," who formed the basis of close U.S. and British cooperation during World War II and the Cold War that followed. Cuneo served as official wartime liaison between British Intelligence, the OSS and the FBI.

According to Pearson, the purchase of NANA was Cuneo's idea. "For Bryce it was never more than a rich man's hobby. Cuneo was more serious, and Fleming was invited to help. More than this, he was asked to take charge of the European end of the operation, with the resounding title of European vice-president." Their taking control of NANA in 1951 occured at a time when the delicate U.S. - British Security Coordination was put to the test by the defection of two British diplomats, Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean.

As NANA was originally established by the combined international desks of the L.A. Times and New York Times, Ian Fleming added the British element - Lord Kemsley's London Sunday Times. As Pearson notes, "Fleming persuaded Lord Kemsley to give office space in Kemsley House in return for first call on its services, and he was bringing all his considerable flair to building it up."

A more recent Fleming biographer, Andrew Lycett (in The Man Behind Bond, 1995) reports that Fleming not only got office space, but utilized correspondents. "Within a short time Mercury correspondents were supplying a third of NANA's material. Among those who worked with Fleming were Sylvia Short, named European Editor, graphics artist Robert Harling, who designed a new NANA logo, and foreign correspondent Richard Hughes.

In a 1953 letter to Cuneo, Fleming wrote that he was sitting on the knees of the vice-chairman (Bryce), while the London Editor (Short) was on his lap, a situation he described as a "Turkish sandwich".

Fleming himself referred to NANA in his novel Live & Let Die while describing the music-journalist background of James Bond's fictional sidekick, Felix Leiter, who wrote music reviews for "NANA", a thinly veiled disguise for Harry Pleasants, who debriefed Nazi general Reinhard Gehlen for the CIA while writing Jazz reviews for the Philadelphia Bulletin and New York Times.

Fleming recognized the good attributes necessary to be a good reporter were the same as those necessary to be a good spy. Richard Hughes was Fleming's best correspondent, and it was through Fleming's direction that Hughes obtained the first "interview" in Moscow with the double-agent defectors Guy Burges and Donald Maclean in 1955., though it's not clear whether he did this for NANA or British Intelligence. It was, however, during the 1951 - 1956 time period that the Bryce-Cuneo-Fleming team owned and ran the agency.

After a number of years running NANA, Bryce, Cuneo and Fleming sold their interests in the company to a Canadian syndicate in 1956. According to former NANA director Sid Goldberg, [in a telephone conversation .110798] NANA was purchased on Dec. 31, 1971 by the United Features Syndicate (UFS) which operated NANA until it was folded in 1982.

But that didn't stop NANA's operators from pursuing its clandestine operations, especially when it came to the defectors and Cuba. Goldberg, who came into NANA as Fleming was ushered out, concurred that there was a thin line between what was Fleming's responsibilities as an editor and his espionage operations. Fleming, notes Goldberg, had a reputation for hiring beautiful, young women as NANA correspondents. It was his man Richard Hughes however, who got to meet Burgess and Maclean in Moscow.

As a foreign correspondent working for NANA in Moscow, Priscilla Johnson (McMillan) was one of the first American reporters to interview another defector - Lee Harvey Oswald. In what was later characterized as an ironic twist of fate, she later obtained the exclusive rights to the story Oswald's wife Marina after the assassination.

If NANA was a big espionage operation, it's Moscow unit was run, as John Newman put it "a shoestring operation consisting of her and her hotel room at the Metropole."

In her book Lee & Marina, she wrote: " I had just returned from a visit to the United States and, on November 16,(1959) I went to the consular office of the American Embassy, as the American reporters did, to pick up my mail. John McVicker welcomed me back with these words: 'Oh, by the way, there's a young American in our hotel trying to defect. He won't talk to any of us, but maybe he'll talk to you because you're a woman.'"

McVicker turned out to be right... He settled into an armchair, I brought him tea from a little burner I kept on the floor, and he started talking fairly easily. He spoke quietly, unemphatically, and only rarely betrayed by a gesture or a slight change of tone that what he was saying at that moment meant anything special to him..."

Oswald wanted to defect, and was angry at the U.S. government, especially Richard Snyder at the Embassy. "Lee's tone was level, almost expressionless, and while I realized that his words were bitter, somehow I did not feel that he was angry. Moreover, he did not seem like fully-grown man to me, for the blinding fact, the one that obliterated nearly every other fact about him, was hius youth. He looks about seventeen. Proudly, as a boy might, he told me about his expedition into Moscow

alone."

Oswald was particularly upset that the Embassy had told the press of his defection, and now he wanted to tell "his side of the story".

They talked in her hotel room until 2 am in the morning. Did Oswald want to look over the story the next day? Maybe to check for mistakes or something? "No," he said, "I trust you."

She filed her story to New York NANA the next day, but most of it wouldn't be published until after the assassination.

In her two year stay in Moscow, (according to researcher Peter Witmey], Priscilla Johnson (McMillan - PJM] provide two articles for the Progressive magazine and filed over 100 reports to NANA, although not all of them were published. According to Goldberg, who John Newman identifies as Priscilla's editor at NANA in New York, "Priscilla had many NANA stories published, perhaps over 100... The primary reason we chose not to publish Priscilla's Oswald story in 1959 was that we had more interesting stories on hand. We operated on a daily budget and always had more stories submitted than we distributed. We chose the most important or the most interesting ones for distribution... "

In response to a letter from Whitmey, foreign news before WWII, it was now a very marginal operation, picking up editor Erwin Knoll replied, "...though NANA had been an important source of and distributing freelance stories here and there... I suspect that by their very nature, there outfits could have been easy vehicles for providing journalist 'cover' to CIA operatives, although I do not know this to be a fact."

According to her HSCA testimony, upon her return to the United States from Moscow in November 1962, PJM was debriefed for the first time by an agent of the CIA at the Brattle Inn in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Apparently she did not have to be debriefed after interviewing Oswald in Moscow because everything they need to know was contained in her November, 16, 1959 report to NANA. The Brattle Inn is also mentioned however, at the bottom of the 1959 report, indicating to some researchers (Hal Verb. Third Decade, Vol. 80), that "it was most likely the CIA agent himself who wrote the words and not Priscilla... For one thing, the writing pattern: Johnson's signature and the "Inn" notation appear to be two different styles of writing." Hal Verb implies that Priscilla submitted her report on Oswald's defection, but the CIA censored the story, until after the assassination.

The Warren Report published (Vol. XX page 288) a copy of PJM's typed, unpublished Nov., 1959 article, and Verb notes some redacted words refer to another defector, Robert Webster, the plastics specialist from the RAND corporation. Another anomaly is the fact that PJM's November 22, 1963 report to NANA was published in part in the Boston Globe on November 24, 1963, with one pertinent paragraph left out, the one mentioning Webster. Verb speculates that the thing about, “Webster/Oswald is that both seem almost carbon copies of what appears to be a 'false defector' scam being carried out against the Soviets."

PJM's opinion, based on her writings, and as summarized by Whitmey, "in her view, Oswald was a deeply disturbed individual, whose decision to kill the President was not well panned out and, in fact, was almost spontanous, and closely related to events surrounding his crumbling marriage." Yet, she herself is surrounded by other defectors and spies, such as Cord Meyer and Stalin's daughter Svetlana Alilluyeva, whose autobiography and letters PJM edited.

John Newman, who interviewed PJM for his book, Oswald and the CIA, noted in a footnote: "years later, rumors would surface that NANA was associated with the CIA.. NANA was run by Ernie Cuneo and Priscilla's editor was Sidney Goldberg. Priscilla had no inkling of any NANA-CIA relationship at the time. Today she has heard the rumors."

As revealed in the recently declassified documents, PJM was a friend and neighbor of a CIA officer who "was waiting for her to grow up," and through their mutual association with the World Federalists, Cord Meyer. Cord Meyer was the CIA official affiliated with the Domestic Contact Division that debriefed Americans who returned from abroad (including journalists), and also ran the International Organizations Division, which financially supported hundreds of allegedly independent news organizations.

Ironically, Cord Meyer's ex-wife - Mary Pinchot, another JFK mistress, also worked for the ubiquitous NANA [according to Lisa Pease].

One of the CIA's more prolific media assets was NANA correspondent Virginia Prewett, who covered Cuban and Latin American affairs during the height of the CIA's war against Castro.

While confirming the existence of Antonio Vechina's CIA control officer, code named "Maurice Bishop," journalist Anthony Summers located Vecina's former secretary, who recalled that "Bishop" was associated with an American journalist named "Prewett."

Summers located Virginia Prewett in Washington and arranged to meet her with a Washington Post reporter, David Leigh. Virginia Prewitt recalled covering Alpha 66 and anti-Castro operations in the sixties, and knew "Mr Bishop." Of him said, "You had to move around people like that." Indeed. [Gaeton Fonzi, The Last Investigation, p. 320].

Virginia Prewett, Ernest Cuneo, CIA officer Paul Bethel and Clare Booth Luce (of Time-Life) were all founders of the Citizens Committee to Free Cuba, one of the anti-Castro groups backed by the CIA whose operations entwined with the events surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy.

When my first book, The Hundred Million Dollar Payoff, was published in 1974, I was contacted by Sid Goldberg after my appearance on NBC’s Today Show. At his invitation I met with him and his wife, Lucianne, on my next visit to Manhattan.

Sid asked me to write an article comprised five parts based on the contents of my book, which was then serialized by NANA to newspapers around the country.

Lucianne stayed in communication with me over the years and I conferred with her on several occasions on later trips to Manhattan. She was intensely interested in what had occurred in Watergate.

When Billie Sol Estes wanted to tell the story of his relationship with LBJ in book form, I arranged for Lucianne to fly to Dallas where I met her and we drove to Abilene to meet with Billie sol regarding his proposed book. She indicated that she would serve as his literary agent when he finally decided to write his book.

Lucianne was one of the few people with whom I came into contact who had actually met Malcolm “Mac” Wallace, the stone-killer retained by LBJ to do his bidding.

She recounted this in an article that appeared in The Texas Observer of November 7, 1986, titled “The Killing of Henry Marshall.” This particular article, written by Bill Adler under a grant from the Texas Investigative Reporters Fund, is “must’ reading for those interested in the LBJ-Billie Sol Estate-Cliff Carter-Malcolm “Mac” Wallace relationship. [Earlier this year I sent to John Simkin a copy of the article through the postal facilities, along with other assassination materials. John has cited the article subsequently in writing in the Forum.]

The key paragraphs that mention Lucianne appeared on page 18 of the Observer’s article and are as follows:

“Three months after Mac Wallace walked out of the Travis County Courthouse [where he had been convicted of the killing of John Kinser, the lover of LBJ’s sister], he went to work for Temco, Inc., in its electronics and missiles plant in Garland [Texas]. Except for a short spell, he remained with the company until February of 1961. It was in January of that year, claims Billie Sol Estes, that Wallace, Billie Sol, Cliff Carter and Johnson met at Johnson’s house in Washington to discuss killing Henry Marshall. Little is known about Wallace’s whereabouts that month, other than at some point he was arrested in Dallas for public drunkenness; it cannot be confirmed that Wallace was in Washington around the time of the inauguration – when the meeting supposedly took place.

“But Wallace knew Cliff Carter. The two were in Washington together the previous summer, when Johnson was making a run for the 1960 presidential nomination. Wallace was seen at least three times at campaign functions, always accompanied by Cliff Carter, according to Lucianne Goldberg, who worked in the campaign press office. Goldberg recalled that Carter introduced her to Wallace at a hospitality suite at the Mayflower Hotel. ‘I just knew him and remember him because that was sort of what we were all about – remembering everybody you meet, because you never knew where they were going to end up,’ said Goldberg, who was 23 and known as Lucy Cummings back then. ‘We were all on the make, as young people around politicians are.’

“Goldberg, now a literary agent in New York, told the Observer she noticed Wallace ‘a couple of times’ at Johnson’s campaign headquarters at the Ambassador Hotel. ‘I’d be sitting at my desk and there’d be a lot of people milling around and I’d see him with his thumbs hooked in his belt the way those [Texas] guys do.’ Goldberg could not recall any conversation she had with Wallace, ‘other than, ‘wanna have a drink,’ that kind of thing, which I never did.’”

While I try to recreate the missing page, did I mention Inga Arvad, another NANA BABE.

Before being transferred to the South Pacific, JFK was assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI).

It was while assigned to ONI when Naval Ensign Kennedy met his sister's college roomate, Inga Arvad. She was Miss Denmark 1931 and attained notority for having "charmed Adolph Hitler and his cohorts so much that she gained access to their inner circle, and was Hitler's guest at the propaganda riddled 1936 Olympics in Berlin." (Philadelphia Inquirer, Oct. 10, 1991).

As a 1940 student at the Columbia School of Journalism (which later received funds from the CIA through the Catherwood Foundation), Avid lived with Kathleen Kennedy when they both worked at the New York Times Herald. When Kennedy was dating Arvad, she obtained a job with the North American News Paper Alliance (NANA). The ONI and the FBI both took interest in Kennedy's affair with Arvad and monitored their relationship because they suspected her of being a Nazi spy.

I think ONI bugged their Charleston, South Carolina hotel room, a tape, the existence of which resulted in JFK being booted out of ONI and sent to the front.

Since I long ago "corrected" another in regards to LHO's military record, I will again repeat it here in order that hopefully somewhere down the line-of-time, it will eventually become the corrected facts.

1. LHO WAS NOT given an HONORABLE DISCHARGE from the USMC upon his seperation from active duty military service.

He was in fact given an HONORABLE DISCHARGE from Active Duty!

At that point in time, each male citizen of the US had a 6-year military obligation which required a minimum of 2-years of actual active duty.

This 2-year obligation could be served in a variety of means, which generally constituted:

A. 6-years service in the National Guard in which one actually served 2-years* of actual duty through attendance at week-end drills and summer camp. (*Includes 8-weeks basic training and 8-weeks MOS qualification training)

B. 6-years service in the "Active Reserve" (now called "Ready Reserve) in which one served a total of 2-years* of actual duty through call-up training and 30-days per summer at summer camp drills. (*Includes 8-weeks of basic training and 8-weeks of MOS qualification training)

C. Being drafted and thereafter serving 2-years of active for duty assignment and thereafter being assigned to an "Inactive Reserve" unit for an additional 4-years of obligation.

D. Volunteering for active duty assignment and after release from active duty, completion of a total of 6-years of assignment by being assigned to an Inactive Reserve unit for the completion of 6-years.

2. LHO volunteered in the USMC for a total of a 3-year assignment, and although he received a slightly "early out" after having served slightly less than this 3-years, he nevertheless received an HONORABLE DISCHARGE from ACTIVE DUTY.

NOT an Honorable Discharge from the USMC!

3. Upon discharge from ACTIVE DUTY, LHO still had a military obligation which, due to his "early out", required that he be assigned to a RESERVE UNIT for the remainder of his 6-year obligation.

Therefore, LHO should have been assigned to an INACTIVE RESERVE unit of the USMC upon sepeartion from service.

4. HOWEVER! Through what appears as a typical military screw-up, LHO was, upon seperation from service, assigned to an ACTIVE RESERVE unit of the USMC.

When LHO failed to appear for duty with the unit (during scheduled drills, etc:) he was thereafter considered as being AWOL, and 30-days thereafter, considered as a deserter.

This is what gave the USMC the authority to conduct a summary hearing and thereafter give LHO a DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from the USMC.

Now!

Were I the USMC, and I erroneously gave someone a DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from service due to what is absolutely an apparant clerical error, and that someone thereafter got so pissed off that he shot the President of the US, then I too would attempt to blame the reason for the USMC clerical screw-up and Dishonorable Discharge on some "trumped-up" claim that said discharge was given as a result of the individual having gone to the Soviet Union.

Had LHO obtained the services of virtually any "Outhouse Attorney" who was familiar with military service, then the USMC would have had to correct his Discharge from the USMC to an HONORABLE DISCHARGE.

So! For the "History Books", the DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE of LHO from the USMC was a completely illegal and unjustified action on the part of the USMC, and was based on an administrative error which the USMC themselves created.

P.S. There are many in all branches of service who have received an "HONORABLE DISCHARGE" from active duty only to thereafter receive an DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from their respective branch of service, due to criminal actions committed after release from Active Duty service.

When LHO failed to appear for duty with the unit (during scheduled drills, etc:) he was thereafter considered as being AWOL, and 30-days thereafter, considered as a deserter.

This is what gave the USMC the authority to conduct a summary hearing and thereafter give LHO a DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from the USMC.

Were I the USMC, and I erroneously gave someone a DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from service due to what is absolutely an apparant clerical error, and that someone thereafter got so pissed off that he shot the President of the US, then I too would attempt to blame the reason for the USMC clerical screw-up and Dishonorable Discharge on some "trumped-up" claim that said discharge was given as a result of the individual having gone to the Soviet Union.

Had LHO obtained the services of virtually any "Outhouse Attorney" who was familiar with military service, then the USMC would have had to correct his Discharge from the USMC to an HONORABLE DISCHARGE.

So! For the "History Books", the DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE of LHO from the USMC was a completely illegal and unjustified action on the part of the USMC, and was based on an administrative error which the USMC themselves created.

P.S. There are many in all branches of service who have received an "HONORABLE DISCHARGE" from active duty only to thereafter receive an DISHONORABLE DISCHARGE from their respective branch of service, due to criminal actions committed after release from Active Duty service.

1. At the time of the bar ruckus in which LHO assaulted a superior grade Enlisted, he had applied for an extension of his tour of duty in Japan, which would have effectively consumed all of the remainder of his term of service obligation.

This application for extension of "Tour of Duty" was approved, and it was only after he was Court-Martialed and served brig time for the offense that he then put in a request for cancellation of the extended tour of duty.

2. Assignment to an "Active Reserve" status automatically means that one must report to the unit a wide variety of information, as well as be available for active duty "drill's" as well as Summer Camp.

One could get away with not reporting all of the various required information. However, when one does not show up for any scheduled drills and/or Summer Camp, then a Dishonorable Discharge is imminent.

That is what they do to National Guardsmen who do not show up for weekend drills and/or Summer Camp as well.

Had LHO been fully aware of the fact that he was assigned to an "Active/Ready Reserve Assignment", then he would have also known of the requirements to meet any drills and/or Summer Camp as well as the punative actions which would be taken should he not do so.

3. As anyone who has been drafted for two years into any branch of the Armed Services is aware, the "Normal" thing is that one is assigned to a "Standby Reserve" status upon seperation from Service.

Most unlikely considering that LHO was a complete NOTHING/Private/enlisted in the USMC and Francis G. Powers was an Officer in the United States Air Force.

LHO would have been issued an Active Duty USMC ID Card upon entry into service. This card would generally expire within 30-days after the expiration date of his term of service.

Any "Reserve" component ID Card would be issued by that Unit.

Merely because one has a "Military ID" does not mean that he can go hop on military aircraft throughout the world. Without Military Orders and/or Military Leave documentation, those who fly such military aircraft are quite reluctant to allow anyone who merely has an "ID" card to get on board.

Especially considering the number of phony ID cards floating around.

Mancusco of NYPD after his August 1963 arrest, there is the phone numbers for PJM and "Goldberg," who was PJM's editor at NANA. He worked under Ian Fleming, the European editor, whose immediate boss was Ernie Cuneo, the WWII OSS assistant to Roosevelt and Donovan.

Cuneo is memoralized as a character in Fleming's Diamonds Are Forever, the Las Vegas cab driver.
