The top cities of the Beat movement.  Proto-hippies.

In 1965 the San Francisco counter culture was LSD and free love, exemplified by the Jefferson Airplane.

In New York it was S/M and heroin, exemplified by the Velvet Underground.

The New York strain of the counter-culture had much better legs than their West Coast counterparts.

The Velvet Underground were followed by the New York Dolls who were followed by the Ramones.
