  9. From an article just posted by the New York Times: I believe that Jack Smith will file an appeal with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to force Judge Cannon to recuse herself from the case. Otherwise, the public will get the idea that the "fix" is in on the case based on the way the Clerk of the Court selected Judge Cannon. The clerk clarified another matter: whether Judge Cannon would continue to handle the case. Since news of Judge Cannon’s assignment emerged early Friday, observers have speculated that it could only be an initial assignment before being handed to another judge. But Ms. Noble confirmed that no court practice would return the case to be assigned to another judge. In short, Judge Cannon’s assignment is permanent unless she were to step aside.
  10. From today's New York Times article on Judge Cannon, the partisan Trump- supporter, who has been assigned the Classified documents case: Last fall, this reporter sought clarity on whether Judge Cannon’s involvement with the lawsuit meant she would be automatically assigned any indictment if it were brought in the Southern District of Florida. In email messages, the chief clerk of the court there, Angela Noble, wrote: “We do not assign related cases to the same judge. A related case will still be randomly assigned.” Still, the odds of an indictment being randomly assigned to Judge Cannon were low. There are 15 active Federal District Court judges in South Florida, along with 11 on senior status who are still assigned to hear cases but at a reduced workload‌. Ms. Noble did not immediately respond to an email seeking clarification of what happened.

  12. From today's Bloomberg.Com: For Timothy O’Brien, Trump’s indictment will test whether Republicans are on the side of law and order or if they remain “hostages to their own immorality and cowardice, and to Trump’s firm sway over about a third of the party’s voters.” The party’s core remains loyal to Trump, with deep allegiances to each other and a self-interest in fomenting anarchy and unrest for political purposes. “Given how swiftly some Republicans dismissed the severity and bona fides of the pending federal charges — and their behavior for years now — too many of them will continue to favor lawlessness,” Tim writes. “Attacking and undermining the Justice Department to protect Trump and their own prospects has been a core electoral strategy for Republicans.”
