Bill,

Here's some history on Barksdale AFB.

http://www.barksdale.af.mil/library/factsh...eet.asp?id=4409

From the above:

The renowned 2nd Bomb Wing transferred to Barksdale April 1, 1963 , from Hunter Field, Ga. taking over the B-52 and KC-135 mission from the 4238th Strategic Wing. From 1965 and into the 1970s, the 2nd Bomb Wing routinely deployed aircraft and personnel to Southeast Asia for "Arc Light" (B-52) and "Young Tiger" (KC-135) missions in support of the war in Vietnam.

-------------

More details can be found from that url. Not much about the early 1960's apart from what I quoted above.

-------------

Headquarters Air Force ordered the permanent designation of the group's history, awards and emblem bestowed on the wing April 1, 1963. On that same date, the wing moved to Barksdale from Hunter and took control of the B-52 and KC-135 aircraft assigned to the 4238th Strategic Wing.

In the early 1960s, 8th Air Force received the B-52 Stratofortress, KC–135 tanker, and Atlas and Titan intercontinental ballistic missiles.

the above from this url:

http://www.militarynewcomers.com/BARKSDALE/index.htm

-------------

In brief, it looks like this air force base was preparing for what it would need to do in SE Asia in a year or two.

Thanks Antti,

There seems to have been a lot happening in April, 1963.

I wonder if there's any connection between what they were doing at Barksdale and the SAC-AFB near Ft. Worth where they docked the AF1-2-3 - before flying to Love Field?

I recall the AF base commander there wouldn't open the base to civilians and spectators who wanted to greet the President and see him off to Dallas but reluctantly agreed.

What would the head of the SS in NO be doing at Barksdale unless he was investigating something? BK

Bill,

"shooting the breeze" with a buddy no doubt, probably someone he knew from when he was in the military himself. C'mon he works fro the government, couldn't be nothing more but a cover-up visit to claim for mileage and expenses to go see his buddies.

Okay, Check this out.

From this doc we learn that SAIC NO SS office John W. Rice at the time of the assassination is at the Special Investigations office at Barksdale Air Force Base in Northwest Louisiana.

He is notified by phone that Jack Martin has made some allegations about the accused assassin who had previously lived in New Orleans.

Currently home to the 8th Air Force - given the mission to fight war in cyberspace, was Gen. LeMay's old outfit.

Was Barksdale home of 8th AF in 1963 and does anybody know what they were doing there at that time? Thaks - BK

You hear it so often......QUI BONO ???

Attempt to blow up Barksdale AFB (pre 911 info) http://davidhuntwork.tripod.com/id49.html Cheney sends Bush to Barksdale ??? see below

9:55 a.m: President Bush boards "Air Force One" bound for Washington.23 Following what was as a "false report" that Air Force One would be attacked, Vice-President Dick Cheney had urged Bush (10:32 a.m.) by telephone not to land in Washington. Following this conversation, the plane was diverted (10:41 a.m.) (on orders emanating from Washington) to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. A couple of hours later (1:30 p.m.)

COLONY BEACH ATTEMPT on BUSH ??

Bush’s appearance at the Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, on September 11, 2001 had been in the planning stages since August [booker web site], but was only publicly announced on the morning of September 7. [White House, 9/7/01] Later that same day, 9/11 hijackers Mohamed Atta and Marwan Alshehhi traveled to Sarasota and enjoyed drinks and dinner at a Holiday Inn only two miles down the sandy beach from where Bush was scheduled to stay during his Sarasota visit. [Longboat Observer, 11/21/01, Washington Post, 1/27/02]

The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort, where Bush stayed the night before 9/11. [Colony Resort web site]

On the night of September 10th, Bush stayed at the Colony Beach Resort—“an upscale and relatively pristine tropical island enclave located directly on the Gulf of Mexico, a spindly coral island… off Sarasota, Florida.” [AP, 07/29/01] Zainlabdeen Omer, a Sudanese native living in Sarasota, told the local police that night that someone he knew who had made violent threats against Bush was in town and Omer was worried about Bush’s safety. The man was identified only as “Ghandi.” A police report states the Secret Service was informed immediately. [Hopsicker, 7/22/02]

After a private dinner with various Florida politicians (including his brother Jeb) and Republican donors, Bush went to bed around 10:00 p.m. [sarasota Magazine, 11/01, Washington Post, 1/27/02] Surface-to-air missiles were placed on the roof of the resort [sarasota Herald-Tribune, 9/10/02], and an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) plane circled high overhead. [Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism—From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 25] It’s not clear if this type of protection was standard for the president or whether security was increased because of possible threats.

An Assassination Attempt?

Bush awoke a little before 6:00 a.m. on September 11, pulled on shorts and an old T-shirt and laced up his running shoes. [CBS, 11/1/02] At 6:30 a.m., Bush, a reporter friend, and his Secret Service crew took a four-mile jog in the half-light of dawn around a nearby golf course. [Washington Post, 1/27/02, Washington Post, 09/11/01]

At about the same time Bush was getting ready for his jog, a van carrying several Middle Eastern men pulled up to the Colony’s guard station. The men said they were a television news crew with a scheduled “poolside” interview with the president. They asked for a certain Secret Service agent by name. The message was relayed to a Secret Service agent inside the resort, who hadn’t heard of the agent mentioned or of plans for an interview. He told the men to contact the president’s public relations office in Washington, DC, and had the van turned away. [Longboat Observer, 9/26/01]

===

Nearly three hours after the incident at the Colony, another Longboat Key resident reported a run-in with possibly the same men. At about 8:50 (when reports of the first World Trade Center crash were first broadcast), while standing on the Sarasota bay front waiting for the presidential motorcade to pass by, this man saw two Middle Eastern men in a dilapidated van “screaming out the windows ‘Down with Bush’ and raising their fists in the air.” The FBI questioned the man, but it’s not known if this was the same van that had visited the Colony. [Longboat Observer, 9/26/01]

Later on the morning of September 11, the Secret Service searched a Sarasota apartment looking for further corroboration of Zainlabdeen Omer’s report of an assassination threat. Three Sudanese men were questioned for about ten hours. The Secret Service also raided a beauty supply store in Sarasota, whose owner, identified as “Hakim,” told the agents that “Ghandi” was a member of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army, a group fighting against the fundamentalist Muslim government in Sudan. [Hopsicker, 7/22/02]

Monica Yadav of Sarasota’s ABC News 40 reported that a few days after the Secret Service visit, the beauty supply store was closed up and Hakim was long gone. Yadav also learned that Zainlabdeen Omer had suddenly quit his jobs and vacated his apartment. “All I know is he can’t leave town,” a friend of Omer’s told Yadav. “Omer got in a lot of trouble with the law.” The Special Agent in charge of the Presidential detail in Sarasota told Yadav that Bush was never in any danger and the various warnings and possible terrorist connections were all “just a coincidence.” [Hopsicker, 7/22/02] Yet, as we will see below, there are more details of a threat against Bush before he left Sarasota.

Antti, He's the head of the NO SS office on official duty, hundreds of miles from his office in another part of the state, at an AF Base office of special investigations. What's he investigating?

I don't know and not speculating, just curious what this guy was working on when he was pulled off the case to take on the Martin/Ferrie/Oswald angle on the murder of the President.

Then he dissapears without testifying.

I don't think he was "shooting the breeze" with anybody.

And Steve, Thanks for the heads up on the 911 Barksdale connection. Got it.

...Besides the documents from Oswald In New Orleans, there is a mention of John W. Rice in Pat Lampert's book about Jim Garrision in which she mentions that once David Ferrie was suspected as being involved in the assassination, JWRice drove to Ferrie's apartment to find newsmen already there. So he must have known where it was.

Vince Palamara, between gushing over Dale Meyers' flawed With Malice and what Bugliosi has to say about him, mentions JWR in his Survivor's Guilt Appendix B, saying:

Under New Orleans :

"Rice, John W. SAIC; took part in third Secret Service school held in November and December of 1954; pictured on p. 62 of AFAUSSS Book (1991)."

Does anybody have any info on the Secret Service school and/or the photo of Rice in AFAUSSS?

Thanks,

BK

Unfortunately, we Education Forum members seem to post here, motivated by various, and I fear, sometimes conflicting agendas.

Do you think you can ask some of your excellent contacts in the SS if they knew SAIC New Orleans John W. Rice, what he was doing in the course of the investigation, what became of him, and why he wasn't interviewed or questioned by anyone?

Thanks for sharing all your work,

Bill Kelly

5 more JFK assassination/ MEDICAL EVIDENCE/ Secret Service videos.....

Vince,

As the expert in these matters, I am sure you are familiar with the report that John W. Rice was at Barksdale AFB near Shreveport, LA when he was contacted by the Dallas Secret Service office and instructed to proceed to Goldonna, LA to investigate the initial JFK shooting suspect, Jack W. Martin.

Can you verify whether or not November 22 was also Rice's wife's birthday, and if it was, how that detail may have played into Rice making that 325 miles, each way, trip to Barksdale. Did Rice's older daughter and her husband, you probably know their names, so I won't post them here, reside at that time. in Leesville, LA,

4066975556_3dd1ec33b9.jpg

a town south of Shreveport, next to the Ft. Polk, US Army base, lying along the shortest route from New Orleans, or did the young couple move there shortly after? Did Rice stop at his daughter;s home in Leesville, before or after his official stops at Barksdale or at Ladonna, or meet with his daughter or son-in-law after he heard the news about JFK? Did Rice perhaps bring his wife along on that trip north, to visit with her daughter on the occasion of Rice's wife's brithday? Is it possible Rice had planned to pick his daughter up in Leesville and bring her back to New Orleans to celebrate her mother's birthday?

If John W. Rice recounted his recollections to you of that fateful afternoon, I'm assuming all of the family related details that would jog the memory of any of the agents you've interviewed would have come into play. How did you determine (prioritize) which agents were most important to devote the time to attempt to obtain information from, or about, or is the assassination of president Kennedy simply subordinate to your interest in researching and writing about the Secret Service personnel?

Vince, did you attempt to interview John W. Rice or his wife? If not, who are the other agents you asked for details they might offer related to Rice and his career? When do you recall becoming aware of Adele Edisen's claims of being interviewed by John W. Rice in his office on November 24, 1963? Did Adele's assertions influence you in any way to pursue details related to the career and other background of John W, Rice?

Were you aware that John W. Rice had served on the White House residence protection detail in the early 50's? Where have you published those details?

Hi, everyone. Sorry: as I have told Bill over the years (hi, Bill!) what i have on John W. Rice is what I have in my book/ online...not much! :o)

Thanks for that tidbit Michael,

And Dan,

FYI, Henry Pleasants was an OSS officer from Philadelphia who interrogated Gen. R. Gehlen. As a serious music critic who covered the Philadelphia Orchestra (Eugene Ormandy era), Pleasants became the CIA station chief in Bonn, Germany after the war and continued to write music reviews, including the book The Agony of Modern Music in which he puts forth the proposition that classical music is dead and that jazz is the new classical music.

I also write music reviews on occassion:
