Vince Palamara
First of all, nobody and nothing is perfect. That said, I am a huge fan of David Talbot's books and I believe strongly that his latest book, THE DEVIL'S CHESSBOARD, is a must-have, must-read game changer. Excellently written and tremendously researched. Keeping this into focus, on pages 493-494, Talbot notes that LBJ hosted Dulles at his Texas ranch during the summer of 1963 and mentions what I thought was a debunked notion: the photo of LBJ and Lady Bird smiling at Dulles...wasn't that a file photo from 1960 and did this Dulles visit to the LBJ Ranch take place, photo or no photo? Larry Hancock
Yes Vince, I'm afraid that is an oldie that has been debunked over and over...its a stock photo put into a contemporary news article on the Texas trip. Several of us have done the homework on that, David Lifton was very likely first and there is no doubt about it. I've even seen the full set of ranch photos taken during Dulles 1960 visit...by a free lance author that got quickly kicked off the ranch for some unflattering snaps of Lady Bird and a horse... Vince Palamara
Thanks, Larry! The bottom line: WAS there even a Dulles/LBJ meeting in the summer of 1963?
Larry Hancock
Well I can say I've reviewed Johnson's daily appointment book and call log for that period and I certainly don't recall one, I think it would have caught my attention - and that's where I did catch the short meeting in Johnson's office that was pure political dynamite when he was being investigated for Baker's influence pedaling. Of course Dulles could always have dropped by Johnson's house in DC informally or something like that but I don't think there is one on the record. In any event, there definitely was not one at the Ranch, Johnson's time there is well tracked...
Karl Kinaski
Talbot seems to assume (with HSCA Robert Blakey) that the plan of the plotters was to shoot Oswald at the vicinity of the crime, in front of the TSDB , but something went wrong...IMO a wrong assumption. BTW: Blakey never was a real researcher... KK
Karl Kinaski
BTW If I remember correctly, this scenario (Plotters, who wanted Oswald dead at the TSDB) is what David Lifton believes in, in his forthcoming book FINAL CHARADE.
