Michael Kalin
No conflation, just a recognition of the uselessness of subjecting Tatum's statements to a minute scrutiny and drawing conclusions therefrom until it can be established that he was actually at the scene when the murder occurred. The reason he gave Moriarty for failing to "report this information to the authorities" was imbecile ("I could not see what I could contribute"). Greg Lowrey, a knowledgeable person, had great doubt that Tatum witnessed the murder. See McBride's Into The Nightmare, page 498. Gerry Down
When was the first time Tatum told his story, either to an official body or to family or friends? Was it 1978? No evidence he had told anyone the story earlier than this? If the story only first emerges in 1978, then while he may well have been a witness, he may be getting his details mixed up and misremembering what he saw.
