Electronic Sleuth Described by Agents

Testimony of electronic devices for intercepting telephone calls, battering down apartment house doors and months of trailing suspects highlighted a federal hearing Tuesday for three alleged Dallas gamblers. John Ely Stone, his brother James Woodrow Stone and Isadore Miller have been charged with failure to register as gamblers, and failure to buy a federal gambling stamp.

As the hearing unfolded before US Commissioner Bill Atkins of Fort Worth, sitting in for vacationing Commissioner W. Madden Hill, three federal agencies were reported to have taken part in the investigation. Daily trailing of the three suspects began April 8, by agents of the Internal Revenue Service intelligence unit, the federal Alcohol Tax Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

IRS Agents James O Gann and Ken F. Slane and ATU Agent R.H. Krueger told of an electronic device hidden in a pay telephone booth near a Safeway Store at Villanova and Pickwick Lane to intercept telephone calls by John Stone to Las Vegas, Nevada. The officers sat in a car about a block away, and the transmitter picked up a conversation as Stone asked for the betting odds on various baseball games to be played that day and night plus the odds on the pitchers.

Slane led the raid Saturday on an apartment in the 4600 block of Lewis, where Miller was arrested Slane said there was no response to the doorbell and, after 15 seconds the door was smashed in with a sledge-hammer. He testified that the raiders confiscated numerous sheets of betting odds and apparent listings of betting, some of which he said Miller tore up but which the agents pieced together with tape. Agent E.T. Houston led a raid on an apartment in the 4500 block of Glenwood Lane where James Woodrow Stone was arrested.

Here too the door was bashed in he said when there was no answer to the door bell. He said he seized some papers burning in the commode and retrieved some of the ashes to offer as evidence. Here, Houston said were found basketball schedules and baseball betting odds and a list of bets in a paper under a throw rug in the den. There were names and telephone numbers listed.

Gann testified that two cars of agents curbed John Eli Stone on Commerce in front of the public library and found odds lists and betting records in his pockets. The agents said they seized nearly $5,000 in cash from the trio plus John Stones 1962 automobile. Defense attorney Charles Tessmer brought out in cross-examination of all witness that none had seen any of the men make or accept a bet on baseball or horses. Tessmer made a lengthy motion seeking dismissal of the charges on many grounds. He said search warrants were obtained by affidavits illegally obtained by intercepting long distance calls, that breaking down doors is illegal unless entrance is refused that none had seen any wagering and that the complaints alleged no offense.

Commissioner Atkins overruled the motion, held the three defendants for the grand jury and possible indictments and ordered the hearing resumed Tuesday. The men remained at liberty under $2000 bonds.

Only someone who is familiar with the backdrop of organized crime in Dallas circa 1963, can really appreciate the above.

It is fairly obvious? that the prosecution of these individuals AS CHARGED was probably not what they had in mind? But I suppose that will be a point of contention undoubtedly to someone. LOL.....No good deed goes unpunished....

While the Posner's, of the world seem to get into a tizzy, whenever anything is written that could tarnish the reputations of certain people, hopefully there is something called the "Big Picture" that may come to mind.

And pray tell, what is the big picture in this case? Information that is essential to solving what was once known as the Crime of the Century, is not in the hands of a select few individuals, a free people have the right to study the past, if only to learn from it.....if that rubs a few self appointed experts to insert themselves into every jot and tittle of every issue pertaining to said crime, that is also their right.....along the same lines, mainstream media can make anyone who asserts even some very basic realities, seem like a nut case....

Case in point...Try Jimmy Carter's recent interview discussing the fact that every rudimentary foreign policy decision re Israel has at least, occasionally shown overtones, in many American's minds of, indifference to the human rights of the Palestinian people, [indifference to suffering is a reality that politicians have fell back on for quite some time.] In America, the mass-media approach seems to be.....label said persons as anti-Semitic, even though [to bolster Carter's view....there is a body of writers who are very Jewish, who have been saying the very same thing, and,] which to boot has been discussed in the Israel media for gasp, quite some time. Yes, it is so much more convenient to label someone Anti-Semitic instead of actually doing something to make the world a better place or elevate media dialogue beyond the proclamations of ostensibly a meeting of the minds of illuminated circle jerks....

Ultimately the big picture is about the fact that corruption lowers everyones quality of life and that is EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS

Further elaborating on the big picture.....The illustrious mainstream media portrays an idealized version of America 2006 that is rooted in a illusionary world of everything is just fine, War in Iraq...Mission Accomplished!.....

[and] the evil Saddam Hussein.....the big bad man who started the New Pearl Harbor is gone away to eternity,

It [The dynamic of official news vs non-managed news] besides the fact that 'that is not going away' ultimately is a very real dynamic of the body politic reacting to a culture of corruption, the proverbial Rome burning while

everyone in charge is concerned with [maintaining] the status quo....Cherish your illusions.....

just don't read the warning label, you might find it 'upsetting.'
