The feeling within the Golden Corral at the Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon was just right for the upcoming Veteran’s Day.

Ray Stillwell is the pastor of Central Church of Christ. He is also retired from the United States Air Force as First Sergeant. He served some of his years detailing Air Force One during the presidency of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

He spoke of his extensive recollections of this time period including the precise knowledge that he had at the time. According to Mr. Stillwell, he knew “within five inches of exactly where the wheels of Air Force One were going to stop.”

On Nov. 22, 1963, the day of President Kennedy’s assassination, Mr. Stillwell was awaiting his return to the airport in Dallas, Texas when his company was made aware of the assassination.

They had come to Dallas in order for President Kennedy to make two announcements: “that the U.S. was pulling out of Vietnam and that he was running for a second term of presidency.”

This of course never happened as he was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963 while his car passed cheering crowds in the Dallas streets.

Mr. Stillwell said that the day seemed like an eternity, like watching a movie instead of real life. He said the day of the assassination was the only time that he saw then Vice President Lyndon Johnson pray.

When then Vice President Johnson arrived at the airport to board Air Force One “he hit the ground running.” According to Mr. Stillwell, that day was the only day that he ever observed him “scared out of his wits.”

Then Vice President Johnson was sworn in on Air Force One that day.

Some people believe that President Johnson was also a target of the assassination and that the shooter had thought that it was then Vice President Johnson in the car with President Kennedy.

Mr. Stillwell has always believed that “they thought they were shooting both the President and Vice President that day.”

Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy would not allow them to put the coffin in the belly of the airplane. She wanted it in the airplane where she could be with him through the flight.

After arriving back in Washington, D.C. he went on Air Force 2 to where they went back to Dallas to retrieve the guns involved in the assassination. The container holding the guns was handcuffed to Mr. Stillwell and another man in his company.

According to Mr. Stillwell, President Johnson often drank alcohol and was a very dominating person. He did not tolerate disloyalty.

All the individuals in the military detail within President Johnson’s term were sent to Vietnam when he left office.

Seven years from now, the report of Warren Commission, which was created to investigate the assassination of President Kennedy, will be opened to the public if efforts to stop it are not successful.

According to Mr. Stillwell, when this Warren Report becomes public there will be many surprises for the American public.

Mr. Stillwell also participated in the visit by the Emperor of Japan during President Nixon’s term. He said that was his favorite assignment that he had while in the Air Force.

Really? A new one on me. How does Stillwell know this when no one else did? JFK, in his Fort Worth speech, praised the defense efforts of companies in Texas.

I don't know who "some people" are, but that's another new one on me.

That would explain it. Stillwell believed.

Some people might also jump all over the word "they" here, instead of the entire sentence in context.

Was AF2 dispatched to Dallas? Would the FBI, who had taken control of the evidence, have this container handcuffed to Stillwell? Is he adding his own fictional account here? Can anyone else corroborate this? Somehow I doubt it.

Is this his opinion with no factual basis, or can he back up this statement with some evidence?

IMO a further impartial interview with Mr Stillwell is warranted before totally dismissing everything he said, but it sounds like he's trying to make a name for himself, more than likely after everyone on that plane died so they can't confirm what he said.

Was AF2 dispatched to Dallas?

IIRC, JFK and LBJ flew separately, even to Love Field. The only time I'm aware of JFK and LBJ on the same plane was on the return flight aboard AF1 from Dallas to DC.
