The uncle was Senator William Howell Smathers. Interesting to note is that one of the uncle's political sponsors was Joe Fay who before he was convicted of extortion, was the vice president of the International Operating Engineers Union.

William Howell Smathers, (January 7, 1891–September 24, 1955) was a United States Senator from New Jersey, serving from 1937 to 1943.

Smathers was born on a plantation near Waynesville, North Carolina. He attended public school and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

I'm going to try to find out more about Smathers in the 64 election. Having the convention in Atlantic City was part of the Kennedy program - with Sinatra, Skinny D'Amato (W. Virginia/Giancana/CalNeva) and the Rat Pack renominating their Prince on the home turf - but the spoils went to spoils - in Dallas.

When LBJ came to AC for the Convention where he was handed the nomination for the presidency, he was paranoid RFK would try to steal it from him at the last minute, and made precautinary moves against that happening. Especially after the tear jerker film on JFK.

In AC, LBJ stayed at the downbeach home of Carroll Rosenbloom, the owner of the Baltimore Colts football team, who is said to have died suspiciously while swimming in Florida. Rosenbloom was a BIG gambler and reputed to be Mike McLaney's partner in the Hotel National in Havava, having purchased the place from Meyer Lansky shortly before Castro came to town.

Rosenbloom also traded the Baltimore Colts even up for the LA Rams - later moved to St. Louis, while the Colts moved to Indiana - and then Rosenbloom mysteriously drowned on a deserted beach in Florida.

I'm pretty shore there was an Atlantic City connection between Smathers and Rosenbloom, and the Cuban-AC connection, but I can't put my finger on it, yet.

If I remember correctly, when Moe Dalitz wanted to sell his interest in the Hotel Nacional, McLaney wanted to buy it and Rosenbloom personally gave him something like $250,000 for it.

Also going by memory here, Rosenbloom was connected to Lansky through Max Orovitz (long time Lansky associate), both men being major stockholders of General Development Corporation.

One more curiosity, on November 29, 1963 when the Kennedy family all met for Thanksgiving in Hyannis Port, Stephen Smith flew in aboard a private plane owned by Rosenbloom.

The Florida White House or Winter White House was an informal name for a compound in Key Biscayne, Florida used by President Richard Nixon. Nixon purchased the first of his three waterfront homes, 500 Bay Lane, in 1969 from his former Senate colleague George Smathers and visited at least 50 times while in office from 1969 to 1974.

Nixon's compound placed him close to Bebe Rebozo who resided at 490 Bay Lane and to and industrialist Robert Abplanalp (inventor of the modern aerosol spray can valve). Bebe Rebozo, president/owner of the Key Biscayne Bank, was indicted for laundering a $100,000 donation from Howard Hughes to the Nixon election campaign.

Smathers was reported to be the only non-Kennedy/Bouvier family member to have been in the highly publicized 1953 wedding in Newport (RI) and was co-bestman with Robert Kennedy.
