Tom Hume was kind enough to direct me to this info on a previous thread.  See the entry for curtjester1 if the link takes you to a choice of posts:

"In the late 1940's and early 1950's millions of surplus military
rifles and pistols were imported into the United States, and Canada
and sold to sports enthusiasts.  The S&W pistol take from Oswald on
November 22 was imported from Europe by Empire Wholesale Sporting
Goods, Ltd., 300 Craig Street West, Montreal 1, Quebec, Canada.
Canadian law exempted wholesalers of surplus firearms from keeping a
record of the serial numbers of weapons that were exported from
Canada. U.S. Law, however, required that importers record the serial
numbers of all weapons imported into the country.

"On October 19, 1962 George Rose & Company (aka Seaport Traders), 1221
S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, placed an order for 500 pistols from
Empire.  The guns were sent from Montreal to Century Arms, Inc. of St.
Albany, Vermont and then re-shipped to George Rose & Company in Los
Angeles on January 3, 1963.  (The .38 Smith & Wesson revolver
allegedly used to kill Officer J.D. Tippit and a Mannlicher-Carcano
rifle (SN 2766) were shipped from Empire Wholesale Sporting Goods to
Century Arms.  The pistol was re-shipped to George Rose & Company in
Los Angeles while the Italian rifle was shipped to Aldens in Chicago)."

David,

it seems some of those Italian rifles ended up in the hands of the Cuban insurgents:

Quote

Another member of Rothman's arms ring, Frank Fiorini, testified under oath to Federal investigators that "Fidel told me in the mountains, here is what I have got ... all different types of foreign-made rifles - for instance like the Italian carbine, you shoot twice in rapid fire it would overheat and jam." A Journalist who later interviewed Fiorini noted that "many of the rifles" Fiorini "obtained" from a CIA-backed company for Fidel "were surplus 6.5 Millimeter Mannlicher-Carcanos," of the type found in the Texas School Book Depository after JFK's assassination."

Lamar Waldron - Ultimate Sacrfice, page 399

Ruby was involved with Rothman:

Quote

[...] "Rothman ... one of Santo Trafficante's closest associates, coordinated the smuggling of arms to Castro" [...] The available evidence indicates that Ruby helped in Rothman's gun smuggling."

page 398

Quote

In 1958, Ruby wrote a letter to the State Department's Office of Munitions Controls 'requesting permission to negotiate the purchase of firearms and ammunition from an Italian firm.'

page 394

Did this firm by any chance sell Mannlicher-Carcano rifles...?

Senator John F. Kennedy wanted to put a stop to all that:

Quote

An arms historian noted in 1958 "The Carcano was also receiving notice in the United States" because on May 13, 1958, Senator John F. Kennedy had introduced a bill in Congress that would have prohibited the importation into the United States of "firearms manufactured for the Armed Services of any Country". [...] JFK specifically mentioned Italian Carcanos [...]

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Maurice Phillips's book De Dallas à Montreal? He had a link to the PDF on his website but unfortunately it's no longer working. Any help would be appreciated.

Mathias,

You can get it on Amazon here:

https://www.amazon.com/Dallas-à-Montréal-montréalaise-lassassinat/dp/2761913108

'Course it's $300

Looks like you can get a copy from Abe Books in the U.K. for 32 pounds (about $42)

There are a couple of Libraries that have a copy, but I don't know of you can borrow a copy through Interlibrary Loan (e.g. Duke University)

"Century International Arms is an importer and manufacturer of firearms that is based in the United States. The company was founded in 1961 in St. Albans, Vermont, with offices in Montreal. In 1995 the company headquarters and sales staff moved to Boca Raton, Florida and to Delray Beach, Florida in 2004"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_International_Arms

As with a lot of what one finds on Wiki, information such as this should be approached with caution particularly if one seeks historical accuracy. While it is true that Century Arms was "founded" in St. Albans, Vermont, in 1961, the power behind this particular "throne" was William Sucher and Empire Wholesale out of Montreal. As I discovered, James Ouimet, who is referred to as the "President" of Century Arms was actually a figurehead put in place by Sucher and his associates to run Century on their behalf. Sucher had actually established a foothold in this same area years earlier, but got into trouble with the state and the ATAF for violating various arms/armaments statutes and got the boot out of the country. Century was his "back door" re-entry into the U. S. and the lucrative arms market he wished to exploit, which he obviously did with huge success. Members of Sucher's family continue to run Century out of Florida and have for decades.

The oft-repeated story that Sucher started out as a typewriter salesman is contrived, at best. William Sucher was, from the very beginning, involved in the importation and selling of arms and ammunition - the "typewriter"/office equipment business was merely a front, a company he started simultaneously with his first arms/armament company and one that he had registered in his wife's name. In excess of 10,000 pages of my 50,000+ pages I have acquired in my search for the true history of 6.5mm ammunition manufactured by the Western Cartridge Company deals with Empire Wholesale, Century Arms, et al., including all articles of incorporation for all of the companies generated by Sucher and his associates.

Dick Russell wrote that Richard Case Nagell said that he had gotten Oswald to mail-order the revolver from Seaport Traders under the auspices of participating in Senator Dodd's gun control program, FWIW.
