  1. I did a bit of quick internet reading on the character of the Fonz who apparently was only allowed at first to wear his leather jacket when he was seated on his motorcycle because the network thought a leather jacket sent the wrong message.

Other than that, I have no idea how his character ties into JFK.

For the bikini, it had a lot of media push in the early 60's in popular culture...but again that the closest I can get to media sending a deliberate message.

    So, yes, I am stumped.

  2. First of all, I want to say thanks for all the encouraging replies in this thread.  It seems like I'm not the only one who sometimes feels hesitant to ask a question or start a new discussion.

I have read some of the older threads which are a bit like walking through a time capsule where the debate is happening right there, in the moment, and you can still feel the energy these discussions must have generated.  I sometimes feel awkward throwing my new thoughts and/or questions into threads where it feels like research giants have already been, but I understand how it helps to have all the discussion for one subject in one thread.   So I can easily make new posts in old threads as long as that's okay.

One thing I think would be interesting would be an active book discussion thread.  I know there's an entire subsection of the overall forum for books, but it doesn't seem to generate a lot of posts.   This part of the forum seems to have the greater overall amount of traffic, though.

Anyway, back to the future of debate on the forum.   I agree that we need more conversation in here.  Having made the disclaimer here that I'm just an ordinary person who wants to know more (vs a researcher with decades of experience in this field), I'm happy to post my thoughts and questions.

  3. Thanks, Karl!

As for the three guys - Jarman, Norman & Williams - I imagine they would have been terrified of being blamed in 1963 Dallas.  But Bonnie Ray Williams had a shifting statement if I remember it correctly from discussions about the Prayer Man photo, didn't he?  And there was a lot of discussion about how long it took him to eat his chicken.  I've always felt that these three said whatever they felt the police wanted them to say.

Actually, when I first started reading up on the details of that day, I used to assume that Bonnie Ray Williams was somehow a lookout for somebody on the 6th floor since the timeline was awfully close for him to be eating there and then have LHO allegedly there to put the rifle together (minus any easily discovered fingerprints)...drag his boxes into place...do the shooting...and then manage to make it back downstairs in the official timeline without looking winded or disheveled.  But the only way that would work was if all three men were part of something fishy since they pretty much vouched for each other.

  4. -raises hand-

Sometimes I feel awkward posting a question or comment because I'm not an expert like so many people here.  I know that anything I'll post could have easily been already talked to death in a thread from years ago.  So even though I read at least one new book (new to me, that is) on this subject or a related one, I am often unsure if I should post my questions or keep them to myself because everyone else already knows all that stuff.

When are we going to get Cuban cigars in the US?  Can't Trump do that much for us?

That and the rest of the classified documents, right?   We're still waiting.  Anything still classified, well - why is that?  We used cameras back then & don't want to divulge how?  I think cameras have evolved since 1963.  Same goes for any form of electronic surveillance.  We all know that everyone spies on everyone.

I've been avoiding this thread because of the title, but I'm bored because there have been few posts to read here lately.  (Give me something to read, and I'll be quiet.)  The current administration is nothing like JFK, but I also know that nothing that I can say will sway those who hold the opinion that the current commander in chief is Jesus in human form.

  6. I did not have the opportunity to watch the second night of debates, but I scanned my Twitter feed to see what was trending.  I saw Ms. Williamson endlessly mocked, although I did not see that particular sentiment mentioned.

I sometimes wonder at myself when I find people that I might not otherwise consider an ally to say something with which I agree.  I believe that what happened to JFK matters today.  It matters to our country and government.  But otherwise, I am not sure that I can agree with Ms. Williamson's stated comments on other subjects.

  7. In her WC testimony, Wilma Tice said she did not know Jack Ruby prior to November 22.   This comes hard on the heels of asking how old her children are.  I'm not sure that the ages of her children are relevant to the WC's purposes, but I have never fully understood many of their lines of inquiry.

I think my favorite line in her testimony -

"Mr. Griffin:  Do you think you could have been mistaken about the man you saw?
Mrs. Tice:  It could have been somebody else that looked just like Jack, named Jack; yes."

Wilma Tice was clearly afraid of her husband, but given the fact that he didn't like her to leave the house might help explain that.  To me that gives her testimony more credibility.  She was risking a lot to say what she had seen.

  8. The photographer from the Dallas Morning News managed to get an amazing picture and is lucky to still be alive.

But, you're right.  The irony of the location and the situation is mind boggling.

  9. I'll second the thought that I hope all is well with Jim.

And now I'm curious about the interviews.  I have only recently started listening to things like this online.  I prefer to read than to listen, but I've had good success with a few other links posted on this forum.  I'll have to give it a go.  Thanks for the suggestion!

  10. I just finished reading Dorothy (St John Hunt) which includes a lengthy essay in the appendix by Skolnick.   The circumstances of the crash are filled with more questions than answers, although it appears that the FBI and the NTSB ruled the crash a result of pilot error.

One thing that caught my eye while reading about the crash was a discussion about some of the other people who also died on the plane.  On the plane were at least two people working for Northern Natural Gas Company in relation to charges dealing with John Mitchell doing something which financially benefitted the El Paso Natural Gas Company.  The reason this jumped out at me was because I remembered recently reading about the El Paso Natural Gas Company in another book.

In Spooks (Jim Hougan), there is a story about a dispute between the El Paso Natural Gas Company and the Tennessee Gas Transmission Company.  The story goes back and forth and mentions several members of the Maheu agency, past and present, including Joe Shimon, Johnny Frank and Tom LaVenia, who apparently worked on El Paso's behalf.

El Paso Natural Gas apparently had some very good contacts.

Stephanie, you do know PJM volunteered her services to the CIA well before she met Lee in Russia?  Somewhere there's a memo about their confidence in her to write what ever they wanted.

I remember reading in some book (darn, drawing a blank on the title right this second) that PJM was associated with the CIA while she was in Russia and interviewing LHO.  I don't know much about her life outside of that.

What would have happened to Ruth Paine had Oswald been killed within an hour of Kennedy?  Quaker Ruth would have harbored the family of the Kennedy-killing agent of the Communists.  How could she avoid serious suspicion?

This has always haunted me, and not just from the standpoint of Ruth Paine.  If LHO had been killed immediately after the assassination or before he could be booked into custody - how would this have changed the scenario?  Would the story have stayed exactly the same?

  13. I was thinking about the subject of Ruth Paine last night.  I just finished reading Marina and Lee by Priscilla Johnson McMillan which was the first book I've read which actually tackles Mrs. Paine outside of the facts reported in other works about the assassination.   I have Mrs. Paine's Garage as well, but I haven't read it yet.  I started to give it a go, but then I put it back on the shelf.  Maybe I'll tackle it next.

(For the record, the McMillan book did not convert me to the lone assassin theory, but I found it fascinating given the period when the book was being written and the version of Marina which it presents.)

Back to Mrs. Paine, though - she (as a character in a story) makes out very well in the McMillan book, presented as nearly perfect.  The only 'fault' which I remember it giving her is snooping once and making the copy of the letter which she said LHO wrote on her typewriter.  Granted, this is McMillan's version of Ruth Paine as a minor character in the overall story of Marina, but given Mrs. Paine's role in the life of the Oswalds during 1963, I think I would have liked a little more information here.

No.  Why?  Pay by the CIA, ONI and or the FBI?  Speculation but why necessary?  If there's nothing to hide...

I was thinking about his tax returns this weekend.  Since Marina didn't work outside the house, it wouldn't be a violation of her privacy to see LHO's tax returns for 1962 & 1963.  She wasn't a US citizen then, so no Social Security number even to black out.
