Wackenhut

Recommended Posts

For some reason the HSCA requested access to the CIA office of Security file on Wackenhut, a major national and now international security firm founded by ex FBI agents.

http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/...do?docId=104127

I'm wondering what's the connection to JFK assassination?

In any case, it's interesting to see how the CIA delt with such a company, and what they call "Operational Collaboration."

George R. Wackenhunt and Ed DuBois, both former FBI agents, started the company in Florida. Wackenhunt was originally from Philadelphia.

After they got into a fist fight, Wackenhut took over the company and renamed it. In 1964 Wackenhunt got major federal government security contracts, beginning with NASA and nuke sites, which are credited with his friendship with Florida Sen. Smathers.

Among those on the Wackenhut board are former CIA Rayburn and Bobby Inman, and DIA Gen. Carroll and former head of Secret Service Rowley, a virtual retirement home for high ranking intelligence officials.

Wackenhut commissioned John Minahan (Buddy Rich's biographer) to write his biography, The Quiet American.

Two Wackenhut connected spooks stand out - John Phillip Nichols and Bruce Berckmans.

J.P. Nichols set up a poker game on a Cabazon Indian reservation, was busted, and won in court, opening up the Indian reservations throughout the country to casino gambling.

Bruce Berckmans was Princeton and CIA Mexico City before joining Wackenhut, and had a mock funeral for his CIA alias Roger Merriweather Greever, then reported died for real. But he's still got an email and Coconut Grove phone number cgvizslas@juno.com 305-544-8081

Can anyone tell me why the HSCA would be interested in Wackenhut?

I'm sure I missed something.

There's one other tangential Wackenhut connection to the case:

One group who pops up is a Shreveport/New Orleans based detective agency named Southern Research Company. They appear in 1962-3 investigating David Ferrie on behalf of Esatern Air Lines. Then in late 1966, Jim Garrison appears to have engaged them to surveil Ferrie for a short time. But a few weeks later, they were engaged by the Shaw defense team and conducted numerous investigations on their behalf.

In an FBI memo, SRC is referred to as Wackenhut, as if the two were interchangable. I suspect this was just an erroneous assumption by the FBI, but I'm not sure. I contacted both SRC and Wackenhut, and they both deny ever being connected.

In 1956, a former FBI SA named A. Harry Roberts formed General Investigations and Security Corp in Shreveport. On 12/2/58, Roberts joined with other former SAs and former NOPD officer Joe Oster to form SRC in Shreveport. They grew to open offices in Houston (1960), New Orleans (1962-3), Baton Rouge (1963) and Lake Charles (1965). When the New Orleans office was chartered on 8/26/63, the listed officers were Roberts, Edward E, Parent, Shirley Riggs and Charles R. Carson.

Appendix #7 in Maury Island UFO: The Crisman Conspiracy (Kenn Thomas, IllumiNet Press, 1999) is an interview Kenn Thomas did with Michael Riconosciuto on February 10, 1996.

(from page 282)

Michael Riconosciuto: …Now Fred (Crisman) was very, very close to George Wackenhut.

Kenn Thomas: I don’t know if that’s been established before.

MR: Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I’ve known of it since 1963, maybe the first time I ever saw them together. Do you know who Chuck Emmert is?

KT: I haven’t heard the name yet, no.

MR: OK. His mother was a wealthy Florida socialite who financed George Wackenhut when he originally started Wackenhut.

KT: Is that a name that I could do a Lexis/Nexus search on?

MR: I doubt it, He managed to stay pretty buried, although his mother—I can’t remember her first name—but she was big in south Florida, with anybody in social circles down there would be able to steer you to her…

Cheri Seymour in "The Last Circle" wrote in depth about Wackenhut, PROMIS, et al...a pretty good read...

The Last Circle is an EXCELLENT book which I recommend to everyone. I have had some contact with Cheri, and am working on a follow up to her investigation of The Octopus. After working on it for 12+ hours a day for more than a year, I am taking a brief break from active research. I hope after she finishes her current book project, The Coup, that she will have time and energy to be part of the forum.

You guys beat me to recommending this book, and researches into the Wackenhut-Promis connection. I'd be most interested in seeing continuum research on Wackenhut from the Kennedy through GHWB administrations

Wackenhut, like the CIA, is too covert and far-reaching to produce a single comprehensive tome on it; but I hope that one of the books I am working on, tentatively titled The Cabazon Connection, will elaborate on Wackenhut and the connections reaching from Trafficante, Watergate, the JFK assassination, PROMIS (and the associated coups), Iran-Contra, Usama Bin Laden, FOIMS, money laundering and drug running etc. Due to the humongous amount of data to go through and my work on the multi-volume Covert History, I can't predict a completion date for the project, but in the meantime I'm happy to answer any questions that I'm able to.

You can also find a (still small) collection of Wackenhut related government documents here.

I believe that most or all of those are available on the Scribd link I posted, in addition to some other documents. If you don't have an MF account, you can download the documents from Scribd in PDF format.

When I get back to the US, I'll go through my files and scan the news articles I have on Wackenhut and post them as well. I'll try to dig through my electronic archives here in Panama and post what I have, but since the insurrection just resumed and people have been killed in the capital, I do not know how much time I will have available. My hands may be full until after things have settled down.

Would posts on the insurrection and attempts to remove Martinelli from power be appropriate to any of the forums here?

NEW YORK TIMES

George Wackenhut, 85, Dies; Founded Elite Security Firm

By JENNIFER BAYOT

Published: January 8, 2005

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/08/business/08wackenhut.html?_r=1

George R. Wackenhut, a former F.B.I. agent who built the Wackenhut Corporation into an international security firm that promoted the use of private guards at prisons, airports and nuclear power plants, died on Dec. 31 at his home in Vero Beach, Fla. He was 85.

The cause was heart failure, said his daughter, Janis Wackenhut Ward.

From the McCarthy era on, as America's appetite for security escalated, Mr. Wackenhut persuaded thousands of communities and government agencies to put private guards in public jobs, an idea law enforcement officials had long resisted.

Started in 1954 as a three-man detective agency in Miami, the struggling company turned to providing guard services to stay afloat and later earned contracts with Lockheed Martin and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. To impress potential clients, Mr. Wackenhut dressed his guards in helmets and paratrooper boots, and he recruited former members of the C.I.A., the F.B.I. and elite military forces to join management and the company's board.

Over the next four decades, Wackenhut guarded corporate buildings during labor strikes, managed security for airlines at nearly 90 airports and supplemented municipal services like firefighting and emergency medical services in several small communities. Its guards patrolled the Atomic Energy Commission's nuclear test site in Nevada and a handful of American embassies.

But the company's expansion into prisons and other correctional operations in the 1980's became its most profitable move. It was one of the first private security firms hired by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and has since received federal contracts from the United States Marshals Service and the immigration and customs enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security.

The privatization of prisons has had its critics, however, and Wackenhut's guards have been accused of abusing inmates in Florida, Texas and Louisiana. The Wackenhut Corrections Corporation, the company's prisons subsidiary, now manages more than 40,000 prison beds , mostly in the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

As his company grew, Mr. Wackenhut recruited prominent directors like Clarence M. Kelley, former head of the F.B.I.; James J. Rowley, former director of the Secret Service; and Frank C. Carlucci, former defense secretary and former C.I.A. deputy director. Before Ronald Reagan appointed him director of central intelligence, William J. Casey was Wackenhut's outside legal counsel. Such connections fueled speculation that the company was working with the C.I.A., a relationship that Mr. Wackenhut denied.

Mr. Wackenhut, outspoken in his conservative politics, was occasionally seen as overly zealous in his investigations. In 1967, when Gov. Claude R. Kirk Jr. of Florida appointed him chief of a private police force to investigate organized crime, Mr. Wackenhut was criticized for saying that he and his officers would not limit themselves to suspected criminals but would "investigate everyone and anyone who needs investigating."

The police force was short-lived, but the company's tactics created a dispute again in 1991, when a Congressional inquiry found that it had spied on an environmental advocate by installing miniature cameras in his hotel rooms and taking documents from his home.

George Russell Wackenhut was born in Philadelphia on Sept. 3, 1919. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University. He served in the Army during World War II.

He joined the F.B.I. in 1951 as a special agent in Atlanta and Indianapolis and tracked down check forgers and Army deserters. He left three years later to join three other former agents in starting a detective agency that he later bought from his partners and renamed the Wackenhut Corporation. His son, Richard R., took over the company in 1986.

In addition to his daughter, Janis, of Miami and his son, Richard R., of Jupiter, Fla., Mr. Wackenhut is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Following my maxim that regarding the JFK Assassination, there is no such thing as too many facts.

If anyone has a copy of the 1971 Personalities of the South, it has a very detailed, more or less

curriculum vitae on Mr Wackenhut.
