Robin,

There are DOD US Army After Action Reports - From the Military District of Washington - that detail to the minute what they did and how they did it. It was a secret military operation from the Get-Go, and is mentioned in the HSCA Reports.

They also removed young Patrick from his grave and moved him as well.

Whenever someone snickers at the idea of the JFK being exhumed and reburried and scoff at the idea, I tell them it's already happened.

And while it's hard to believe it happened at all, one of the reasons that it was kept secret and not mentioned in the papers until after the fact (although one Washington Post reporter sniffed it out), was because the District Attorney in New Orleans had a sitting grand jury that, if it knew the body of their victim was to be dug up, would have legally requested a new, forensic autopsy be performed, which would have settled many legal questions right off the bat.

There is also the question of whether RFK put JFK's brains back in the casket, which is dealt with in the HSCA reports.

And David,

I liked your Hiku so much I tried to find an appropriate one, or make one up, but then Sun Tzu said to me:

sudden attack is coming."

Bill,

The newspaper accounts mention the Army Corps of Engineers in 1963, and extra MP's guarding the closed cemetery gates, during the December, 1963 night burial of the two infants. Arlington is a military cemetery, everything that happened on the night of Tuesday, March 14, 1967, was preannounced, so the press could be assumed to be watching for a reburial every night after the October 18, 1966 press reports of the coming night reburial. The press watch would have invreased by late February, 1967, because of the information in the Army Corps' October 19, 1966 "postponed until spring" announcement.

There had been friction between the military and Jackie:

I'm saying they had a reinterment of JFK and Patrick in the middle of the night, a military operation that was kept secret, and that a WP reporter was arrested for trying to find out what was going on, and at the same time there was a sitting grand jury in New Orleans investigating JFK's murder.

What's the argument again?

I don't question anything you've posted other than it was a routine reinterment.

I can't find the Army After-Action Report on line, but I have a hard copy around here somewhere. And the WP reporter's story says a lot.

Thanks, Robin.

Bill,

You posted an impression, to me, anyway, that the military or other PTB "blindsided" Jim Garrison and his grand jury by exhuming and reburying JFK's body iwth no public, advance notice. You give me the inpression that these authorities acted with the appearance that they were trying to hide something sinister from the public.

My reaction, which I provide support for, is that nothing could be further from the truth. There was public notice beforehand, even advising that a spring reburial would take place, and that it would happen at night, when Arlington Cemetery was closed.

This information was published as late as in late November, 1966, and the event happend on March 14, 1967. If I have it wrong what point were you trying to make? If Garrison wanted to exhume JFK's body, he had advance notice that there was a plan "in the spring", to do just that. The rest of it seems related to consideration of the wishes for privacy during the reburial, coming from JFk's widow and family.

I visited the original, temporary JFK grave and memorial in mid 1966. I was a witness to the fact that one had to wait in a line several minutes long before passing in front of the grave and eternal flame:

Hi Tom,

Well, they also told JFK he was going to get wacked if he went to Dallas and he went and he got wacked, but they killed him in front of hundreds and filmed it for posterity, but the military holds a secret, dark of the night reinterment, even if at the bekoning of the Kennedy family, a secret night time military-religious ceremony is not routine.

While I certainly don't want to give the wrong impression, I don't know that Garrison knew they were going to dig up the body and move it, or that he read the same newspapers you do, or had access to the news net you have. Of all the things written about Garrision, someone must have asked why he didn't ask the grand jury to order a proper forensic autopsy, certainly within the realm of a grand jury's jurisdiction in the case of a suspicious death. Maybe he knew and just didn't want to go up against the Kennedy family?

I don't usually agree with Gus Russo, but his description of the reinterment is the way I remember it, and he too makes reference to the minute by minute aftar-action report that is available, but not apparently on line. And in that AAR they mention the fact they arrested a WP reporter for trying to get the story on what was happening. Then, he goes right to Jim Garrision, and goes into what he was doing and how the Kennedy's were preparing to oppose him. So I'm not the only person to make this connection.

Now this thread will not end before the minute-by-minute After Action Report is posted, and the story of the arrested reporter is further reviewed, because I know that something else was going on and it was not just a normal reinterment.

I know of a number of other reinterments, and not one was done in secret, in private, in the dead of night, - John Paul Jones, Mrs. Stephen Decatur, and the one going on now with the pilot from the first Gulf War recently discovered in the desert, and they all were accompanied by official ceremonies, with full military honors, in broad daylight and in full public view.

So in my mind, this was not a normal reinterment.

And why didn't Garrison ask for a forensic autopsy while the body was being reinterred?

Is that what the argument is about?

And thanks to Robin, Anthony and Denis for the photos and calling attention to this event.

And it looks like you got the Army After Action Report there too.

I didn't look at every photo but there are a few that seem to have what Gus Russo says is a small box laying next to the hole that may contain JFK's brains. - BK

Gus Russo Brothers in Arms The Secret War Against Castro and the Death of JFK p. 405

http://books.google.com/books?id=7Q87Rrxyh...lt&resnum=1 - v=onepage&q=&f=false

…on November 24, 1963, President Kennedy’s lot in the Arlington National Cemetery had been set aside “in perpetuity” – reserved forever in the honor of his memory, as Cemetery officials would tell visitors. He was buried in Lot 45, Section 30 on the afternoon of the following November 25th, when the “eternal flame” was lit. Work on a permanent site 20 feet away began soon thereafter, and would be completed four months after the re-interment – in July 1967.

Now it was time to re-bury the 35th President in that new site, together with the bodies of his two infant children. But, as if the absence of mystery could not be tolerated in any aspect of the Kennedy family history, something puzzling occurred. 41

Before the workman started their excavation, they were startled to witness what had all the appearances of a paramilitary operation. Some 300 military personal arrived and closed Arlington National Cemetery to the public, leaving out all unauthorized persons. An Army road-block shut down Arlington Memorial Bridge. The Military District of Washington established a command post at the guard house near the grave sites. A 50-man reserve troop stood by for summoning on short notice. Meanwhile, troops ringed the area, which had been screened by canvas and open to only “key personnel” with “a specific job.”

The detailed paperwork for these maneuvers was reminiscent of a military operation – which, in fact, it was. A handwritten note from the Army General Counsel to a Deputy Secretary of the General Staff noted that Secretary of Defense McNamara wanted an “hour by hour detailed schedule” of what had taken place at the Cemetery. It also included an order that the crane, trucks and other equipment of the firm responsible for the work bear no identifying tags. And memorandum after the memorandum repeated the order that “all public will be clear of the cemetery prior to re-interment.”

The March afternoon had been cool. By 6 p.m., it was growing dark. Ten minutes later, the mystery deepened: cemetery workers were startled to see two members of the official party arrive. Why now? Surely these movers and shakers, Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, hadn’t come merely to check on the preparations for the following day? 42

Minutes after the powerful Senator and Secretary reached the site, the puzzled work crew was directed to break ground. A tractor and crane moved into position inside the canvas, where the tractor drive switched to his backhoe levers. Actually, the crew consisted of only two men – the tractor driver and the skillfull crane operator. The commander of the 1st Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division, who was in charge of the operation, was much impressed by the skill of the workmen, who “seemed like artists with their equipment.” With a single swoop, the backhoe operator scraped to within an inch of the vault, without touching it. Soon, the crane operator lifted it up” as if it were a precious cargo, and transferred it from the old grave site to the new. 43

Senator Robert and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara watched the funeral ballet in silence. At 7 p.m., Senator Edward Kennedy arrived, accompanied by Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston and a priest named McGuire – both of whom were scheduled to bless the graves of the president and his two children the following day.

Considering that future researchers would note the disappearing of President Kennedy’s preserved brain from the National Archives, the proceedings possibly take on an added significance. Recall that virtually all of the evidence points to Bobby’s control over this material, and the brain still inventoried in 1965, the re-interment became the prime opportunity for a simultaneous re-burial of JFK’s brain. Interestingly, in several newly-surfaced photos of the late-night operation, a small box appears by the Kennedy graveside, at the feet of Cardinal Cushing (see photo spread).

Just before the first shovel of earth was thrown on the vault in its new setting, Bobby Kennedy took a Kennedy half-dollar from his pocket, used it to scrape some earth from the concrete vault, and tossed the coin into the new grave. At 8:45 p.m., the mourners departed the property. But by 11 p.m., they returned – this time, RFK was accompanied by his wife, his brother Ted, Warren Billings, and Jacqueline Kennedy. They remained at the site until just before midnight. They would return in the morning for the actual re-interment proceedings.

BOBBY AND GARRISON

After the re-interment, Robert Kennedy continued to monitor and react to the potentially troublesome Garrison “probe.” As Bobby well knew, it could turn up connections between Oswald and Cuba. And it was just two short conceptual steps from Cuba to the Cuban Project, and from the Cuba Project to him. In fact, Garrison would eventually try to implicate Bobby, but on the wrong counts, and with little success……

Somewhere in all the reams of writing and pictures - little of which I did not borrow from libraries - I have seen before a clear shot of RFK with the box at his feet, and then another of Bobby and Cardinal Cushing standing with it on grave edge between them. Maybe these shots are elsewhere on the web.
