Answering to Were the RFK and JFK assassinations related?

Recommended Posts

On the JFK Lancer site, there is a document entitled Angleton Assassination attempt on Castro aka ANGLETON.DOC.

It is a very significant document which contains snippets of information related to various topics, the chief of which is a

circa 1967 communication between William Harvey, then retired and out to pasture and Johnny Roselli.

A key moment in this reconstruct, occurs when Rosselli tells Harvey about a leak in 1963, which was traced to the

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The leak concerned Jimmy Hoffa, indirectly and corroborating the information

Rosselli mentions were "newspaper clippings" from a Chicago newspaper. These two sources of information pertained

to three gangsters, of which at least two operated casino's in Cuba before Castro replaced Fulgencio Batista as the head

of that impoverished nation. The three individuals were Russell Bufalino, Salvatore Granello and James Plumeri.

It is alleged that the three were working with the CIA at the time of the Bay of Pigs as spotters.....

Those intimately familiar with the 1967 Inspector Generals Report, and the lesser known unredacted version, might realize

the importance of the above information.

Russell Bufalino, was Jimmy Hoffa's right hand man and is the chief subject of the very compelling book,

I Heard You Paint Houses.

The information which follows, is an unredacted version of one of the documents the ANGLETON.DOC was constructed from......

It will be up to the reader whether the information which follows answers the question, which is the title of this thread.

But I do propose it is not dull reading.

MEMO - SUBJ: Possible Questionable Activity

1. Summary: In 1963, A CIA Agent was used in support of an FBI investigation of Jimmy Hoffa.

PARAGRAPH 4 requests your assistance.

2. Background: On 27 June James Angleton telephoned Walt Elder. Dave Aaron of the SSC staff

had uncovered a staff agent in New York who had been an Agency mafia penetration which Angleton said

was made on the authorization of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in 1963. The agent had tried to

contact his case officer, had been unable to reach him, and subsequently contacted Angleton.

Angleton had advised John Greaney Office of General Counsel.

Neither of them had thought to notify Chief, CI or Review Staff (Greaney later indicated

he thought the agent had retired.) Elder then called Bill Miller to alert him

on the sensitivity of the issue, and especially to the possibility of mafia retribution against the agent

Miller noted this and said that Pat Shea would be doing the questioning. Pat Shea then called Elder

and pointed out he had talked to the agent and had not learned about his current employment

with CIA until the end of their conversation. Shea placed his contact in the non-abuse category.

Shea said he was summarizing his talk in an Eyes-Only memo for Bill Miller. Shea then planned to talk

further with the agent.

3. I discussed the matter with John Greaney, in summary he told me that the agent, Mario Brod

in February 1963 had come into contact with Herbert Itkin who had

information about links between the Chicago Teamsters Union and the Mafia.

Brod reported this to his case officer, and in a few day the DDP (Helms) discussed the matter

with Robert F. Kennedy because of Kennedy’s requirements for information on Hoffa

and with Sam Papich of the FBI. The FBI was enamored of Itkin’s contacts

Page 3

with labor and the mafia. Brod was to develop Itkin as an FBI source

and turn him over to them. CIA could not turn over Brod to the FBI

because he was a long time agent (recruited in Italy in 1944 by Jim Angleton)

who had operational involvements for us in Haiti and other places.

In March 1963 Brod turned over Itkin to the FBI but unfortunately kept a string on him.

Itkin was a handling problem, and from time to time would return to Brod for advice and so forth.

Rocca (CI) had prepared a full book on the Itkin/Brod case but they are only mentioned

in psuedo. The book was “brought to the attention of the IG after a 9 June 1975 Time magazine

article named certain mafioso figures in connection with the CIA.

Scott Breckenridge said that he had not seen the black book, or known of the Itkin/Brod case prior to June 1975

4. I request your advice and whether we should alert the DCI, the White House and the SSC.

Jerrold B. Brown

Postscript the mafia figures referenced in the Time Magazine article of 1975 were

Russell Bufalino, James Plumeri, Salvatore Granello alleged to have been spotters prior to the Bay Of Pigs”

Final Thoughts:

In 1967, there were ostensibly three groups which had the ability to fess-up about what they knew regarding the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

They were the FBI, the CIA and mob figures, ranging from Carlos Marcello, Santo Trafficante, Angelo Bruno and Johnny Roselli.....

What is not refutable is the information traced to RFK's office in 1963, which apparently William Harvey and Rosselli were so seemingly concerned about was a definitive lead, and a definitive lead the CIA and FBI would never have bandied about in a public manner in that year of 1967.

A RFK Presidency was definitely a threat to organized crime; was it also a threat to Bill Harvey, James Angleton and Johnny

Rosselli?

If one considers the salient point of this post, it is that Robert Kennedy was about to leap into the Presidential race of 1968, a short time afterwards, where, it has been said "he would utilize the full powers of the Presidency to investigate his brothers death. The information he had in 1963, was still in his possession in 1967, the point should be made regarding means, motive and opportunity.

An excerpt from the Angleton document on

jfklancer. com reads

"On October 4, 1967, Howard Osborne, the Director of the Office of Security noted, “In response to a question from me, William Harvey said that he felt sure “Johnny would never pull the string on us unless he was absolutely desperate, but that his concern was that Senator Robert Kennedy knew all about this operation. He said that the Director had sent him a clipping from a Chicago newspaper touching upon our use of Giancana when William Harvey was still (deleted). He said that he mentioned this to Johnny the next time he saw him and that Johnny said he knew that the information came from a link in Senator Kennedy’s office when he was still Attorney General. [CIA D-000249]"

It should also be mentioned that Sirhan Bashira Sirhan knew a racing acquaintance named Frank Donneroummas alias Henry Ramistella of New Jersey. According to author David E. Sheim, Ramistella was "Sirhan's boss and close associate.

Thanks for that Robert,

Glad to see that post!

When I started out doing JFK Researach I was committed to just the JFK assassination and didn't get bogged down in the details of RFK, MLK, et al., but now I realize that they are all connected, not only in deed but in cover-up.

If the murder of Medgar Evers was properly investigated and solved immediately, JFK would not have been killed and if JFK not killed, RFK and MLK would have been unnecessary or much harder.

These details, aren't just the mob, as there is Angleton and Harvey, hardly street-punks.

Oh, and another thing -

I'm having a Columbo moment here.

Russel Bufalino is not just a Mafia Goon, he is the Capo de Capo of a Mafia family from Northeast Pennsylvania, and like Angelo Bruno, who controlled Philadelphia and South Jersey, they both sat on The Commission, and their names can be found at the tables of the Italian restaurants they frequented while under the survillance of the FBI.

I think, from memory, this is drawing on an article by Larry: Henry Ramistella is the correct name and the other the alias. Further, there are another persons to consider in the horse industry in this matter: A Mr. Owens, who had close connection to the rabid right wing governor. It seems many investigative routes were dropped.

Robert,

I was concerned that we may have lost your participation here, great to see you!

I posted in reaction to your topic, over on the Waldron thread.

Do you have any information on Sylvia Pagano, the mother of Charles O'brien? She is said to have been close to Moe Dalitz and other mob principals and introduced Hoffa to them?

DETROIT -- In a break in one of the nation's biggest unsolved cases, a hair from Jimmy Hoffa was found in a car that a longtime friend was driving the day the former Teamsters boss vanished 26 years ago, The Detroit News reported yesterday.

FBI scientists matched DNA from hair taken from Hoffa's brush with that of a strand found in the borrowed car that Charles "Chuckie" O'Brien had been using on July 30, 1975, the newspaper reported, citing two unidentified sources...

It is truly safe (I believe) to assume that the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK were related to some degree. William Pepper's investigation of the murder of MLK also has links (to some slight degree) of the MLK ---> JFK assassinations. There is no doubt in my mind that all 3 were related and definitely involved at some point, some of the same players in some way or another. They were not murdered in 'typical' homicides, but in such a way that very powerful people necessarily had to have been involved.

I have no difficulty believing that either, B.K. , and, therefore, there is a unifying factor. I'd even chuck in Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, Cassius X's experiences and many unnamed ones.

W.K. Harvey, C.I.A. Aide, 60; Linked to Anti-Castro Plotting

June 14, 1976, Monday

William K. Harvey, reportedly the head of a special Central Intelligence Agency

group set up in the 1960's to plan the removal of foreign leaders by means

including assassination, died of a heart attack last Wednesday in an Indianapolis

hospital.

Mr. Harvey who was 60 years old, was said to have been in charge of the agency’s

efforts against Prime Minister Fidel Castro of Cuba. He was among 10 agents

whose identities were disclosed by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence

after an investigation in 1975 of alleged assassination plots by the United States.

William E. Colby, then Director of Central Intelligence, had argued that disclosures

of the names of agents would put them in jeopardy of retaliation by “irrational groups.”

Mr. Harvey testified before the Senate Committee that he had been told by superiors

that the Castro assassination plot had been approved at the highest levels of the

government, and that he discussed the efforts with his immediate supervisor,

Richard Helms who later became director of the agency.

Mr. Harvey moved to Indianapolis in 1969 after retiring from the agency, where he had

worked for 22 years. He worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1940 to

1947. At the time of his death, Mr. Harvey was law editor for Bobbs-Merrill Publishing

Company. He was buried Saturday at South Cemetery in Danville, just west of Indiana-

polis. He is survived by his wife, Clara, a daughter, Sally, and a son, James D. Harvey.

If one is a little out of the loop on this thread read, if you can, the document below.....You will be doing yourself a favor.....

And, as i said earlier, I am not a mafia did it, kind of guy......

But Peter Dale Scott has mentioned, that the HSCA's mob did it, Blakey/Cornwell crew, left out mention of Teamster links to organized Crime.....

I apologize for the "thrown together" format of the following but, the information contained will probably make up for it......

1. Upon assuming office in 1961, Attorney General Robert Kennedy launched a major assault on organized crime. Exploiting the limited authority of federal antiracketeering laws, the attorney general sought to convict prominent crime bosses (Angelo Bruno, Louis Gallo, Stefano Magadinno, Joseph Aiuppa, Sam Giancana, and Carlos Marcello) and the corrupt president of the Teamsters' Union (James Hoffa). For the most part, Kennedy's ambitious objectives failed—Hoffa's conviction, for example, was for jury tampering, while Louis Gallo and his father were convicted for making false statements in a Veterans Administration application and Joseph Aiuppa for violating the Migratory Bird Act (he possessed more than the legal limit of mourning doves). The attorney general had also created a special organized crime task force in the Justice Department to coordinate this intensified anticrime initiative and unhesitatingly approved FBI requests to wiretap suspected crime bosses. Approving FBI wiretap requests, however, could not promote law enforcement and, thus, in 1961 and 1962, Attorney General Kennedy lobbied Congress to legalize wiretapping. Kennedy's efforts to repeal the Communications Act's ban on wiretaps were unsuccessful.

2. Bayo Pawley

As I recall Racoosin’s contacts in the administration were wary of Bayo and his story, thinking it could have been some scheme to sucker in a U.S. intelligence agent in order to be captured and the event publicized. They also felt that he may have been making the story up, to simply obtain arms. Racoosin said his contacts just werent convinced. I also received a call to go to Palm Beach to meet with a man who was very close to Kennedy. I don’t recall his name. He was very interested in Bayo’s story, and enthusiastic about getting the Russians out. He also checked with Washington and then had second thoughts. Meanwhile, Racoosin called me and said he had been contacted by someone in the White House, who had authorized him to organize meetings with Cuban exile leaders in order to obtain information on the CIA’s Cuban operations: that Kennedy was distrustful of the CIA because he felt he was recieving bad information.”

Davis stated that he was a personal friend of the head of Radio Free Europe who was working on the Bayo Project.

Subsequently, Davis contacted several Cuban exile leaders and other interested parties who met with Racoosin in the conference room adjoining the office of Miami News editor Bill Baggs. “The meeting was attended by myself, Bill Baggs and Racoosin” Jerry Hemming recalls, “as well as all the action people, Tony Questa, Mario Fontela, Larry LaBorde, Ramon Font, Eddie Bayo and the boys from the DRE. They were giving the scoop on all the CIA screw-ups.” Questa and Font were leaders of the independent Cuban exile group “Commandos-L.” Mario Fontela was the head of the FORDC an exile anti-Castro labor movement. Larry LaBorde, an American was the captain of the Tejano III, the DRE was the anti-Castro student organization. Ironically the FORDC and the DRE were being funded by the CIA, although both organizations resented the CIA’s restrictions on their operational activities. Also at the meeting was John Martino, a shadowy Mafia figure, who had been released from a Castro prison, along with the Bay of Pigs veterans, only three months before.

“Another meeting was held in the conference room of Jack Gore, editor of the Fort Lauderdale News.” Hemming continued “ This meeting was attended by Gore, Congressman Kramer, John Martino, Frank Fiorini, Jerry Buchanan, Mrs. John Perry, Howard Davis, Racoosin, myself and the Cubans.”

Frank Fiorini, later known as Frank Sturgis, later gained notoriety as one of the Watergate Five. Fiorini had a long history of involvement with Cuban exile activities dating back from the time that he joined Castro in the mountains in 1958. 3. During the period of May 7-10th, 1963, Lt George Butler, of the Dallas Police Department, according to ELSUR was at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, a fact which can be proven as a result of ELSUR usage by the FBI in that period.

First, in a conversation between Jerry Gordon and Morris Lansburgh. In this conversation, Gordon is referring to hotel bookings for the day's of May 7, 8, 9, and 10, 1963. At one point in the conversation, Gordon states, "10th down, thirty-five, seven, zero, two [pause] yes sir! [Pause] Some of your friends from Texas"..........

On May 12 1963, [Jerry] Gordon is having a discussion with Sam Belkin, a casino credit manager concerning customers at the casino who owe the casino money......Gordon is reading off the names to Belkin, and Belkin is cross-referencing them against a list he has, after running down the 36th name, Sam Gordon.....five. the following,"...........BUTLER......Paid..."

So, the conversation implies, at least by what Gordon states to Lansburgh, that a Dallas police Lieutenant is on familiar terms with Morris Lansburgh. If that were the case it belies the fact that with the assassination seven months away, there is good reason to suspect the charge made through the years that there were some bad apples on the Dallas police force was not inaccurate; In that context, a Dallas detective staying at the Flamingo in Vegas.......

4. Two Individuals named Donald Green or just one?

After discussing other topics Litchfield is asked....

Mr. Hubert.

Was that statement you made that you had seen Oswald around somewhere, was it made before Oswald was shot?

Mr. Litchfield.

Yes.

Mr. Hubert.

Did you repeat it thereafter?

Mr. Litchfield.

I did to a friend of mine who is on the vice squad here in Dallas.

Mr. Hubert.

And what is his name?

Mr. Litchfield.

Donald Green.

Mr. Hubert.

When did you tell him?

Mr. Litchfield.

Well, it was the day preceding the day that I went down--I think I went down on a Monday to the police station to talk to the FBI agents and everybody, so I must have talked to Don on the Sunday night preceding that or on Saturday. I called him on the phone and I told him, "I think I have seen that man with Jack up at the Carousel." I said, "I don't know, but I'm pretty darn sure I have." And he made some calls and called me back and said the police department right now wants to talk to me, and he met me I believe it was Monday, I'm pretty sure it was a Monday, he met me Monday morning about 9:15 or 9:30 at the coffee shop of the Statler and we walked on up to the police station.

Mr. Hubert.

And you made a statement of that?

One of the occupants of the boarding house was named Donald Green

6. On November 30 1963, [Redacted] advised SA Robert J. Tompkins, Jr. that during December of 1960 he was investigating the activities of BEN JAFFE. Jaffe is presently the subject of an Anti-Racketeering case under the Criminal Intelligence Program in Chicago. Jaffe resides in Las Vegas and owns the Tropicana Hotel. During this investigation [Redacted] had a conversation with Rev. BILL BEENY of St. Louis, Missouri concerning BEN JAFFE while in Del Rio, Texas in December, 1960. He advised that he read in the Chicago "Tribune" newspaper dated November 27, 1963 that the same Rev. BEENY of St. Louis, Missouri, reportedly a candidate for governor of Missouri, had offered a home and job to Mrs. Lee Oswald.

He advised that he coversed with Bill Beeny regarding JAFFE inasmuch as leasing radio time on station XERF which is located in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico directly across the river from Del Rio, Texas and is allegedly owned by BEN JAFFE.

7. In 1963 Dave Morales was also meeting with the former principals of the ZR/RIFLE plots, William Harvey and John Rosselli, for purposes which are unexplained, and were possibly unauthorized.[185] Rosselli, an associate of Richard Cain from Chicago, had been the principal mob participant in the ZR/RIFLE project to assassinate Castro.[186] But by 1963 Harvey, after infuriating both Robert Kennedy and CIA Director McCone, had been taken off anti-Castro operations and reassigned as CIA Station Chief in Rome. The FBI had Rosselli under close observation in 1963; and allegedly overheard him and Harvey indulge themselves "by saying nasty things about Bobby Kennedy."[187]

Another significant revelation is the presence in William Harvey's ZR/RIFLE files of Harold Meltzer, who in the 1940s helped build up the Mafia's Mexico City drug connection.[188] According to Richard Mahoney,

In 1975, the Church Committee catalogued Harvey's ZR/RIFLE files and found the dossier of one Harold Meltzer, whom Harvey had described as "a resident of Los Angeles with a long criminal record." What the ZR/RIFLE memo did not say was that Meltzer was a longtime collaborator and sometime shooter for Rosselli. Who, if not Rosselli, would have introduced him and vouched for him to Harvey? It was yet another indication that the alliance between Harvey and Rosselli went far deeper than the one-shot joint venture to kill Castro. What sealed their relationship was a venomous hatred of the Kennedys, and their collaboration in the sensitive art of murder.[189]

And what Mahoney does not mention is that both FBN and FBI files linked the Mexican drug connection to Jack Ruby. Ruby's contacts with Mexican drugs are first reported in 1948, but seem to have been reactivated in 1963. At least one old collaborator of Meltzer in the Mexican drug traffic, Paul Roland Jones, contacted Ruby in Dallas just before the assassination.[190]

It is clear that throughout 1963, members like David Morales of the CIA’s Special Affairs Staff, designated to co-ordinate operations against Castro (including new assassination projects), maintained contact with Cuban and other enemies of the Kennedys. What has become clear only recently is that David Phillips, when he acquired his second role in the fall of 1963 as Chief of Cuban Operations in Mexico City, now answered in this capacity to the Special Affairs Staff.[191] Phillips was in effect rejoining the officers he had worked with on the Bay of Pigs in 1961, at which time he had been responsible for propaganda operations against the newly-created Fair Play for Cuba Committee.[192]

From about October 1 to October 9 Phillips made a quick trip, authorized by the Special Affairs Staff, to Washington and then Miami.[193] On October 1 the Mexico City CIA station also sent a cable directing that a diplomatic pouch, sent on October 1 to Washington, should be held in the registry until picked up by “Michael C. Choaden” (i.e. Phillips) presently TDY (temporary duty) HQS.”[194][195] The date October 1 catches our eye, inasmuch as it is the date of the alleged Oswald-Kostikov intercept. One is also struck by Phillips’ presence in the Miami JMWAVE station from October 7-9. There are reports that Rosselli, who had good standing in the JMWAVE station, met on two occasions in Miami in early October with Jack Ruby.[196]

Phillips’ trip coincides curiously with a significant change in the contents and handling of Oswald’s 201 file. Up to late September 1963, incoming documents about Oswald had been referred to the CI/OPS and SR/CI (Soviet Russia/Counterintelligence) desks.[197] But there was a new addressee for the next Oswald document, an FBI Report of September 24 from New Orleans about Oswald’s arrest in August 9 after distributing Fair Play for Cuba leaflets. This was “Austin Horn” of SAS/CI (replacing the usual SR/CI), whose name appears next to the date stamp “8 Oct 1963.” This exclusion of SR/CI, coupled with the initial exclusion of the report (entitled “Lee Harvey Oswald”) from Oswald’s 201 file, helps explain how an unwitting member of the SR/CI staff (Stefan Roll) could clear an outgoing cable that stated, falsely, that

“Latest HDQS info [on Oswald] was ODACID [state Department] report dated May 1962 [!] saying ODACID had determined Oswald is still US citizen and both he and his Soviet wife have exit permits and Dept State had given approval for their travel with their infant child to USA.[198]

Of the six officers responsible for drafting and signing this important cable, only one, Jane Roman of CI/LS (Counterintelligence/Liaison), had seen the incoming FBI report of September 24 that disproved their text. In Chapter III### we shall investigate the probability that this dishonest cable was part of a CIA/CI operation.

Who was this “Austin Horn” who was privileged to see documents on Oswald denied to those who were drafting cables about him? We shall postpone to a later chapter the possibility, as yet still uncertain, that “Austin Horn” may in fact be David Phillips.

Whether he is or not, David Phillips is the one man who seems to cover all aspects of the CIA-Oswald operation and cover-up in 1963. David Phillips even had one friend, Gordon McLendon, in common with Jack Ruby. McLendon, a sometime intelligence officer and Dallas owner of radio stations, had known Phillips since both men were in their teens. (The two men would in the the 1970s join in forming the Association of Retired Intelligence Officers.) McLendon was close to two other wealthy men in Dallas who have attracted the attention of JFK researchers, Clint Murchison and Bedford Wynne.[199]

What has not yet been explained is why McLendon, whom Ruby described as one of his six closest friends, embarked on a sudden and surprising trip with his family to Mexico City in the fall of 1963.

The above is from Peter Dale Scott's article at History Matters

One of the pitfalls of living on the edge, is the issue of alcohol. That abuse of alcohol has led to very bad things, ever since Cain slew Abel, if you are not an athiest, agnostic or what have you, that is, is indisputable.

There might never have been an Inspector General's Report of 1967, had excessive imbibing not taken place in Las Vegas between attorney Edward P. Morgan and Johnny Roselli, at least that was more or less, the conclusion reached by the CIA as they attempted to determine the "source" of Jack Anderson's very controversial article which speculated that an assassination attempt on Fidel Castro had backfired an led to the assassination of President Kennedy instead.

See page 131 UNSANITIZED I.G. REPORT

http://www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/...p;relPageId=131

One does not have to be a rocket scientist, to realize that Anderson's column was in some respects, a continuation of 1963 allegations by members of the DRE, John Martino and a slew of other individuals......Even in 2010, the KGB and Castro did it

allegations are very much alive and well, just ask Tom Hanks....lol

And not unlike practically every major aspect of the historical chronology of the post-JFK assassination, determining truth to an absolute certainty, is as difficult as one might imagine.....

Example: Was Jack Anderson, aware that he might be in the process of being "fed" a psuedo-disinformation story for the ages?

Well, as to the following, I will cite something of a speculative factoid, which illuminates my own question.

Frank Sturgis, at one point stated that Jack Anderson was paraphrasing "friendly" with the Diaz brothers.

Point being, that in 1967, as in 1963, there might have been a collective "cover your backside" issue with regards to practically

everyone involved in the Jack Anderson saga.

It is also ironic that, as far as I know, Richard Nixon never obtained access to the Inspector General's report, at least not while he was in office. Might that scenario between the CIA and Nixon been a little tit for tat?

Remember the phrase "Never let em see you sweat?"

To paraphrase Richard Case Nagell, "End of lead? ... Not hardly. End of post? Yes...."
