Did this plan to finally deal with castro somehow metamorphasize into the plot to assassinate JFK. The  basic elements seem much too similar for this to be coincidental. Both were false flag operations toward cuba and castro, who would finally be dealt with once and for all Also, did some of the same people lend their talents and experience to both projects 

In the end it didn't really matter how it was done as long as it was done. Castro's death was the main objective, kennedy's was a bonus.

also the the irony of jfk being killed by a plan he had rejected would be lost on no one.

The desired result from the execution of this plan would be to place the United States in the apparent position of suffering defensible grievances from a rash and irresponsible government of Cuba and to develop an international image of a Cuban threat to peace in the Western Hemisphere.

Martin, good questions.

Both the Northwoods planners and the JFK assassination planners were looking to use the violent event as a trigger. The Northwoods attack would have used widespread media coverage to sell the chosen story, and the JFK assassination did just that.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff were instrumental in planning Northwoods. They clearly are figures of interest in Kennedy's assassination.

Both William Harvey and Angleton had connections to the Italian right, Harvey through being moved over there, Angleton through various connections. The Northwoods planning was precipitated by Italian figures coming to the US and giving a talk regarding how a coup might work in Europe. The Northwoods document date to a few months after that talk.

Much more to add but I'm about to start work. An interesting subject for sure.

Just for context I do have to say that such contingency planning is a standard at the level of the Pentagon and at regional command levels.  Its the sort of thing staff officers are requested to do on a regular basis...for all sorts of adversaries and contingencies.  Its also pretty standard to come up with "provocation" options for situations where conventional military actions are part of the strategic planning. Not to get in the way of the conspiracy discussion but it certainly was not unique to Mongoose or for that matter for Cuba....and certainly not unique to worldwide militaries.  Hitler used is quite successfully in Europe and Russia has done so in Ukraine and may well be preparing to do so again.  Of course the thing is that it never fools anyone, but then its not really expected to, if it actually goes to the point of operational planning it is simply intended to serve as cover for the initial stage of combat.
